Al paso que el que hace oficio de profeta, habla con los hombres para edificación de ellos, y para exhortarlos y consolarlos.

Yo, sí, deseo que todos vosotros tengáis el don de lenguas; pero mucho más que tengáis el de profecía. Porque aquel que profetiza es preferible al que habla lenguas desconocidas; a no ser que también las interprete o profetice, a fin de que la Iglesia reciba utilidad.
Así que, quisiera que todos vosotros hablaseis lenguas, empero más que profetizaseis: porque mayor es el que profetiza que el que habla lenguas, si también no interpretare, para que la iglesia tome edificación.
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but even more that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.
En efecto, hermanos, si yo fuere a vosotros hablando lenguas, ¿qué os aprovecharé, si no os hablo instruyéndoos o con la revelación, o con la ciencia, o con la profecía, o con la doctrina?

Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?
¿No vemos aun en las cosas inanimadas que producen sonidos, como la flauta y el arpa, que si no forman tonos diferentes, no se puede saber lo que se toca con la flauta o con el arpa?
Ciertamente las cosas inanimadas que hacen sonidos, como la flauta ó la vihuela, si no dieren distinción de voces, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se tañe con la flauta, ó con la vihuela?
And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
Even lifeless things that make a sound, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?
Y si la trompeta no da un sonido determinado sino confuso, ¿quién es el que se preparará para el combate?
Y si la trompeta diere sonido incierto, ¿quién se apercibirá á la batalla?
For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war?
Si la lengua que habláis no es inteligible, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que decís? No hablaréis sino al aire.
Así también vosotros, si por la lengua no diereis palabra bien significante, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que se dice? porque hablaréis al aire.
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air.
En efecto, hay en el mundo muchas diferentes lenguas, y no hay pueblo que no tenga la suya.
Tantos géneros de voces, por ejemplo, hay en el mundo, y nada hay mudo;
There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without meaning.
Si yo, pues, ignoro lo que significan las palabras, seré bárbaro, o extranjero para aquel a quien hablo; y el que me hable, será bárbaro para mí.
Mas si yo ignorare el valor de la voz, seré bárbaro al que habla, y el que habla será bárbaro para mí.
Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
If then I don’t know the meaning of the language, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me.
Por eso vosotros, ya que sois codiciosos de estos dones espirituales, desead ser enriquecidos con ellos para edificación de la Iglesia.

Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.
Y por lo mismo, el que habla una lengua, pida la gracia de interpretarla, o explicar lo que dice.
Por lo cual, el que habla lengua extraña, pida que la interprete.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret.
Que si yo hago oración o predico en una lengua desconocida, mi espíritu ora o predica, pero mi concepto queda sin fruto.

For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Pues ¿qué haré? Oraré con el espíritu, y oraré también hablando inteligiblemente; cantaré salmos con el espíritu, pero los cantaré también inteligiblemente.

What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

Por lo demás, si tú alabas a Dios solamente con el espíritu, el que está en la clase del sencillo pueblo, ¿cómo ha de decir: Amén, esto es, Así sea, al fin de tu acción de gracias?, puesto que no entiende lo que tú dices.
Porque si bendijeres con el espíritu, el que ocupa lugar de un mero particular, ¿cómo dirá amén á tu acción de gracias? pues no sabe lo que has dicho.
Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say?
No es que no sea buena tu acción de gracias, sino que no quedan por ella edificados los otros.
Porque tú, á la verdad, bien haces gracias; mas el otro no es edificado.
For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.
Yo doy gracias a mi Dios de que hablo las lenguas de todos vosotros.
Doy gracias á Dios que hablo lenguas más que todos vosotros:
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.
Pero en la Iglesia más bien quiero hablar cinco palabras de modo que sea entendido, e instruya, también a los otros, que diez mil palabras en lengua extraña.
Pero en la iglesia más quiero hablar cinco palabras con mi sentido, para que enseñe también á los otros, que diez mil palabras en lengua desconocida.
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
However, in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.
Hermanos, no seáis como niños en el uso de la razón; sed sí niños en la malicia, pero en la cordura hombres hechos.
Hermanos, no seáis niños en el sentido, sino sed niños en la malicia: empero perfectos en el sentido.
Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.
En la ley está escrito: Yo hablaré en otras lenguas y con otros acentos a este pueblo; y ni aun así me creerán, dice el Señor.

In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.

