1¡Hagan del amor su objetivo más importante! Pero también hagan su mejor esfuerzo para lograr los dones espirituales, especialmente la capacidad de predicar el mensaje de Dios.
2Los que hablan en lengua no están hablando con las personas, sino con Dios, porque nadie puede entenderles, pues habla misterios en el Espíritu.
3No obstante, las palabras de los que hablan por Dios, edifican a la gente, proporcionan ánimo y consuelo.
4Los que hablan en una lengua se edifican solo a sí mismos, pero los que hablan el mensaje de Dios edifican a toda la iglesia. Desearía que todos ustedes hablaran en lenguas, pero preferiría que pudieran predicar el mensaje de Dios.
5Los que predican a Dios son más importantes que los que hablan en lenguas, a menos que interpreten lo que se ha dicho, a fin de que la iglesia sea edificada.
6Hermanos y hermanas, si yo vengo a ustedes hablando en lenguas, ¿qué beneficio les aportaría si no les traigo una revelación, un conocimiento, o un mensaje profético, o una enseñanza?
7Incluso cuando se trata de objetos sin vida, tal como los instrumentos musicales, como la flauta o el harpa: si no producen notas claras ¿cómo sabremos qué melodía se está tocando?
8Del mismo modo, si la trompeta no emite un sonido claro, ¿quién se alistará para la batalla?
9Lo mismo ocurre con ustedes: a menos que hablen con palabras que sean fáciles de entender, ¿quién podrá saber lo que están diciendo? Lo que dicen se perderá en el viento.
10Sin duda alguna, hay muchos idiomas en este mundo, y cada uno tiene su significado.
11Pero si yo no comprendo el idioma, los que hablan no tienen sentido para mí, ni yo tengo sentido para ellos.
12Lo mismo ocurre con ustedes: si están ansiosos por tener dones espirituales, traten de tener muchos de los que edifican a la iglesia.
13Todo el que habla en una lengua debe orar para que se le dé la capacidad de traducir lo que dice.
14Porque si yo oro en voz alta en una lengua, mi espíritu está orando, ¡pero no aporta nada a mi comprensión!
15Entonces ¿qué debo hacer? Oraré “en el Espíritu”, pero oraré con mi mente también. Cantaré “en el Espíritu”, pero cantaré con mi mente también.
16Pues si ustedes solo oran “en el Espíritu”, ¿Cómo podrán decir “amén” las personas comunes, después de tu oración de agradecimiento, si no entendieron lo que dijiste?
17Puede que hayas hecho una oración de agradecimiento maravillosa, ¡pero no ayudó a los demás!
18Doy gracias a Dios que puedo hablar en lenguas más que todos ustedes.
19Pero en la iglesia, preferiría pronunciar cinco palabras que sean entendidas por los demás, que diez mil palabras en una lengua que nadie entiende.
20Hermanos y hermanas, no piensen como niños. Sean inocentes como niños pequeños en lo que se refiere al mal, pero sean adultos en su comprensión.
21Como registra la Escritura: “‘Hablaré a mi pueblo por medio de otros idiomas y labios de extranjeros, pero incluso así no me escucharán,’ dice el Señor”.
22Hablar en lenguas es una señal, no para los creyentes, sino para los que no creen. Hablar el mensaje profético de Dios es lo contrario: no es para los que no creen, sino para los que creen.
23Si toda la iglesia se reuniera y todos hablaran en lenguas, y llegaran allí ciertas personas que no entienden, o si llegan personas que no creen, ¿no pensarán que todos ustedes están locos?
24Pero si todos hablan el mensaje de Dios, y alguno que no es creyente llega allí, o alguien que no entiende, se convencerá y sentirá el llamado por las palabras de todos.
25Los secretos de su corazón quedarán descubiertos, y caerán de rodillas y adorarán a Dios, afirmando que Dios está entre ustedes.
