1Ahora el rey David era viejo y avanzado en años; y aunque lo cubrían con cobijas, su cuerpo estaba frío.
2Entonces sus siervos le dijeron: Busquen una virgen joven para mi señor el rey, para cuidarlo y le sirva; duerma con él y le de calor.
3Así que, después de buscar en toda la tierra de Israel a una joven hermosa, vieron a Abisag, la sunamita, y la llevaron al rey.
4Ahora ella era muy hermosa; y ella cuidaba al rey, le servía en todo momento; pero el rey no tuvo relaciones con ella.
5Entonces Adonías, hijo de Haguit, se rebeló, dijo: yo seré rey; y alistó sus carruajes de guerra y sus jinetes, con cincuenta corredores por delante.
6Ahora, durante toda su vida, su padre nunca fue contra él ni le dijo: ¿Por qué lo has hecho? y era un hombre muy guapo, y más joven que Absalom.
7Y habló con Joab, hijo de Sarvia, y con el sacerdote Abiatar; y se pusieron de su lado y le dieron su apoyo.
8Pero el sacerdote Sadoc, y Benaía, hijo de Joiada, el profeta Natán y Simei y Rei, y los hombres de guerra de David no se pusieron del lado de Adonías.
9Entonces Adonías mató ovejas y bueyes y bestias gordas por la piedra de Zohelet, de Rogel; y envió a todos sus hermanos, los hijos del rey, y todos los hombres de Judá, los siervos del rey, para que vinieran a él:
10Pero no envió a buscar al profeta Natán, a Benaía, a los otros hombres de guerra, a su hermano Salomón.
11Entonces Natán dijo a Betsabé, la madre de Salomón: ¿Acaso no ha llegado a tus oídos que Adonías, el hijo de Haguit, se haya hecho rey sin el conocimiento de David nuestro señor?
12Ahora, permíteme hacer una sugerencia, para que puedas mantener tu vida a salvo y la vida de tu hijo Salomón.
13Ven ahora, ve al rey David y dile: ¿No me hiciste un juramento a mi siervo, oh señor mío, diciendo: De verdad, tu hijo Salomón será rey después de mí, él subirá al trono de mi reino? ¿Por qué entonces actúa Adonías como rey?
14Y mientras todavía hablas con el rey, iré detrás de ti y diré que tu historia es verdadera.
15Entonces Betsabé entró en la habitación del rey; ahora el rey era muy viejo, y Abisag la sunamita le estaba sirviendo.
16Y Betsabé descendió sobre su rostro en el suelo delante del rey, dándole honor. Y él dijo: ¿Cuál es tu deseo?
17Y ella le dijo: Señor, tú hiciste un juramento al Señor tu Dios, y diste tu palabra a tu sierva, diciendo: De verdad, tu hijo Salomón será rey después de mí, subirá al trono de mi Reino.
18Y ahora, mira, Adonías se ha hecho a sí mismo rey sin el conocimiento de mi señor;
19Y ha dado muerte a los bueyes y las bestias gordas y ovejas en gran número, y ha enviado a todos los hijos del rey, al sacerdote Abiatar y a Joab, el capitán del ejército; mas no ha invitado a tu siervo Salomón.
20Y ahora, mi señor el rey, los ojos de todo Israel están sobre ti, esperando que digas quién va a ocupar el lugar de mi señor el rey después de él.
21Pues sucederá, en cuanto mi señor el rey duerma con sus padres, yo y mi hijo Salomón seremos condenados a muerte.
22Y mientras ella seguía hablando con el rey, entró el profeta Natán.
23Y dijeron al rey: Aquí está el profeta Natán. Y cuando entró ante el rey, se postró sobre el suelo.
24Y Natán dijo: Rey señor mío, ¿has dicho: Adonías será rey después de mí, sentado en el trono de mi reino?
25Porque hoy ha bajado y ha matado bueyes, bestias gordas y ovejas en gran número, y ha enviado a todos los hijos del rey para que vengan a él, con los capitanes del ejército y el sacerdote Abiatar; y están festejando delante de él y gritando: ¡Larga vida al rey Adonías!
26Pero yo, tu siervo, y el sacerdote Sadoc, y Benaía, hijo de Joiada, y tu siervo Salomón, él no nos ha invitado.
27¿Ha hecho esto mi señor el rey, sin avisar a sus siervo quien debía ser colocado en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él?
28Entonces el rey David, en respuesta, dijo: Envía a Betsabé a venir a mí. Y ella entró y tomó su lugar delante del rey.
29Entonces el rey hizo un juramento y dijo: Por el Señor vivo, que ha sido mi salvador de todos mis problemas,
30Cuando te juré por el Señor, el Dios de Israel, diciendo: Ciertamente, tu hijo Salomón se hará rey después de mí, sentado en mi lugar en mi trono; Así lo haré este día.