Así, pues, el don de las lenguas es una señal no para los fieles, sino para los infieles; mas el de las profecías no se ha dado para convertir a los infieles, sino para instruir a los fieles.
Así que, las lenguas por señal son, no á los fieles, sino á los infieles: mas la profecía, no á los infieles, sino á los fieles.
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe.
Ahora bien, si estando congregada toda la Iglesia en un lugar, y poniéndose todos a hablar lenguas diferentes, entran gentes no iniciadas, o bien infieles, ¿no dirán que estáis locos?
De manera que, si toda la iglesia se juntare en uno, y todos hablan lenguas, y entran indoctos ó infieles, ¿no dirán que estáis locos?
If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy?
Mas al contrario, si profetizando todos, entra un infiel o no iniciado, de todos será convencido, será juzgado de todos.
Mas si todos profetizan, y entra algún infiel ó indocto, de todos es convencido, de todos es juzgado;
But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all.
Los secretos de su corazón se harán manifiestos y, por tanto, postrado sobre su rostro, adorará a Dios, confesando que verdaderamente Dios está en medio de vosotros.
Lo oculto de su corazón se hace manifiesto: y así, postrándose sobre el rostro, adorará á Dios, declarando que verdaderamente Dios está en vosotros.
And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.
Pues ¿qué es lo que se ha de hacer, hermanos míos? Vedlo aquí: Si cuando os congregáis, uno de vosotros se halla inspirado de Dios para hacer un himno, otro para instruir, éste para revelar alguna cosa de Dios, aquél para hablar lenguas, otro para interpretarlas, hágase todo para edificación de los fieles.
¿Qué hay pues, hermanos? Cuando os juntáis, cada uno de vosotros tiene salmo, tiene doctrina, tiene lengua, tiene revelación, tiene interpretación: hágase todo para edificación.
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, or has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.
Si han de hablar lenguas hablen dos solamente, o cuando mucho tres, y eso por turno, y haya uno que explique lo que dicen.
Si hablare alguno en lengua extraña, sea esto por dos, ó á lo más tres, y por turno; mas uno interprete.
If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
If any man speaks in another language, let there be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.
Y si no hubiere intérprete, callen en la Iglesia los que tienen este don, y hablen consigo y con Dios.
Y si no hubiere intérprete, calle en la iglesia, y hable á sí mismo y á Dios.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God.
De los profetas hablen dos o tres y los demás disciernan.
Asimismo, los profetas hablen dos ó tres, y los demás juzguen.
Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
Let two or three of the prophets speak, and let the others discern.
Que si a otro de los asistentes, estando sentado, le fuere revelado algo, calle luego el primero.
Y si á otro que estuviere sentado, fuere revelado, calle el primero.
If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent.
Así podéis profetizar todos uno después de otro, a fin de que todos aprendan, y todos se aprovechen,
Porque podéis todos profetizar uno por uno, para que todos aprendan, y todos sean exhortados.
For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted.
pues los espíritus o dones proféticos están sujetos a los profetas.
Y los espíritus de los que profetizaren, sujétense á los profetas;
And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Porque Dios no es autor de desorden, sino de paz; y esto es lo que yo enseño en todas las iglesias de los santos.
Porque Dios no es Dios de disensión, sino de paz; como en todas las iglesias de los santos.
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.
Las mujeres callen en las iglesias, porque no les es permitido hablar allí, sino que deben estar sumisas, como lo dice también la ley.
Vuestras mujeres callen en las congregaciones; porque no les es permitido hablar, sino que estén sujetas, como también la ley dice.
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the law also says,
Que si desean instruirse en algún punto, pregúntenselo cuando estén en casa a sus maridos. Pues es cosa indecente en una mujer el hablar en la iglesia.
Y si quieren aprender alguna cosa, pregunten en casa á sus maridos; porque deshonesta cosa es hablar una mujer en la congregación.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
if they desire to learn anything. “Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a wife to be talking in the assembly.”
¿Por ventura tuvo de vosotros su origen la palabra de Dios?, ¿o ha llegado a vosotros solos?
Qué, ¿ha salido de vosotros la palabra de Dios? ¿ó á vosotros solos ha llegado?
What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
What!? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?
Si alguno de vosotros se tiene por profeta, o por persona espiritual, reconozca que las cosas que os escribo, son preceptos del Señor.
Si alguno á su parecer, es profeta, ó espiritual, reconozca lo que os escribo, porque son mandamientos del Señor.
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
If any man thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.
El que lo desconoce, será desconocido.
Mas el que ignora, ignore.
But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.
En suma, hermanos, codiciad o preferid el don de la profecía, y no estorbéis el de hablar lenguas.
Así que, hermanos, procurad profetizar; y no impidáis el hablar lenguas.
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
