1ORA il re Davide divenne vecchio e molto attempato; e benchè lo coprissero di panni, non però si riscaldava.
2Laonde i suoi servitori gli dissero: Cerchisi al re, nostro signore, una fanciulla vergine, la quale stia davanti al re, e lo governi, e ti giaccia in seno; acciocchè il re, mio signore, si riscaldi.
3Cercarono adunque, per tutte le contrade d'Israele, una bella fanciulla; e trovarono Abisag Sunamita, e la condussero al re.
4E la fanciulla era bellissima, e governava il re, e lo serviva; ma il re non la conobbe.
5Allora Adonia, figliuolo di Hagghit, s'innalzò, dicendo: Io regnerò; e si fornì di carri e di cavalieri; e cinquant'uomini correvano davanti a lui.
6(Or suo padre non volle contristarlo in vita sua, dicendo: Perchè hai fatta cotesta cosa? Ed oltre a ciò, egli era bellissimo, e sua madre l'avea partorito dopo Absalom.)
7Poi tenne ragionamento con Ioab, figliuolo di Seruia, e col sacerdote Ebiatar; ed essi gli porsero aiuto, e lo seguitarono.
8Ma il sacerdote Sadoc, e Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, e il profeta Natan, e Simi, e Rei, e gli uomini prodi che Davide avea, non furono della parte di Adonia.
9Or Adonia ammazzò pecore e buoi, ed animali grassi, presso alla pietra di Zohelet, ch'è vicin della fonte di Roghel; e invitò tutti i suoi fratelli, figliuoli del re, e tutti gli uomini di Giuda ch'erano al servigio del re;
10ma non invitò il profeta Natan, nè Benaia, nè gli uomini prodi, nè Salomone, suo fratello.
11E Natan disse a Batseba, madre di Salomone: Non hai tu udito che Adonia, figliuolo di Hagghit, è stato fatto re, senza che Davide, nostro signore, ne sappia nulla?
12Ora dunque vieni, e permetti, ti prego, che io ti dia un consiglio, acciocchè tu scampi la vita tua, e la vita di Salomone, tuo figliuolo.
13Va', ed entra dal re Davide, e digli: Non hai tu, o re, mio signore, giurato alla tua servente, dicendo: Certo, Salomone, tuo figliuolo, regnerà dopo me, e sederà in sul mio trono? perchè dunque è stato fatto re Adonia?
14Ecco, mentre tu sarai ancora quivi, parlando col re, io entrerò dopo te, e supplirò le tue parole.
15Batseba dunque entrò dal re dentro alla camera. Ora il re era molto vecchio, ed Abisag Sunamita lo serviva.
16E Batseba s'inchinò, e fece riverenza al re. E il re le disse: Che hai?
17Ed ella gli disse: Signor mio, tu hai giurato alla tua servente per lo Signore Iddio tuo: Certo, Salomone, tuo figliuolo, regnerà dopo me, e sederà in sul mio trono.
18E pure ecco ora, Adonia è stato fatto re, senza che ora tu, o re, mio signore, ne abbi saputo nulla.
19Ed ha ammazzati buoi, ed animali grassi, e pecore, in gran numero; ed ha invitati tutti i figliuoli del re, e il sacerdote Ebiatar, e Ioab, capo dell'esercito; ma non ha chiamato il tuo servitore Salomone.
20Ora gli occhi di tutto Israele son volti verso te, o re, mio signore; acciocchè tu dichiari loro chi ha da sedere in sul trono del re, mio signore, dopo lui.
21Altrimenti avverrà che, quando il re, mio signore, giacerà co' suoi padri, io e il mio figliuolo Salomone saremo riputati colpevoli.
22Or, mentre ella parlava ancora col re, ecco, il profeta Natan sopraggiunse.
23E ciò fu rapportato al re, dicendo: Ecco il profeta Natan. Ed egli venne alla presenza del re, e gli s'inchinò, con la faccia verso terra.
24E Natan disse al re: O re, mio signore, hai tu detto: Adonia regnerà dopo me, ed egli sarà quel che sederà sopra il mio trono?
