Este es el relato de su rebelión: Salomón estaba edificando el terraplén, para reparar los muros de la Ciudad de David. Jeroboán era muy capaz, y cuando Salomón vio que era muy activo y valeroso, lo encargó de vigilar el trabajo obligatorio de los descendientes de la tribu de José.

Y la causa por qué éste alzó mano contra el rey, fué esta: Salomón edificando á Millo, cerró el portillo de la ciudad de David su padre.
