A lo que respondió Joab: Aumente el Señor su pueblo cien veces más de lo que es. Pero, ¿no es así, oh mi rey y señor, que todos son siervos tuyos? ¿A qué fin pretende mi señor hacer una cosa, que será perniciosa y acarreará el castigo a Israel?
Y dijo Joab: Añada Jehová á su pueblo cien veces otros tantos. Rey señor mío, ¿no son todos estos siervos de mi señor? ¿para qué procura mi señor esto, que será pernicioso á Israel?
And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
Joab said, “May the LORD make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
Sin embargo, prevaleció el parecer o antojo del rey; y Joab hubo de salir, y anduvo girando por todo Israel, y volvió después a Jerusalén ,
Mas el mandamiento del rey pudo más que Joab. Salió por tanto Joab, y fué por todo Israel; y volvió á Jerusalem, y dió la cuenta del número del pueblo á David.

si bien Joab no hizo el censo de las tribus de Leví y de Benjamín; por cuanto ejecutaba de mala gana la orden del rey.

Habló después el Señor a Gad, profeta de David, diciendo:

Anda, ve a David, y dile: Esto dice el Señor: Tres cosas te doy a escoger; escoge una, la que quisieres recibir de mí.

Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

Viniendo, pues, Gad a David, le dijo: Esto dice el Señor: Escoge lo que quieras,

o hambre por tres años; o andar huyendo de tus enemigos por tres meses, sin poder librarte de su espada; o que por tres días descargue sus golpes la espada del Señor, cundiendo la peste por el país, y haciendo estragos el ángel del Señor en todos los términos de Israel. Ahora bien, mira tú qué es lo que he de responder al que me ha enviado.
Escógete, ó tres años de hambre; ó ser por tres meses deshecho delante de tus enemigos, y que la espada de tus adversarios te alcance; ó por tres días la espada de Jehová y pestilencia en la tierra, y que el ángel de Jehová destruya en todo el término de Israel: mira pues qué he de responder al que me ha enviado.
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

Respondió David a Gad: Por todas partes me hallo lleno de angustias; pero al fin, más cuenta me tiene el caer en manos del Señor, conociendo su gran misericordia, que no en manos de los hombres.
Entonces David dijo á Gad: Estoy en grande angustia: ruego que yo caiga en la mano de Jehová; porque sus misericordias son muchas en extremo, y que no caiga yo en manos de hombres.
And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into the LORD’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”
Envió, pues, el Señor la peste a Israel; y murieron de Israel setenta mil hombres.
Así Jehová dió pestilencia en Israel, y cayeron de Israel setenta mil hombres.

Estaba a la sazón el ángel del Señor sobre la era de Ornán, jebuseo.
Y envió Jehová el ángel á Jerusalem para destruirla: pero estando él destruyendo, miró Jehová, y arrepintióse de aquel mal,
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, the LORD saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” the LORD’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Y alzando David los ojos vio al ángel del Señor, que estaba en el aire, con una espada desenvainada en su mano, vuelta contra Jerusalén ; y a su vista, tanto él como los ancianos, vestidos de cilicios, se postraron rostro por tierra.
Y dijo al ángel que destruía: Basta ya; detén tu mano. Y el ángel de Jehová estaba junto á la era de Ornán Jebuseo.