26Entonces, hermanos y hermanas, ¿qué deben hacer? Cuando se reúnan, que distintas personas canten, o enseñen, o prediquen un mensaje especial, o hablen en lenguas, o den una interpretación. Pero todo debe hacerse para edificar y animar a la iglesia.
27Si alguno quiere hablar en una lengua, que sean solo dos, o máximo tres personas, tomando turnos, y que alguno interprete lo que se dice.
28Si no hay quien interprete, entonces los que hablan en lenguas deben guardar silencio y solo hablar para sí mismos y para Dios.
29Del mismo modo, permitan que hablen dos o tres de las personas que predican el mensaje profético de Dios, y dejen que todos los demás reflexionen sobre lo que se dijo.
30Sin embargo, si alguno de los que están sentados recibe una revelación, entonces quien estaba predicando debe darle la oportunidad de hablar.
31Todos ustedes pueden predicar acerca de Dios, uno a la vez, para que todos puedan aprender y animarse.
32Quienes predican acerca de Dios deben controlar su inspiración profética,
33porque Dios no es un Dios de desorden, sino de paz y calma. Y así es como deben hacerse las cosas en las iglesias del pueblo de Dios.
34“Las mujeres deben permanecer en silencio en las iglesias. No deberían hablar. Deben tener respeto por su situación, como lo dicen las leyes.
35Si ellas quieren aprender, pueden hacerlo en casa, preguntando a sus esposos. No es apropiado que una mujer hable en la iglesia”.
36¿Qué? ¿Acaso la palabra de Dios comenzó con ustedes? ¿Fueron ustedes los únicos que la recibieron?
37Todo el que crea que es profeta, o que tiene algún don espiritual, debe saber que lo que les escribo es un mandato del Señor.
38Aquellos que ignoran esto serán ignorados también.
39Así que, mis hermanos y hermanas, que su objetivo sea predicar acerca de Dios. No prohíban el hablar en lenguas.
40Solo asegúrense de que todo sea hecho en orden y de manera apropiada.

1SEGUID la caridad; y procurad los dones espirituales, mas sobre todo que profeticéis.
2Porque el que habla en lenguas, no habla á los hombres, sino á Dios; porque nadie le entiende, aunque en espíritu hable misterios.
3Mas el que profetiza, habla á los hombres para edificación, y exhortación, y consolación.
4El que habla lengua extraña, á sí mismo se edifica; mas el que profetiza, edifica á la iglesia.
5Así que, quisiera que todos vosotros hablaseis lenguas, empero más que profetizaseis: porque mayor es el que profetiza que el que habla lenguas, si también no interpretare, para que la iglesia tome edificación.
6Ahora pues, hermanos, si yo fuere á vosotros hablando lenguas, ¿qué os aprovecharé, si no os hablare, ó con revelación, ó con ciencia, ó con profecía, ó con doctrina?
7Ciertamente las cosas inanimadas que hacen sonidos, como la flauta ó la vihuela, si no dieren distinción de voces, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se tañe con la flauta, ó con la vihuela?
8Y si la trompeta diere sonido incierto, ¿quién se apercibirá á la batalla?
9Así también vosotros, si por la lengua no diereis palabra bien significante, ¿cómo se entenderá lo que se dice? porque hablaréis al aire.
10Tantos géneros de voces, por ejemplo, hay en el mundo, y nada hay mudo;
11Mas si yo ignorare el valor de la voz, seré bárbaro al que habla, y el que habla será bárbaro para mí.
12Así también vosotros; pues que anheláis espirituales dones, procurad ser excelentes para la edificación de la iglesia.
13Por lo cual, el que habla lengua extraña, pida que la interprete.
14Porque si yo orare en lengua desconocida, mi espíritu ora; mas mi entendimiento es sin fruto.
15¿Qué pues? Oraré con el espíritu, mas oraré también con entendimiento; cantaré con el espíritu, mas cantaré también con entendimiento.
