1Roboam fue a Siquem, porque todos los israelitas se habían reunido allí para proclamarlo rey.
2Jeroboam hijo de Nabat se enteró de esto en Egipto, donde vivía desde que huyó del rey Salomón.
3Entonces mandaron a llamarlo, y Jeroboam fue con toda la asamblea de Israel a hablar con Roboam. Le dijeron:
4“Su padre nos impuso un yugo muy pesado. Si usted ahora aligera el duro trabajo y el yugo pesado que él nos impuso, nosotros le serviremos”.
5Roboam respondió: “Váyanse y vuelvan a verme dentro de tres días”. Así que el pueblo se retiró.
6El rey Roboam consultó con los ancianos que habían servido a su padre Salomón en vida, y les preguntó: “¿Qué me aconsejan ustedes que le responda a este pueblo?”.
7Ellos le contestaron: “Si hoy se pone usted al servicio de este pueblo y les responde con amabilidad, ellos le servirán para siempre”.
8Pero Roboam rechazó el consejo de los ancianos y consultó con los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y que estaban a su servicio.
9Les preguntó: “¿Qué consejo me dan ustedes? ¿Qué debemos responderle a este pueblo que me pide que aligere el yugo que mi padre les impuso?”.
10Los jóvenes que se habían criado con él le dijeron: “A ese pueblo que te pidió que les quitaras peso de encima, respóndeles así: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre.
11Si mi padre les impuso un yugo pesado, ¡yo lo haré más pesado todavía! Si mi padre los castigó con látigos, ¡yo los castigaré con escorpiones!””.
12Al tercer día, Jeroboam y todo el pueblo fueron a ver a Roboam, tal como el rey les había ordenado.
13Pero el rey les respondió con aspereza, ignorando el consejo que le habían dado los ancianos.
14Siguiendo el consejo de los jóvenes, les dijo: “Mi padre les hizo pesado el yugo, pero yo se lo haré más pesado todavía; mi padre los castigó con látigos, pero yo los castigaré con escorpiones”.
15Así que el rey no escuchó al pueblo, porque Yahvé mismo había dispuesto las cosas para que se cumpliera la promesa que le había hecho a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat por medio de Ahías de Siló.
16Cuando todos los israelitas vieron que el rey no les hacía caso, le respondieron: “¿Qué tenemos nosotros que ver con David? ¡No tenemos nada que ver con el hijo de Isaí! ¡Israel, cada uno a su casa! ¡David, ocúpate de tu propia familia!”. Y así, los israelitas se fueron a sus casas.
17Roboam solo reinó sobre los israelitas que vivían en las ciudades de Judá.
18Tiempo después, el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba a cargo del trabajo obligatorio, pero todos los israelitas lo mataron a pedradas. Entonces el rey Roboam subió a toda prisa a su carro y huyó a Jerusalén.
19Así fue como Israel se rebeló contra la familia de David hasta el día de hoy.
20Cuando los israelitas supieron que Jeroboam había regresado, lo invitaron a una asamblea y lo proclamaron rey de todo Israel. La única que se mantuvo fiel a la familia de David fue la tribu de Judá.
21Cuando Roboam llegó a Jerusalén, reunió a ciento ochenta mil de los mejores guerreros de las tribus de Judá y de Benjamín para pelear contra Israel y recuperar el reino para Roboam hijo de Salomón.
22Pero Dios le habló a Semaías, hombre de Dios, y le dijo:
23“Diles a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, a las tribus de Judá y Benjamín, y al resto del pueblo,
24que así dice Yahvé: “No vayan a pelear contra sus hermanos israelitas. Regrese cada uno a su casa, porque yo he dispuesto que esto suceda””. Ellos obedecieron la palabra de Yahvé y regresaron a sus casas, tal como él se lo ordenó.
25Jeroboam fortificó la ciudad de Siquem, en la región montañosa de Efraín, y se quedó a vivir allí. Después salió y fortificó a Penuel.
26Jeroboam pensó: “Es muy probable que el reino vuelva a manos de la familia de David.
27Si este pueblo sigue yendo a Jerusalén para ofrecer sacrificios en el templo de Yahvé, terminarán poniéndose de parte de su señor Roboam, el rey de Judá. Entonces me matarán y se irán con él”.
28Así que, después de buscar consejo, el rey hizo dos becerros de oro y le dijo al pueblo: “Ya no hace falta que suban a Jerusalén. ¡Aquí están, Israel, tus dioses que te sacaron de Egipto!”.
29Puso uno en Betel y el otro en Dan.
30Esto se convirtió en un gran pecado, pues el pueblo iba hasta Dan para adorar al becerro.
31Jeroboam también construyó santuarios en las colinas y nombró sacerdotes a gente común que no era de la tribu de Leví.
32Además, instituyó una fiesta el día quince del mes octavo, parecida a la fiesta que se celebraba en Judá. En Betel ofreció sacrificios en el altar que había construido para los becerros, y allí mismo instaló a los sacerdotes de los santuarios de las colinas.
33El día quince del mes octavo, mes que él mismo había elegido a su antojo, Jeroboam ofreció sacrificios en el altar de Betel e instituyó una fiesta para los israelitas, y subió al altar a quemar incienso.

