1Ben Adad, rey de Harán, convocó a todo su ejército. Junto con treinta y dos reyes y sus caballos y carros reunidos, marchó para sitiar Samaria, para luchar contra ella.
2Envió mensajeros a Acab, rey de Israel, a la ciudad para decirle: “Esto es lo que dice Ben Adad:
3¡Tu plata y tu oro me pertenecen ahora, y tus mejores esposas e hijos también me pertenecen!”
4“Es como dices, mi señor el rey”, respondió el rey de Israel. “Soy tuyo, así como todo lo que me pertenece”.
5Los mensajeros regresaron y dijeron: “Esto es lo que dice Ben Adad: te he enviado un mensaje exigiendo que me des tu plata, tu oro, tus esposas y tus hijos.
6Pero mañana a esta hora voy a enviar a mis hombres a registrar tu palacio y las casas de tus funcionarios. Tomarán y se llevarán todo lo que consideres valioso”.
7El rey de Israel llamó a todos los ancianos del país y les dijo: “¡Miren cómo este hombre trata de causar problemas! Cuando exigió mis esposas y mis hijos, mi plata y mi oro, no dije que no”.
8Todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo presente respondieron: “No lo escuchen. No aceptes sus exigencias”.
9Entonces el rey dijo a los mensajeros de Ben Adad: “Dile a mi señor el rey: Todo lo que exigiste al principio lo hará tu servidor, pero no puedo acceder a esta última exigencia”. Los mensajeros le llevaron la respuesta.
10Ben Adad le respondió: “¡Que los dioses me hagan tanto y más si queda suficiente polvo en Samaria para dar a mis súbditos un puñado a cada uno!”
11El rey de Israel le respondió: “Dile esto: Un hombre que se pone la armadura no debe presumir como quien se la quita”.
12Ben Adad recibió este mensaje mientras él y los reyes estaban bebiendo en sus tiendas. Inmediatamente dio la orden a sus oficiales: “¡Prepárense para atacar!”. Así que se prepararon para atacar la ciudad.
13Al mismo tiempo, un profeta se acercó a Acab, rey de Israel, y le dijo: “Esto es lo que dice el Señor: ¿Ves este enorme ejército? Sólo mira, porque hoy te haré victorioso, y te convencerás que yo soy el Señor”.
14“Pero ¿quién va a hacer esto?” preguntó Acab. El profeta respondió: “Esto es lo que dice el Señor: serán los oficiales jóvenes bajo los comandantes de distrito”. “¿Y quién va a iniciar la batalla?” , preguntó. El profeta respondió: “¡Tú!”.
15Así que Acab convocó a los 232 oficiales jóvenes de los comandantes de distrito y reunió a los 7.000 soldados que formaban el ejército de Israel.
16Partieron al mediodía, mientras Ben Adad y los treinta y dos reyes que lo acompañaban estaban ocupados emborrachándose en sus tiendas.
17Los jóvenes oficiales de los comandantes de distrito tomaron la delantera. Los exploradores que Ben-hadad había enviado vinieron y le informaron: “Los soldados enemigos avanzan desde Samaria”.
18“Si vienen en son de paz, tómenlos vivos”, ordenó. “Si vienen a atacar, tómenlos vivos”.
19Los jóvenes oficiales de los comandantes de distrito avanzaron desde la ciudad, seguidos por el ejército.
20Cada hombre mató a su oponente, y los arameos huyeron. Los israelitas los persiguieron, pero Ben Adad, rey de Harán, escapó a caballo con su caballería.
21Entonces el rey de Israel salió y atacó a los caballos y a los carros. Infligió una gran derrota a los arameos.
22Más tarde el profeta se presentó ante el rey de Israel y le dijo: “Ve a reforzar tus defensas y revisa lo que debes hacer, porque en la primavera el rey de Harán vendrá a atacarte de nuevo”.
23Mientras tanto, los oficiales del rey de Harán le dijeron: “Sus dioses son dioses de las montañas. Por eso pudieron derrotarnos. Pero si luchamos contra ellos en las tierras bajas, podremos vencerlos.
24Debes hacer lo siguiente: destituir a cada uno de los reyes de sus cargos y sustituirlos por comandantes.
25También tienes que levantar otro ejército para reemplazar el que perdiste: caballo por caballo, carro por carro. Entonces podremos luchar contra ellos en las tierras bajas y los venceremos definitivamente”. Ben Adad escuchó sus consejos e hizo lo que le dijeron.
26Cuando llegó la primavera, Ben Adad convocó al ejército arameo y fue a atacar a Israel en Afec.
27El ejército israelita también fue convocado y aprovisionado. Fueron a enfrentar a los arameos. Pero cuando los israelitas instalaron su campamento frente al enemigo, parecían un par de rebaños de cabras en comparación con el ejército arameo que llenaba toda la tierra.