31Entonces Betsabé descendió sobre su rostro al suelo, haciendo reverencia al rey, y dijo: Que mi señor, el rey David, siga viviendo para siempre.
32Y el rey David dijo: Llama al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán y a Benaía, hijo de Joiada. Y vinieron delante del rey.
33Y el rey les dijo: Toma contigo a los siervos de tu señor, y pon a mi hijo Salomón en mi mula, y llévalo a Gihón;
34Dejen que el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán ungirán con aceite santo sobre él para hacerle rey sobre Israel; y al sonar la bocina digan: ¡Larga vida al rey Salomón!
35Luego, suban tras él, y él entrará y tomará su lugar en el trono de mi reino; porque él debe ser rey en mi lugar, y yo he ordenado que él sea gobernante sobre Israel y sobre Judá.
36Y Benaía, hijo de Joiada, respondiendo al rey, dijo: Así sea: y que el Señor, el Dios de mi señor el rey, lo diga.
37Como el Señor ha estado con mi señor el rey, así puede estar con Salomón y hacer que el trono de su autoridad sea mayor que el de mi señor el rey David.
38Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc, y el profeta Natán, y Benaía, hijo de Joiada, y los cereteos y los peleteos, descendieron y pusieron a Salomón sobre la mula del rey David y lo llevaron a Gihón.
39Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc tomó el cuerno de aceite del santuario y ungió con aceite santo a Salomón. Y cuando sonó el cuerno, todas las personas dijeron: ¡Larga vida al rey Salomón!
40Y todo el pueblo subió tras él, tocando flautas, y se alegraron con gran alegría, y la tierra se estremeció con el sonido.
41Y llegó a oídos de Adonías y de todos los invitados que estaban con él cuando terminaron de comer. Y Joab, al oír el sonido del cuerno, dijo: ¿Cuál es la razón de este ruido en la ciudad?
42Y mientras las palabras estaban en sus labios, vino Jonatán, hijo del sacerdote Abiatar; Y Adonías dijo: Entra; Porque eres un hombre de buena fe y las noticias que tienes para nosotros serán buenas.
43Y respondiendo Jonatán, dijo a Adonías: No es así, pero nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey a Salomón:
44Y él envió con él al sacerdote Sadoc, al profeta Natán, a Benaía, hijo de Joiada, a los cereteos y a los peleteos; Y lo pusieron sobre la mula del rey.
45Entonces el sacerdote Sadoc y el profeta Natán lo ungieron con aceite santo y lo hicieron rey en Gihón; y volvieron de allí con alegría, y la ciudad estaba toda alborotada. Este es el ruido que ha llegado a tus oídos.
46Y ahora Salomón está sentado en el trono del reino.
47Y los siervos del rey se acercaron a nuestro señor el rey David, bendiciéndolo y diciendo: Que Dios haga el nombre de Salomón mejor que tu nombre, y el trono de su autoridad mayor que tu trono; y el rey se inclinó para adorar en su cama.
48Entonces el rey dijo: Alabado sea el Dios de Israel, que ha dado a uno de mi descendencia como rey en mi lugar este día y ha dejado que mis ojos lo vean.
49Y todos los invitados de Adonías se levantaron temerosos y se fueron, cada uno por su lado.
50Y Adonías estaba lleno de temor por causa de Salomón; Se levantó y fue al altar, y se puso las manos en los cuernos.
51Y le dieron a Salomón una palabra, diciendo: Mira, Adonías teme tanto al rey Salomón, que ha puesto sus manos sobre los cuernos del altar, diciendo: Que el rey Salomón primero me dé su juramento de que no matará a espada a su siervo.
52Y Salomón dijo: Si se ve que es un hombre de buena fe, ninguno de sus cabellos será tocado; pero si se ve algún delito en él, debe ser ejecutado.
53Envió, pues, el rey Salomón, y lo bajaron del altar. Y vino y dio honor al rey Salomón; Y Salomón le dijo: Ve a tu casa.

1COMO el rey David era viejo, y entrado en días, cubríanle de vestidos, mas no se calentaba.
2Dijéronle por tanto sus siervos: Busquen á mi señor el rey una moza virgen, para que esté delante del rey, y lo abrigue, y duerma á su lado, y calentará á mi señor el rey.
3Y buscaron una moza hermosa por todo el término de Israel, y hallaron á Abisag Sunamita, y trajéronla al rey.
4Y la moza era hermosa, la cual calentaba al rey, y le servía: mas el rey nunca la conoció.
5Entonces Adonía hijo de Haggith se levantó, diciendo: Yo reinaré. E hízose de carros y gente de á caballo, y cincuenta hombres que corriesen delante de él.