1Y FUÉ Roboam á Sichêm; porque todo Israel había venido á Sichêm para hacerlo rey.
2Y aconteció, que como lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que estaba en Egipto, porque había huído de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto;
3Enviaron y llamáronle. Vino pues Jeroboam y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron á Roboam, diciendo:
4Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas ahora tú disminuye algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos.
5Y él les dijo: Idos, y de aquí á tres días volved á mí. Y el pueblo se fué.
6Entonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda á este pueblo?
7Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si tú fueres hoy siervo de este pueblo, y lo sirvieres, y respondiéndole buenas palabras les hablares, ellos te servirán para siempre.
8Mas él, dejado el consejo de los viejos que ellos le habían dado, tomó consejo con los mancebos que se habían criado con él, y estaban delante de él.
9Y díjoles: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos á este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros?
10Entonces los mancebos que se habían criado con él, le respondieron, diciendo: Así hablarás á este pueblo que te ha dicho estas palabras: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; mas tú disminúyenos algo: así les hablarás: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre.
11Ahora pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré á vuestro yugo; mi padre os hirió con azotes, mas yo os heriré con escorpiones.
12Y al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo á Roboam; según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved á mí al tercer día.
13Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, dejado el consejo de los ancianos que ellos le habían dado;
14Y hablóles conforme al consejo de los mancebos, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré á vuestro yugo; mi padre os hirió con azotes, mas yo os heriré con escorpiones.
15Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era ordenación de Jehová, para confirmar su palabra, que Jehová había hablado por medio de Ahías Silonita á Jeroboam hijo de Nabat.
16Y cuando todo el pueblo vió que el rey no les había oído, respondióle estas palabras, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No tenemos heredad en el hijo de Isaí. ¡Israel, á tus estancias! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fué á sus estancias.
17Mas reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá.
18Y el rey Roboam envió á Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero apedreóle todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se esforzó á subir en un carro, y huir á Jerusalem.
19Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy.
20Y aconteció, que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron y llamáronle á la congregación, é hiciéronle rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiese la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá.
21Y como Roboam vino á Jerusalem, juntó toda la casa de Judá y la tribu de Benjamín, ciento y ochenta mil hombres escogidos de guerra, para hacer guerra á la casa de Israel, y reducir el reino á Roboam hijo de Salomón.
22Mas fué palabra de Jehová á Semeías varón de Dios, diciendo:
23Habla á Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y á toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y á los demás del pueblo, diciendo:
24Así ha dicho Jehová: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno á su casa; porque este negocio yo lo he hecho. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volviéronse, y fuéronse, conforme á la palabra de Jehová.
25Y reedificó Jeroboam á Sichêm en el monte de Ephraim, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, reedificó á Penuel.
26Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino á la casa de David,
27Si este pueblo subiere á sacrificar á la casa de Jehová en Jerusalem: porque el corazón de este pueblo se convertirá á su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán á mí, y se tornarán á Roboam rey de Judá.
28Y habido consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: Harto habéis subido á Jerusalem: he aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, que te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto.
29Y puso el uno en Beth-el, y el otro puso en Dan.
30Y esto fué ocasión de pecado; porque el pueblo iba á adorar delante del uno, hasta Dan.
31Hizo también casa de altos, é hizo sacerdotes de la clase del pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví.
32Entonces instituyó Jeroboam solemnidad en el mes octavo, á los quince del mes, conforme á la solemnidad que se celebraba en Judá; y sacrificó sobre altar. Así hizo en Beth-el, sacrificando á los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Beth-el sacerdotes de los altos que él había fabricado.
33Sacrificó pues sobre el altar que él había hecho en Beth-el, á los quince del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su corazón; é hizo fiesta á los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar perfumes.

1And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.
2And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
3That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
4Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
5And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.
6And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?
7And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.
8But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
9And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
10And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.
13And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
14And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
17But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
20And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.
21And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
24Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.
26And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:
27If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
28Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
29And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan.
30And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.
31And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.
32And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beth-el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places which he had made.
33So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beth-el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

1Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
2When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it (for he was yet in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon, and Jeroboam lived in Egypt;
3and they sent and called him), Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
4“Your father made our yoke difficult. Now therefore make the hard service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.”
5He said to them, “Depart for three days, then come back to me.” So the people departed.
6King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to answer these people?”
7They replied, “If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them, and answer them with good words, then they will be your servants forever.”
8But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him.
9He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may answer these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter’?”
10The young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Tell these people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter to us’—tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist.
11Now my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’”
12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.”
13The king answered the people roughly, and abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him,
14and spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.”
15So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was a thing brought about from the LORD, that he might establish his word, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So Israel departed to their tents.
17But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18Then King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and all Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam hurried to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19So Israel rebelled against David’s house to this day.
20When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed David’s house, except for the tribe of Judah only.
21When Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.
22But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
23“Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, saying,
24‘The LORD says, “You shall not go up or fight against your brothers, the children of Israel. Everyone return to his house; for this thing is from me.”’” So they listened to the LORD’s word, and returned and went their way, according to the LORD’s word.
25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there and built Penuel.
26Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to David’s house.
27If this people goes up to offer sacrifices in the LORD’s house at Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.”
28So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said to them, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Look and behold your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”
29He set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.
30This thing became a sin, for the people went even as far as Dan to worship before the one there.
31He made houses of high places, and made priests from among all the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.
32Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he went up to the altar. He did so in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made, and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.
33He went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and he ordained a feast for the children of Israel, and went up to the altar to burn incense.