28Entonces el hombre de Dios se acercó al rey de Israel y le dijo: “Esto es lo que dice el Señor: Como los arameos han dicho: ‘El Señor es sólo un dios de las montañas y no de los valles’, yo te haré victorioso sobre todo este enorme ejército. Entonces se convencerán de que yo soy el Señor”.
29Los ejércitos acamparon uno frente al otro durante siete días. Al séptimo día tuvo lugar la batalla. Los israelitas mataron a 100.000 de la infantería aramea en un solo día.
30El resto huyó a la ciudad de Afec, donde un muro se derrumbó sobre 27.000 de los que quedaron. Ben Adad también corrió a la ciudad y se escondió en una habitación interior.
31Los oficiales de Ben Adad le dijeron: “Mira, hemos oído que los reyes israelitas son misericordiosos. Vamos a rendirnos ante el rey de Israel, llevando sacos en la cintura y cuerdas en la cabeza. Quizá os deje vivir”.
32Así que, llevando cilicio en la cintura y cuerdas en la cabeza, fueron y se rindieron al rey de Israel, y le dijeron: “Tu siervo Ben Adad te pide: ‘Por favor, déjame vivir’”. El rey respondió: “¿Sigue vivo? Lo considero mi hermano”.
33Los hombres pensaron que esto era una buena señal e inmediatamente le tomaron la palabra al rey, diciendo: “Sí, Ben-Adad es tu hermano”. “¡Vayan a buscarlo!”, dijo el rey. Así que Ben-hadad salió de su escondite y se entregó a Acab, quien lo subió a su carro.
34Ben-hadad le dijo: “Te devolveré las ciudades que mi padre tomó de tu padre, y podrás organizar tus propios lugares de comercio en Damasco, como hizo mi padre en Samaria”. “Al hacer este pacto te libero”, respondió Acab. Hizo un tratado con Ben Adad y lo dejó ir.
35A raíz de un mensaje que recibió del Señor, uno de los hijos de los profetas le dijo a su colega: “Por favor, pégame”. Pero el hombre se negó a pegarle.
36Entonces el profeta le dijo: “Como no has hecho lo que dijo el Señor, en cuanto me dejes un león te va a matar”. Cuando el hombre se fue, vino un león y lo mató.
37El profeta encontró a otro hombre y le dijo: “Por favor, pégame”. Entonces el hombre lo golpeó, hiriéndolo.
38Entonces el profeta fue y se quedó junto al camino, esperando al rey. Se había disfrazado con una venda sobre los ojos.
39Al pasar el rey, le gritó “Tu siervo había salido a luchar en medio de la batalla, cuando de repente se acercó un hombre con un prisionero y me dijo: ‘¡Guarda a este hombre! Si por alguna razón se escapa, pagarás su vida con la tuya, o serás multado con un talento de plata’.
40Pero mientras tu siervo estaba ocupado en otras cosas, el hombre se escapó”. “Así que ese será tu castigo”, le dijo el rey de Israel. “Tú mismo te has condenado”.
41Entonces el profeta se quitó rápidamente la venda de los ojos, y el rey de Israel reconoció que era uno de los profetas.
42Le dijo al rey: “Esto es lo que dice el Señor: Has dejado ir a un hombre que yo había decidido que muriera. Por lo tanto, pagarás su vida con tu vida, tu pueblo por su pueblo”.
43El rey de Israel regresó a su casa en Samaria, enfadado y furioso.

1ENTONCES Ben-adad rey de Siria juntó á todo su ejército, y con él treinta y dos reyes, con caballos y carros: y subió, y puso cerco á Samaria, y combatióla.
2Y envió mensajeros á la ciudad á Achâb rey de Israel, diciendo:
3Así ha dicho Ben-adad: Tu plata y tu oro es mío, y tus mujeres y tus hijos hermosos son míos.
4Y el rey de Israel respondió, y dijo: Como tú dices, rey señor mío, yo soy tuyo, y todo lo que tengo.
5Y volviendo los mensajeros otra vez, dijeron: Así dijo Ben-adad: Yo te envié á decir: Tu plata y tu oro, y tus mujeres y tus hijos me darás.
6Además mañana á estas horas enviaré yo á ti mis siervos, los cuales escudriñarán tu casa, y las casas de tus siervos; y tomarán con sus manos, y llevarán todo lo precioso que tuvieres.
7Entonces el rey de Israel llamó á todos los ancianos de la tierra, y díjoles: Entended, y ved ahora cómo éste no busca sino mal: pues que ha enviado á mí por mis mujeres y mis hijos, y por mi plata y por mi oro; y yo no se lo he negado.
8Y todos los ancianos y todo el pueblo le respondieron: No le obedezcas, ni hagas lo que te pide.
