“Façam uma contagem de todos os israelitas desde Berseba até Dã e tragam um relatório para mim”, disse Davi a Joabe e aos outros comandantes do exército.

Mas Joabe respondeu: “Que o Senhor multiplique o número desse povo por cem. Ó rei, meu senhor, toda essa gente não seria composta de servos do meu senhor? Então por que nos pede para fazer isto? Por que o rei quer trazer culpa sobre Israel?”
Y dijo Joab: Añada Jehová á su pueblo cien veces otros tantos. Rey señor mío, ¿no son todos estos siervos de mi señor? ¿para qué procura mi señor esto, que será pernicioso á Israel?
And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
Joab said, “May the LORD make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
Porém a ordem do rei acabou prevalecendo, e Joabe teve de fazer conforme o rei havia mandado. Joabe percorreu todo o Israel e então voltou para Jerusalém.
Mas el mandamiento del rey pudo más que Joab. Salió por tanto Joab, y fué por todo Israel; y volvió á Jerusalem, y dió la cuenta del número del pueblo á David.

E Deus também desaprovou e castigou Israel por isso.

Então Davi disse a Deus: “Pequei gravemente quando mandei contar o povo. Por favor, eu imploro, perdoe-me, pois agora reconheço que cometi uma grande loucura!”
Y dijo David á Dios: He pecado gravemente en hacer esto: ruégote que hagas pasar la iniquidad de tu siervo, porque yo he hecho muy locamente.
And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Então o Senhor disse a Gade, o profeta pessoal de Davi.

Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

Gade foi a Davi e disse a ele: “Assim diz o Senhor: Faça a sua escolha:

So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee
So Gad came to David and said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Take your choice:
três anos de fome, ou três meses fugindo dos seus inimigos, perseguido pela espada deles, ou três dias de espada do Senhor, isto é, três dias de peste que vai matar muita gente em todas as regiões de Israel por meio do anjo do Senhor. Decida como devo responder àquele que me enviou”.
Escógete, ó tres años de hambre; ó ser por tres meses deshecho delante de tus enemigos, y que la espada de tus adversarios te alcance; ó por tres días la espada de Jehová y pestilencia en la tierra, y que el ángel de Jehová destruya en todo el término de Israel: mira pues qué he de responder al que me ha enviado.
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

Então Davi respondeu: “Estou angustiado! É melhor que eu seja castigado pelas mãos do Senhor do que cair nas mãos dos homens, porque a misericórdia do Senhor é grande”.
Entonces David dijo á Gad: Estoy en grande angustia: ruego que yo caiga en la mano de Jehová; porque sus misericordias son muchas en extremo, y que no caiga yo en manos de hombres.
And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into the LORD’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”
Então o Senhor mandou uma peste sobre Israel e setenta mil homens de Israel morreram.
Así Jehová dió pestilencia en Israel, y cayeron de Israel setenta mil hombres.

E Deus enviou um anjo para destruir Jerusalém, mas mudou de ideia ao causar tanta desgraça e disse ao anjo destruidor: “Pare! Já chega!” O anjo do Senhor estava perto do terreiro de debulhar trigo de Araúna, o jebuseu.

Quando Davi olhou para cima e viu o anjo do Senhor, que estava entre a terra e o céu, com a espada na mão, pronta para destruir Jerusalém, Davi e as autoridades se vestiram com roupas de pano de saco e se ajoelharam no chão, prostrados diante do Senhor.

Davi disse a Deus: “Fui eu que pequei e agi muito mal quando mandei contar o povo. Mas estas ovelhas, o que elas fizeram? Ó Senhor, meu Deus, que o seu castigo caia sobre mim e a minha família, mas não sobre o seu povo”.
Y alzando David sus ojos, vió al ángel de Jehová, que estaba entre el cielo y la tierra, teniendo un espada desnuda en su mano, extendida contra Jerusalem. Entonces David y los ancianos se postraron sobre sus rostros, cubiertos de sacos.
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
Então o Anjo do Senhor disse a Gade que falasse com Davi para construir um altar no terreiro de debulhar trigo de Araúna, o jebuseu.
Y dijo David á Dios: ¿No soy yo el que hizo contar el pueblo? Yo mismo soy el que pequé, y ciertamente he hecho mal; mas estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Jehová Dios mío, sea ahora tu mano contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre, y no haya plaga en tu pueblo.
Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Then the LORD’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Assim Davi foi falar com Araúna, em obediência à palavra que Gade havia anunciado em nome do Senhor.

Araúna estava debulhando trigo. Quando ele se virou e viu o anjo, ele e seus quatro filhos fugiram e se esconderam.

Quando Araúna viu que o rei estava chegando, saiu do terreiro de debulhar trigo e se inclinou com o rosto no chão diante do rei Davi.

E Davi disse a Araúna: “Vim comprar este terreno e desejo pagar um preço justo. Quero construir nele um altar para o Senhor, para que a peste acabe sobre o povo”.
Y viniendo David á Ornán, miró éste, y vió á David: y saliendo de la era, postróse en tierra á David.
Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the LORD on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
“Fique com o terreno, meu senhor, e use-o como quiser”, disse Araúna a Davi. “Eu também darei os bois para ofertas queimadas; use para fazer fogo esses pedaços de madeira com os quais debulho o trigo, e use o trigo como oferta de cereais. Dou tudo isso ao rei”.
Entonces dijo David á Ornán: Dame este lugar de la era, en que edifique un altar á Jehová, y dámelo por su cabal precio, para que cese la plaga del pueblo.
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
“Não”, respondeu o rei. “Quero comprálo por um preço justo. Não posso aceitar o que pertence a você e dar ao Senhor. Não vou oferecer uma oferta que não me custe nada!”
Y Ornán respondió á David: Tómalo para ti, y haga mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere: y aun los bueyes daré para el holocausto, y los trillos para leña, y trigo para el presente: yo lo doy todo.
And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for the LORD, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
Assim Davi pagou a Araúna sete quilos e duzentos gramas de ouro pelo terreno.

E Davi construiu um altar ao Senhor naquele lugar e sacrificou ofertas queimadas e ofertas de paz sobre o altar. Ele fez uma oração ao Senhor, que respondeu com fogo do céu para queimar a oferta no altar.

Depois o Senhor ordenou que o anjo guardasse a espada na bainha.
Y edificó allí David un altar á Jehová, en el que ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios pacíficos, é invocó á Jehová, el cual le respondió por fuego de los cielos en el altar del holocausto.
And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

Quando Davi viu que o Senhor respondeu à sua oração no terreiro de Araúna, ofereceu sacrifícios ao Senhor.