25Conciossiachè oggi egli sia sceso, ed abbia ammazzati buoi, ed animali grassi, e pecore in gran numero; ed abbia invitati tutti i figliuoli del re, ed i capi dell'esercito, e il sacerdote Ebiatar; ed ecco, mangiano e bevono davanti a lui, ed hanno detto: Viva il re Adonia.
26Ma egli non ha chiamato me, tuo servitore, nè il sacerdote Sadoc, nè Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, nè Salomone, tuo servitore.
27Questa cosa è ella stata fatta da parte del re, mio signore, senza che tu abbi dichiarato al tuo servitore chi ha da sedere sopra il trono del re, mio signore, dopo lui?
28E il re Davide rispose, e disse: Chiamatemi Batseba. Ed ella venne davanti al re, e stette in piè in sua presenza.
29E il re giurò, e disse: Come il Signore, che ha riscossa l'anima mia d'ogni tribolazione, vive,
30io ti farò oggi, come io ti ho giurato per lo Signore Iddio di Israele, dicendo: Salomone, tuo figliuolo, regnerà dopo me; ed egli sederà in sul mio trono, in luogo mio.
31E Batseba s'inchinò con la faccia verso terra, e fece riverenza al re, e disse: Possa il re Davide, mio signore, vivere in perpetuo.
32Poi il re Davide disse: Chiamatemi il sacerdote Sadoc, e il profeta Natan, e Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada. Ed essi vennero in presenza del re.
33E il re disse loro: Prendete con voi i servitori del vostro signore, e fate montar Salomone, mio figliuolo sopra la mia mula, e menatelo sopra Ghihon.
34E il sacerdote Sadoc e il profeta Natan unganlo quivi per re sopra Israele. Poi sonate con la tromba, e dite: Viva il re Salomone.
35Poi ritornatevene dietro a lui, ed egli verrà, e sederà sopra il mio trono, e regnerà in luogo mio; perciocchè io l'ho ordinato per esser conduttore sopra Israele e sopra Giuda.
36E Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, rispose al re, e disse: Amen, così dica il Signore Iddio del re, mio signore.
37Siccome il Signore è stato col re, mio signore, così sia con Salomone; e magnifichi il suo trono, anche sopra il trono del re Davide, mio signore.
38Il sacerdote Sadoc adunque, e il profeta Natan e Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, e i Cheretei, e i Peletei, scesero, e fecero montare Salomone sopra la mula del re Davide, e lo condussero sopra Ghihon.
39E il sacerdote Sadoc prese il corno dell'olio del Tabernacolo, ed unse Salomone. Poi si sonò con la tromba, e tutto il popolo disse: Viva il re Salomone.
40E tutto il popolo ritornò dietro a lui, sonando flauti, e rallegrandosi di una grande allegrezza, talchè la terra si schiantava per le lor grida.
41Or Adonia, e tutti gl'invitati ch'erano con lui, come finivano di mangiare, udirono questo romore. Ioab ancora udì il suon della tromba, e disse: Che vuol dire questo grido della città, che è così commossa?
42Mentre egli parlava ancora, ecco, Gionatan, figliuolo del sacerdote Ebiatar, giunse. Ed Adonia gli disse: Vien pure; perciocchè tu sei un valent'uomo, e devi recar buone novelle.
43Ma Gionatan rispose, e disse ad Adonia: Per certo il re Davide, nostro signore, ha costituito re Salomone.
44E il re ha mandato con lui il sacerdote Sadoc, e il profeta Natan, e Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, e i Cheretei, e i Peletei; ed essi l'hanno fatto montare sopra la mula del re.
45E il sacerdote Sadoc e il profeta Natan l'hanno unto per re in Ghihon; e di là se ne son tornati con allegrezza; e la città se n'è commossa. Quest'è il romore che voi avete udito.
46Ed anche Salomone si è posto a sedere sopra il trono reale.
47Ed anche i servitori del re son venuti per benedire il re Davide, nostro signore, dicendo: Iddio renda il nome di Salomone vie più eccellente che il tuo nome, e magnifichi il suo trono vie più che il tuo. E il re ha adorato in sul letto;
48ed anche ha detto così: Benedetto sia il Signore Iddio d'Israele, il quale ha oggi stabilito uno che segga sopra il mio trono, davanti agli occhi miei.
