Cuando el pueblo de Israel se enteró de que Jeroboán había regresado de Egipto, le pidió que convocara a una reunión a todo el pueblo, y allí lo hicieron rey de Israel. Solamente la tribu de Judá continuó bajo el reinado de la familia de David.
Y aconteció, que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron y llamáronle á la congregación, é hiciéronle rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiese la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.