9Entonces él respondió á los embajadores de Ben-adad: Decid al rey mi señor: Haré todo lo que mandaste á tu siervo al principio; mas esto no lo puedo hacer. Y los embajadores fueron, y diéronle la respuesta.
10Y Ben-adad tornó á enviarle á decir: Así me hagan los dioses, y así me añadan, que el polvo de Samaria no bastará á los puños de todo el pueblo que me sigue.
11Y el rey de Israel respondió, y dijo: Decidle, que no se alabe el que se ciñe, como el que ya se desciñe.
12Y como él oyó esta palabra, estando bebiendo con los reyes en las tiendas, dijo á sus siervos: Poned. Y ellos pusieron contra la ciudad.
13Y he aquí un profeta se llegó á Achâb rey de Israel, y le dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: ¿Has visto esta grande multitud? he aquí yo te la entregaré hoy en tu mano, para que conozcas que yo soy Jehová.
14Y respondió Achâb: ¿Por mano de quién? Y él dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Por mano de los criados de los príncipes de las provincias. Y dijo Achâb: ¿Quién comenzará la batalla? Y él respondió: Tú.
15Entonces él reconoció los criados de los príncipes de las provincias, los cuales fueron doscientos treinta y dos. Luego reconoció todo el pueblo, todos los hijos de Israel, que fueron siete mil.
16Y salieron á medio día. Y estaba Ben-adad bebiendo, borracho en las tiendas, él y los reyes, los treinta y dos reyes que habían venido en su ayuda.
17Y los criados de los príncipes de las provincias salieron los primeros. Y había Ben-adad enviado quien le dió aviso, diciendo: Han salido hombres de Samaria.
18El entonces dijo: Si han salido por paz, tomadlos vivos; y si han salido para pelear, tomadlos vivos.
19Salieron pues de la ciudad los criados de los príncipes de las provincias, y en pos de ellos el ejército.
20E hirió cada uno al que venía contra sí: y huyeron los Siros, siguiéndolos los de Israel. Y el rey de Siria, Ben-adad, se escapó en un caballo con alguna gente de caballería.
21Y salió el rey de Israel, é hirió la gente de á caballo, y los carros; y deshizo los Siros con grande estrago.
22Llegándose luego el profeta al rey de Israel, le dijo: Ve, fortalécete, y considera y mira lo que has de hacer; porque pasado el año, el rey de Siria ha de venir contra ti.
23Y los siervos del rey de Siria le dijeron: Sus dioses son dioses de los montes, por eso nos han vencido; mas si peleáremos con ellos en la llanura, se verá si no los vencemos.
24Haz pues así: Saca á los reyes cada uno de su puesto, y pon capitanes en lugar de ellos.
25Y tú, fórmate otro ejército como el ejército que perdiste, caballos por caballos, y carros por carros; luego pelearemos con ellos en campo raso, y veremos si no los vencemos. Y él les dió oído, é hízolo así.
26Pasado el año, Ben-adad reconoció los Siros, y vino á Aphec á pelear contra Israel.
27Y los hijos de Israel fueron también inspeccionados, y tomando provisiones fuéronles al encuentro; y asentaron campo lo hijos de Israel delante de ellos, como dos rebañuelos de cabras; y los Siros henchían la tierra.
28Llegándose entonces el varón de Dios al rey de Israel, hablóle diciendo: Así dijo Jehová: Por cuanto los Siros han dicho, Jehová es Dios de los montes, no Dios de los valles, yo entregaré toda esta grande multitud en tu mano, para que conozcáis que yo soy Jehová.
29Siete días tuvieron asentado campo los unos delante de los otros, y al séptimo día se dió la batalla: y mataron los hijos de Israel de los Siros en un día cien mil hombres de á pie.
30Los demás huyeron á Aphec, á la ciudad: y el muro cayó sobre veinte y siete mil hombres que habían quedado. También Ben-adad vino huyendo á la ciudad, y escondíase de cámara en cámara.
31Entonces sus siervos le dijeron: He aquí, hemos oído de los reyes de la casa de Israel que son reyes clementes: pongamos pues ahora sacos en nuestros lomos, y sogas en nuestras cabezas, y salgamos al rey de Israel: por ventura te salvará la vida.
32Ciñeron pues sus lomos de sacos, y sogas á sus cabezas, y vinieron al rey de Israel, y dijéronle: Tu siervo Ben-adad dice: Ruégote que viva mi alma. Y él respondió: Si él vive aún, mi hermano es.
33Esto tomaron aquellos hombres por buen agüero, y presto tomaron esta palabra de su boca, y dijeron: ¡Tu hermano Ben-adad! Y él dijo: Id, y traedle. Ben-adad entonces se presentó á Achâb, y él le hizo subir en un carro.