6Y su padre nunca lo entristeció en todos sus días con decirle: ¿Por qué haces así? Y también éste era de hermoso parecer; y habíalo engendrado después de Absalom.
7Y tenía tratos con Joab hijo de Sarvia, y con Abiathar sacerdote, los cuales ayudaban á Adonía.
8Mas Sadoc sacerdote, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y Nathán profeta, y Semei, y Reihi, y todos los grandes de David, no seguían á Adonía.
9Y matando Adonía ovejas y vacas y animales engordados junto á la peña de Zoheleth, que está cerca de la fuente de Rogel, convidó á todos sus hermanos los hijos del rey, y á todos los varones de Judá, siervos del rey:
10Mas no convidó á Nathán profeta, ni á Benaía, ni á los grandes, ni á Salomón su hermano.
11Y habló Nathán á Bath-sheba madre de Salomón, diciendo: ¿No has oído que reina Adonía hijo de Haggith, sin saberlo David nuestro señor?
12Ven pues ahora, y toma mi consejo, para que guardes tu vida, y la vida de tu hijo Salomón.
13Ve, y entra al rey David, y dile: Rey señor mío, ¿no has tú jurado á tu sierva, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono? ¿por qué pues reina Adonía?
14Y estando tú aún hablando con el rey, yo entraré tras ti, y acabaré tus razones.
15Entonces Bath-sheba entró al rey á la cámara: y el rey era muy viejo; y Abisag Sunamita servía al rey.
16Y Bath-sheba se inclinó, é hizo reverencia al rey. Y el rey dijo: ¿Qué tienes?
17Y ella le respondió: Señor mío, tú juraste á tu sierva por Jehová tu Dios, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono;
18Y he aquí ahora Adonía reina: y tú, mi señor rey, ahora no lo supiste.
19Ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á Abiathar sacerdote, y á Joab general del ejército; mas á Salomón tu siervo no ha convidado.
20Entre tanto, rey señor mío, los ojos de todo Israel están sobre ti, para que les declares quién se ha de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él.
21De otra suerte acontecerá, cuando mi señor el rey durmiere con sus padres, que yo y mi hijo Salomón seremos tenidos por culpables.
22Y estando aún hablando ella con el rey, he aquí Nathán profeta, que vino.
23Y dieron aviso al rey, diciendo: He aquí Nathán profeta: el cual como entró al rey, postróse delante del rey inclinando su rostro á tierra.
24Y dijo Nathán: Rey señor mío, ¿has tú dicho: Adonía reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono?
25Porque hoy ha descendido, y ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á los capitanes del ejército, y también á Abiathar sacerdote; y he aquí, están comiendo y bebiendo delante de él, y han dicho: ¡Viva el rey Adonía!
26Mas ni á mí tu siervo, ni á Sadoc sacerdote, ni á Benaía hijo de Joiada, ni á Salomón tu siervo, ha convidado.
27¿Es este negocio ordenado por mi señor el rey, sin haber declarado á tu siervo quién se había de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él?
28Entonces el rey David respondió, y dijo: Llamadme á Bath-sheba. Y ella entró á la presencia del rey, y púsose delante del rey.
29Y el rey juró, diciendo: Vive Jehová, que ha redimido mi alma de toda angustia,
30Que como yo te he jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel, diciendo: Tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono en lugar mío; que así lo haré hoy.
31Entonces Bath-sheba se inclinó al rey, su rostro á tierra, y haciendo reverencia al rey, dijo: Viva mi señor el rey David para siempre.
32Y el rey David dijo: Llamadme á Sadoc sacerdote, y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada. Y ellos entraron á la presencia del rey.
33Y el rey les dijo: Tomad con vosotros los siervos de vuestro señor, y haced subir á Salomón mi hijo en mi mula, y llevadlo á Gihón:
34Y allí lo ungirán Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta por rey sobre Israel; y tocaréis trompeta, diciendo: ¡Viva el rey Salomón!
35Después iréis vosotros detrás de él, y vendrá y se sentará en mi trono, y él reinará por mí; porque á él he ordenado para que sea príncipe sobre Israel y sobre Judá.
36Entonces Benaía hijo de Joiada respondió al rey, y dijo: Amén. Así lo diga Jehová, Dios de mi señor el rey.
37De la manera que Jehová ha sido con mi señor el rey, así sea con Salomón; y él haga mayor su trono que el trono de mi señor el rey David.
38Y descendió Sadoc sacerdote, y Nathán profeta, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y los Ceretheos y los Peletheos, é hicieron subir á Salomón en la mula del rey David, y lleváronlo á Gihón.
39Y tomando Sadoc sacerdote el cuerno del aceite del tabernáculo, ungió á Salomón: y tocaron trompeta, y dijo todo el pueblo: ¡Viva el rey Salomón!