16Porque si bendijeres con el espíritu, el que ocupa lugar de un mero particular, ¿cómo dirá amén á tu acción de gracias? pues no sabe lo que has dicho.
17Porque tú, á la verdad, bien haces gracias; mas el otro no es edificado.
18Doy gracias á Dios que hablo lenguas más que todos vosotros:
19Pero en la iglesia más quiero hablar cinco palabras con mi sentido, para que enseñe también á los otros, que diez mil palabras en lengua desconocida.
20Hermanos, no seáis niños en el sentido, sino sed niños en la malicia: empero perfectos en el sentido.
21En la ley está escrito: En otras lenguas y en otros labios hablaré á este pueblo; y ni aun así me oirán, dice el Señor.
22Así que, las lenguas por señal son, no á los fieles, sino á los infieles: mas la profecía, no á los infieles, sino á los fieles.
23De manera que, si toda la iglesia se juntare en uno, y todos hablan lenguas, y entran indoctos ó infieles, ¿no dirán que estáis locos?
24Mas si todos profetizan, y entra algún infiel ó indocto, de todos es convencido, de todos es juzgado;
25Lo oculto de su corazón se hace manifiesto: y así, postrándose sobre el rostro, adorará á Dios, declarando que verdaderamente Dios está en vosotros.
26¿Qué hay pues, hermanos? Cuando os juntáis, cada uno de vosotros tiene salmo, tiene doctrina, tiene lengua, tiene revelación, tiene interpretación: hágase todo para edificación.
27Si hablare alguno en lengua extraña, sea esto por dos, ó á lo más tres, y por turno; mas uno interprete.
28Y si no hubiere intérprete, calle en la iglesia, y hable á sí mismo y á Dios.
29Asimismo, los profetas hablen dos ó tres, y los demás juzguen.
30Y si á otro que estuviere sentado, fuere revelado, calle el primero.
31Porque podéis todos profetizar uno por uno, para que todos aprendan, y todos sean exhortados.
32Y los espíritus de los que profetizaren, sujétense á los profetas;
33Porque Dios no es Dios de disensión, sino de paz; como en todas las iglesias de los santos.
34Vuestras mujeres callen en las congregaciones; porque no les es permitido hablar, sino que estén sujetas, como también la ley dice.
35Y si quieren aprender alguna cosa, pregunten en casa á sus maridos; porque deshonesta cosa es hablar una mujer en la congregación.
36Qué, ¿ha salido de vosotros la palabra de Dios? ¿ó á vosotros solos ha llegado?
37Si alguno á su parecer, es profeta, ó espiritual, reconozca lo que os escribo, porque son mandamientos del Señor.
38Mas el que ignora, ignore.
39Así que, hermanos, procurad profetizar; y no impidáis el hablar lenguas.
40Empero hágase todo decentemente y con orden.

1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
7And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
9So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
10There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
11Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
12Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
13Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
14For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
16Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
17For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
18I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
19Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
20Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
21In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
22Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
23If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
24But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
25And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
26How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
27If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
29Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
30If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
35And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
36What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
37If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
38But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
40Let all things be done decently and in order.

1Follow after love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
2For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God, for no one understands, but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.
3But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.
4He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.
5Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but even more that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.

14For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
15What should I do? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
16Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say?
17For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.
18I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.
19However, in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.
20Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.
21In the law it is written, “By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. They won’t even listen to me that way, says the Lord.”
22Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe.
23If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy?
24But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all.
25And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.
26What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, or has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.
27If any man speaks in another language, let there be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.
28But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself and to God.
29Let two or three of the prophets speak, and let the others discern.
30But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent.
31For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be exhorted.
32The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,
33for God is not a God of confusion but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.
34Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the law also says,
35if they desire to learn anything. “Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a wife to be talking in the assembly.”
36What!? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?
37If any man thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.
38But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking with other languages.
40Let all things be done decently and in order.