34Y díjole Ben-adad: Las ciudades que mi padre tomó al tuyo, yo las restituiré; y haz plazas en Damasco para ti, como mi padre las hizo en Samaria. Y yo, dijo Achâb, te dejaré partir con esta alianza. Hizo pues con él alianza, y dejóle ir.
35Entonces un varón de los hijos de los profetas dijo á su compañero por palabra de Dios: Hiéreme ahora. Mas el otro varón no quiso herirle.
36Y él le dijo: Por cuanto no has obedecido á la palabra de Jehová, he aquí en apartándote de mí, te herirá un león. Y como se apartó de él, topóle un león, é hirióle.
37Encontróse luego con otro hombre, y díjole: Hiéreme ahora. Y el hombre le dió un golpe, é hízole una herida.
38Y el profeta se fué, y púsose delante del rey en el camino, y disfrazóse con un velo sobre los ojos.
39Y como el rey pasaba, él dió voces al rey, y dijo: Tu siervo salió entre la tropa: y he aquí apartándose uno, trájome un hombre, diciendo: Guarda á este hombre, y si llegare á faltar, tu vida será por la suya, ó pagarás un talento de plata.
40Y como tu siervo estaba ocupado á una parte y á otra, él desapareció. Entonces el rey de Israel le dijo: Esa será tu sentencia: tú la has pronunciado.
41Pero él se quitó de presto el velo de sobre sus ojos, y el rey de Israel conoció que era de los profetas.
42Y él le dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Por cuanto soltaste de la mano el hombre de mi anatema, tu vida será por la suya, y tu pueblo por el suyo.
43Y el rey de Israel se fué á su casa triste y enojado, y llegó á Samaria.

1And Ben-hadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.
2And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Ben-hadad,
3Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.
4And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
5And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Ben-hadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;
6Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
7Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.
8And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.
9Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
10And Ben-hadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.
11And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.
12And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.
13And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
14And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.
15Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.
17And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.
18And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.
19So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.
20And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.
21And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.
23And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.
24And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
25And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.
26And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Ben-hadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.
27And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.
28And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
29And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
30But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.
31And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.
32So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
33Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.
35And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.
36Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.
37Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.
38So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.
39And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.
40And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.
41And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.
42And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
43And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.

1Ben Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, with horses and chariots. He went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.
2He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, “Ben Hadad says,
3‘Your silver and your gold are mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.’”
4The king of Israel answered, “It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have.”
5The messengers came again and said, “Ben Hadad says, ‘I sent indeed to you, saying, “You shall deliver me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children;
6but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants. Whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they will put it in their hand, and take it away.”’”
7Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I didn’t deny him.”
8All the elders and all the people said to him, “Don’t listen, and don’t consent.”
9Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’” The messengers departed and brought him back the message.
10Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, “The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria will be enough for handfuls for all the people who follow me.”
11The king of Israel answered, “Tell him, ‘Don’t let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.’”
12When Ben Hadad heard this message as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, he said to his servants, “Prepare to attack!” So they prepared to attack the city.
13Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, “The LORD says, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand today. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
14Ahab said, “By whom?” He said, “The LORD says, ‘By the young men of the princes of the provinces.’” Then he said, “Who shall begin the battle?” He answered, “You.”
15Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.
16They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him.
17The young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out from Samaria.”
18He said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
19So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them.
20They each killed his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.
21The king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
22The prophet came near to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself, and plan what you must do, for at the return of the year, the king of Syria will come up against you.”
23The servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let’s fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they.
24Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place.
25Muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than they are.” He listened to their voice and did so.
26At the return of the year, Ben Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.
27The children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and went against them. The children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of young goats, but the Syrians filled the country.
28A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “The LORD says, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The LORD is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD.’”
29They encamped opposite each other for seven days. Then on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Syrians in one day.
30But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. Ben Hadad fled and came into the city, into an inner room.
31His servants said to him, “See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life.”
32So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, “Your servant Ben Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’” He said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
33Now the men observed diligently and hurried to take this phrase; and they said, “Your brother Ben Hadad.” Then he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben Hadad came out to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.
34Ben Hadad said to him, “The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria.” “I”, said Ahab, “will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go.
35A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by the LORD’s word, “Please strike me!” The man refused to strike him.
36Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the LORD’s voice, behold, as soon as you have departed from me, a lion will kill you.” As soon as he had departed from him, a lion found him and killed him.
37Then he found another man, and said, “Please strike me.” The man struck him and wounded him.
38So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.
39As the king passed by, he cried to the king, and he said, “Your servant went out into the middle of the battle; and behold, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man! If by any means he is missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’
40As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” The king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be. You yourself have decided it.”
41He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets.
42He said to him, “The LORD says, ‘Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life will take the place of his life, and your people take the place of his people.’”
43The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.