49Allora tutti gl'invitati da Adonia sbigottirono, e si levarono, e andarono, ciascuno a suo cammino.
50Ed Adonia, temendo di Salomone, si levò, e andò, e impugnò le corna dell'Altare.
51E ciò fu rapportato a Salomone, dicendo: Ecco, Adonia teme del re Salomone; ed ecco, egli ha impugnate le corna dell'Altare, dicendo: Giurimi oggi il re Salomone, ch'egli non farà morire il suo servitore con la spada.
52E Salomone disse: Se egli si porta da uomo virtuoso, ei non caderà pur uno de' suoi capelli a terra; ma, se si trova in lui del male, morrà.
53E il re Salomone mandò a ritrarlo d'appresso all'Altare. Ed egli venne, e s'inchinò al re Salomone. E Salomone gli disse: Vattene a casa tua.

1COMO el rey David era viejo, y entrado en días, cubríanle de vestidos, mas no se calentaba.
2Dijéronle por tanto sus siervos: Busquen á mi señor el rey una moza virgen, para que esté delante del rey, y lo abrigue, y duerma á su lado, y calentará á mi señor el rey.
3Y buscaron una moza hermosa por todo el término de Israel, y hallaron á Abisag Sunamita, y trajéronla al rey.
4Y la moza era hermosa, la cual calentaba al rey, y le servía: mas el rey nunca la conoció.
5Entonces Adonía hijo de Haggith se levantó, diciendo: Yo reinaré. E hízose de carros y gente de á caballo, y cincuenta hombres que corriesen delante de él.
6Y su padre nunca lo entristeció en todos sus días con decirle: ¿Por qué haces así? Y también éste era de hermoso parecer; y habíalo engendrado después de Absalom.
7Y tenía tratos con Joab hijo de Sarvia, y con Abiathar sacerdote, los cuales ayudaban á Adonía.
8Mas Sadoc sacerdote, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y Nathán profeta, y Semei, y Reihi, y todos los grandes de David, no seguían á Adonía.
9Y matando Adonía ovejas y vacas y animales engordados junto á la peña de Zoheleth, que está cerca de la fuente de Rogel, convidó á todos sus hermanos los hijos del rey, y á todos los varones de Judá, siervos del rey:
10Mas no convidó á Nathán profeta, ni á Benaía, ni á los grandes, ni á Salomón su hermano.
11Y habló Nathán á Bath-sheba madre de Salomón, diciendo: ¿No has oído que reina Adonía hijo de Haggith, sin saberlo David nuestro señor?
12Ven pues ahora, y toma mi consejo, para que guardes tu vida, y la vida de tu hijo Salomón.
13Ve, y entra al rey David, y dile: Rey señor mío, ¿no has tú jurado á tu sierva, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono? ¿por qué pues reina Adonía?
14Y estando tú aún hablando con el rey, yo entraré tras ti, y acabaré tus razones.
15Entonces Bath-sheba entró al rey á la cámara: y el rey era muy viejo; y Abisag Sunamita servía al rey.
16Y Bath-sheba se inclinó, é hizo reverencia al rey. Y el rey dijo: ¿Qué tienes?
17Y ella le respondió: Señor mío, tú juraste á tu sierva por Jehová tu Dios, diciendo: Salomón tu hijo reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono;
18Y he aquí ahora Adonía reina: y tú, mi señor rey, ahora no lo supiste.
19Ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á Abiathar sacerdote, y á Joab general del ejército; mas á Salomón tu siervo no ha convidado.
20Entre tanto, rey señor mío, los ojos de todo Israel están sobre ti, para que les declares quién se ha de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él.
21De otra suerte acontecerá, cuando mi señor el rey durmiere con sus padres, que yo y mi hijo Salomón seremos tenidos por culpables.
22Y estando aún hablando ella con el rey, he aquí Nathán profeta, que vino.
23Y dieron aviso al rey, diciendo: He aquí Nathán profeta: el cual como entró al rey, postróse delante del rey inclinando su rostro á tierra.
24Y dijo Nathán: Rey señor mío, ¿has tú dicho: Adonía reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono?
