De même, si les choses inanimées qui rendent leur son, soit un hautbois, soit une harpe, ne forment des tons différents, comment connaîtra-t-on ce qui est sonné sur le hautbois, ou sur la harpe ?

Ciertamente las cosas inanimadas que hacen sonidos, como la flauta ó la vihuela, si no dieren distinción de voces, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se tañe con la flauta, ó con la vihuela?

And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?

Even lifeless things that make a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?