Y dijo David a Dios: ¿Por ventura no soy yo quien mandó hacer el censo del pueblo? Yo soy el que he pecado; yo el que he cometido la maldad. Esta grey, ¿qué culpa tiene? Señor Dios mío, descarga, te suplico, tu mano contra mí y contra la casa de mi padre; mas no sea castigado tu pueblo.
Y alzando David sus ojos, vió al ángel de Jehová, que estaba entre el cielo y la tierra, teniendo un espada desnuda en su mano, extendida contra Jerusalem. Entonces David y los ancianos se postraron sobre sus rostros, cubiertos de sacos.
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
Y al punto el ángel del Señor mandó a Gad que dijese a David, que subiese a erigir un altar al Señor Dios en la era de Ornán, jebuseo.
Y dijo David á Dios: ¿No soy yo el que hizo contar el pueblo? Yo mismo soy el que pequé, y ciertamente he hecho mal; mas estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Jehová Dios mío, sea ahora tu mano contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre, y no haya plaga en tu pueblo.
Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Then the LORD’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Subió, pues, David, según el mandato que le había dado Gad en nombre del Señor.
Y el ángel de Jehová ordenó á Gad que dijese á David, que subiese y construyese un altar á Jehová en la era de Ornán Jebuseo.
And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

Entretanto Ornán y cuatro hijos suyos, que con él estaban, habiendo alzado los ojos y visto al ángel, fueron a esconderse; estaban a la sazón trillando el trigo en la era.

Pues como David viniese hacia Ornán, lo alcanzó a ver éste desde la era, y le salió al encuentro, e inclinándose hasta el suelo, le hizo una profunda reverencia.
Y volviéndose Ornán vió al ángel; por lo que se escondieron cuatro hijos suyos que con él estaban. Y Ornán trillaba el trigo.

Le dijo David: Dame el sitio de tu era, recibiendo su valor en dinero contante, para edificar en ella un altar al Señor, a fin de que cese el azote del pueblo.
Y viniendo David á Ornán, miró éste, y vió á David: y saliendo de la era, postróse en tierra á David.
Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to the LORD on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
Respondió Ornán a David: Tómela, y haga de ella el rey, mi señor, lo que bien le pareciere. Y aun doy los bueyes para el holocausto, y los trillos para hacer el fuego, y el trigo para el sacrificio. Todo lo daré con gusto.
Entonces dijo David á Ornán: Dame este lugar de la era, en que edifique un altar á Jehová, y dámelo por su cabal precio, para que cese la plaga del pueblo.
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
Le replicó el rey David: No ha de ser así, sino que te pagaré en dinero todo su valor; porque no debo yo quitártelo a ti, y ofrecer así al Señor holocaustos que no me cuesten nada.
Y Ornán respondió á David: Tómalo para ti, y haga mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere: y aun los bueyes daré para el holocausto, y los trillos para leña, y trigo para el presente: yo lo doy todo.
And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for the LORD, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
Dio, pues, David a Ornán, en pago del sitio, seiscientos siclos de oro.
Entonces el rey David dijo á Ornán: No, sino que efectivamente la compraré por su justo precio: porque no tomaré para Jehová lo que es tuyo, ni sacrificaré holocausto que nada me cueste.

Con eso edificó allí un altar al Señor, y ofreció holocaustos y víctimas pacíficas, invocando al Señor; el cual le oyó, enviando fuego del cielo sobre el altar de holocausto.

Y dando el Señor orden al ángel, envainó éste su espada.
Y edificó allí David un altar á Jehová, en el que ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios pacíficos, é invocó á Jehová, el cual le respondió por fuego de los cielos en el altar del holocausto.

Inmediatamente David viendo que el Señor había oído su oración en la era de Ornán, jebuseo, ofreció allí sacrificios.

Verdad es que a la sazón el Tabernáculo del Señor, construido por Moisés en el desierto, y el altar de los holocaustos estaban en la altura de Gabaón.
Entonces viendo David que Jehová le había oído en la era de Ornán Jebuseo, sacrificó allí.

Mas David no tuvo aliento para ir entonces a aquel altar a orar allí a Dios, porque había quedado muy aterrado de espanto, al ver la espada del ángel del Señor.
Y el tabernáculo de Jehová que Moisés había hecho en el desierto, y el altar del holocausto, estaban entonces en el alto de Gabaón: Mas David no pudo ir allá á consultar á Dios, porque estaba espantado á causa de la espada del ángel de Jehová.