25Porque hoy ha descendido, y ha matado bueyes, y animales engordados, y muchas ovejas, y ha convidado á todos los hijos del rey, y á los capitanes del ejército, y también á Abiathar sacerdote; y he aquí, están comiendo y bebiendo delante de él, y han dicho: ¡Viva el rey Adonía!
26Mas ni á mí tu siervo, ni á Sadoc sacerdote, ni á Benaía hijo de Joiada, ni á Salomón tu siervo, ha convidado.
27¿Es este negocio ordenado por mi señor el rey, sin haber declarado á tu siervo quién se había de sentar en el trono de mi señor el rey después de él?
28Entonces el rey David respondió, y dijo: Llamadme á Bath-sheba. Y ella entró á la presencia del rey, y púsose delante del rey.
29Y el rey juró, diciendo: Vive Jehová, que ha redimido mi alma de toda angustia,
30Que como yo te he jurado por Jehová Dios de Israel, diciendo: Tu hijo Salomón reinará después de mí, y él se sentará en mi trono en lugar mío; que así lo haré hoy.
31Entonces Bath-sheba se inclinó al rey, su rostro á tierra, y haciendo reverencia al rey, dijo: Viva mi señor el rey David para siempre.
32Y el rey David dijo: Llamadme á Sadoc sacerdote, y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada. Y ellos entraron á la presencia del rey.
33Y el rey les dijo: Tomad con vosotros los siervos de vuestro señor, y haced subir á Salomón mi hijo en mi mula, y llevadlo á Gihón:
34Y allí lo ungirán Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta por rey sobre Israel; y tocaréis trompeta, diciendo: ¡Viva el rey Salomón!
35Después iréis vosotros detrás de él, y vendrá y se sentará en mi trono, y él reinará por mí; porque á él he ordenado para que sea príncipe sobre Israel y sobre Judá.
36Entonces Benaía hijo de Joiada respondió al rey, y dijo: Amén. Así lo diga Jehová, Dios de mi señor el rey.
37De la manera que Jehová ha sido con mi señor el rey, así sea con Salomón; y él haga mayor su trono que el trono de mi señor el rey David.
38Y descendió Sadoc sacerdote, y Nathán profeta, y Benaía hijo de Joiada, y los Ceretheos y los Peletheos, é hicieron subir á Salomón en la mula del rey David, y lleváronlo á Gihón.
39Y tomando Sadoc sacerdote el cuerno del aceite del tabernáculo, ungió á Salomón: y tocaron trompeta, y dijo todo el pueblo: ¡Viva el rey Salomón!
40Después subió todo el pueblo en pos de él, y cantaba la gente con flautas, y hacían grandes alegrías, que parecía que la tierra se hundía con el clamor de ellos.
41Y oyólo Adonía, y todos los convidados que con él estaban, cuando ya habían acabado de comer. Y oyendo Joab el sonido de la trompeta, dijo: ¿Por qué se alborota la ciudad con estruendo?
42Estando aún él hablando, he aquí Jonathán hijo de Abiathar sacerdote vino, al cual dijo Adonía: Entra, porque tú eres hombre de esfuerzo, y traerás buenas nuevas.
43Y Jonathán respondió, y dijo á Adonía: Ciertamente nuestro señor el rey David ha hecho rey á Salomón:
44Y el rey ha enviado con él á Sadoc sacerdote y á Nathán profeta, y á Benaía hijo de Joiada, y también á los Ceretheos y á los Peletheos, los cuales le hicieron subir en la mula del rey;
45Y Sadoc sacerdote y Nathán profeta lo han ungido en Gihón por rey: y de allá han subido con alegrías, y la ciudad está llena de estruendo. Este es el alboroto que habéis oído.
46Y también Salomón se ha sentado en el trono del reino.
47Y aun los siervos del rey han venido á bendecir á nuestro señor el rey David, diciendo: Dios haga bueno el nombre de Salomón más que tu nombre, y haga mayor su trono que el tuyo. Y el rey adoró en la cama.
48Y también el rey habló así: Bendito sea Jehová Dios de Israel, que ha dado hoy quien se siente en mi trono, viéndolo mis ojos.
49Ellos entonces se estremecieron, y levantáronse todos los convidados que estaban con Adonía, y fuése cada uno por su camino.