40Después subió todo el pueblo en pos de él, y cantaba la gente con flautas, y hacían grandes alegrías, que parecía que la tierra se hundía con el clamor de ellos.
41Y oyólo Adonía, y todos los convidados que con él estaban, cuando ya habían acabado de comer. Y oyendo Joab el sonido de la trompeta, dijo: ¿Por qué se alborota la ciudad con estruendo?
42Estando aún él hablando, he aquí Jonathán hijo de Abiathar sacerdote vino, al cual dijo Adonía: Entra, porque tú eres hombre de esfuerzo, y traerás buenas nuevas.
43Y Jonathán respondió, y dijo á Adonía: Ciertamente nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey á Salomón:
44Y el rey ha enviado con él á Sadoc sacerdote y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada, y también á los Ceretheos y á los Peletheos, los cuales le hicieron subir en la mula del rey;
45Y Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta lo han ungido en Gihón por rey: y de allá han subido con alegrías, y la ciudad está llena de estruendo. Este es el alboroto que habéis oído.
46Y también Salomón se ha sentado en el trono del reino.
47Y aun los siervos del rey han venido á bendecir á nuestro señor el rey David, diciendo: Dios haga bueno el nombre de Salomón más que tu nombre, y haga mayor su trono que el tuyo. Y el rey adoró en la cama.
48Y también el rey habló así: Bendito sea Jehová Dios de Israel, que ha dado hoy quien se siente en mi trono, viéndolo mis ojos.
49Ellos entonces se estremecieron, y levantáronse todos los convidados que estaban con Adonía, y fuése cada uno por su camino.
50Mas Adonía, temiendo de la presencia de Salomón, levantóse y fuése, y cogió los cornijales del altar.
51Y fué hecho saber á Salomón, diciendo: He aquí que Adonía tiene miedo del rey Salomón: pues ha cogido los cornijales del altar, diciendo: Júreme hoy el rey Salomón que no matará á cuchillo á su siervo.
52Y Salomón dijo: Si él fuere virtuoso, ni uno de sus cabellos caerá en tierra: mas si se hallare mal en él, morirá.
53Y envió el rey Salomón, y trajéronlo del altar; y él vino, é inclinóse al rey Salomón. Y Salomón le dijo: Vete á tu casa.

1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
7And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah the king’s servants:
10But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
13Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
15And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
16And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
17And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
19And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
22And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
23And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
26But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
28Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-sheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king.
29And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
30Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
31Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
32And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
33The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
35Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too.
37As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
38So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
41And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
44And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule:
45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
46And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
47And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
48And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
49And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
52And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
53So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.

1Now King David was old and advanced in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he couldn’t keep warm.
2Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young virgin be sought for my lord the king. Let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.”
3So they sought for a beautiful young lady throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4The young lady was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and served him; but the king didn’t know her intimately.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6His father had not displeased him at any time in saying, “Why have you done so?” and he was also a very handsome man; and he was born after Absalom.
7He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9Adonijah killed sheep, cattle, and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants;
10but he didn’t call Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother.
11Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Haven’t you heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord doesn’t know it?
12Now therefore come, please let me give you counsel, that you may save your own life and your son Solomon’s life.
13Go in to King David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then does Adonijah reign?’
14Behold, while you are still talking there with the king, I will also come in after you and confirm your words.”
15Bathsheba went in to the king in his room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.
16Bathsheba bowed and showed respect to the king. The king said, “What would you like?”
17She said to him, “My lord, you swore by the LORD your God to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’
18Now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, don’t know it.
19He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn’t called Solomon your servant.
20You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered criminals.”
22Behold, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.
23They told the king, saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!” When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24Nathan said, “My lord, King, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?
25For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
26But he hasn’t called me, even me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon.
27Was this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven’t shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
28Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba in to me.” She came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.
29The king vowed and said, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,
30most certainly as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place;’ I will most certainly do this today.”
31Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and showed respect to the king, and said, “Let my lord King David live forever!”
32King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” They came before the king.
33The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
34Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
35Then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne; for he shall be king in my place. I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.”
36Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, “Amen. May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so.
37As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
38So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”
40All the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth shook with their sound.
41Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they had finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is this noise of the city being in an uproar?”
42While he yet spoke, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said, “Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.”
43Jonathan answered Adonijah, “Most certainly our lord King David has made Solomon king.
44The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king’s mule.
45Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. They have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you have heard.
46Also, Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom.
47Moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne;’ and the king bowed himself on the bed.
48Also thus said the king, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne today, my eyes even seeing it.’”
49All the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and each man went his way.
50Adonijah was afraid because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and hung onto the horns of the altar.
51Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, behold, he is hanging onto the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’”
52Solomon said, “If he shows himself a worthy man, not a hair of his shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.”
53So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed down to King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