50Mas Adonía, temiendo de la presencia de Salomón, levantóse y fuése, y cogió los cornijales del altar.
51Y fué hecho saber á Salomón, diciendo: He aquí que Adonía tiene miedo del rey Salomón: pues ha cogido los cornijales del altar, diciendo: Júreme hoy el rey Salomón que no matará á cuchillo á su siervo.
52Y Salomón dijo: Si él fuere virtuoso, ni uno de sus cabellos caerá en tierra: mas si se hallare mal en él, morirá.
53Y envió el rey Salomón, y trajéronlo del altar; y él vino, é inclinóse al rey Salomón. Y Salomón le dijo: Vete á tu casa.

1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
7And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah the king’s servants:
10But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
13Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
15And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
16And Bath-sheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
17And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
19And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
22And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
23And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
26But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
28Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-sheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king.
29And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
30Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
31Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
32And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
33The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
35Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too.
37As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
38So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
41And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
44And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule:
45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
46And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
47And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
48And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
49And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
52And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
53So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
World English Bible
1Now King David was old and advanced in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he couldn’t keep warm.
2Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young virgin be sought for my lord the king. Let her stand before the king, and cherish him; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm.”
3So they sought for a beautiful young lady throughout all the borders of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4The young lady was very beautiful; and she cherished the king, and served him; but the king didn’t know her intimately.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” Then he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6His father had not displeased him at any time in saying, “Why have you done so?” and he was also a very handsome man; and he was born after Absalom.
7He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and they followed Adonijah and helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9Adonijah killed sheep, cattle, and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel; and he called all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants;
10but he didn’t call Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother.
11Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, “Haven’t you heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith reigns, and David our lord doesn’t know it?
12Now therefore come, please let me give you counsel, that you may save your own life and your son Solomon’s life.
13Go in to King David, and tell him, ‘Didn’t you, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then does Adonijah reign?’
14Behold, while you are still talking there with the king, I will also come in after you and confirm your words.”
15Bathsheba went in to the king in his room. The king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite was serving the king.
16Bathsheba bowed and showed respect to the king. The king said, “What would you like?”
17She said to him, “My lord, you swore by the LORD your God to your servant, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’
18Now, behold, Adonijah reigns; and you, my lord the king, don’t know it.
19He has slain cattle and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has called all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the army; but he hasn’t called Solomon your servant.
20You, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, that you should tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it will happen, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered criminals.”
22Behold, while she was still talking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.
23They told the king, saying, “Behold, Nathan the prophet!” When he had come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24Nathan said, “My lord, King, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?
25For he has gone down today, and has slain cattle, fatlings, and sheep in abundance, and has called all the king’s sons, the captains of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
26But he hasn’t called me, even me your servant, Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon.
27Was this thing done by my lord the king, and you haven’t shown to your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
28Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba in to me.” She came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.
29The king vowed and said, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,
30most certainly as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place;’ I will most certainly do this today.”
31Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth and showed respect to the king, and said, “Let my lord King David live forever!”
32King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” They came before the king.
33The king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon.
34Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’
35Then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne; for he shall be king in my place. I have appointed him to be prince over Israel and over Judah.”
36Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, “Amen. May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so.
37As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.”
38So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the Tent, and anointed Solomon. They blew the trumpet; and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!”
40All the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth shook with their sound.
41Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they had finished eating. When Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “Why is this noise of the city being in an uproar?”
42While he yet spoke, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said, “Come in; for you are a worthy man, and bring good news.”
43Jonathan answered Adonijah, “Most certainly our lord King David has made Solomon king.
44The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and they have caused him to ride on the king’s mule.
45Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon. They have come up from there rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that you have heard.
46Also, Solomon sits on the throne of the kingdom.
47Moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name, and make his throne greater than your throne;’ and the king bowed himself on the bed.
48Also thus said the king, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne today, my eyes even seeing it.’”
49All the guests of Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and each man went his way.
50Adonijah was afraid because of Solomon; and he arose, and went, and hung onto the horns of the altar.
51Solomon was told, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon; for, behold, he is hanging onto the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not kill his servant with the sword.’”
52Solomon said, “If he shows himself a worthy man, not a hair of his shall fall to the earth; but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.”
53So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed down to King Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
