El rey Hiram, de Tiro, siempre había sido un gran admirador de David, de modo que cuando supo que el rey Salomón, hijo de David, reinaba en Israel, envió embajadores para felicitarlo y desearle un buen reinado.
HIRAM rey de Tiro envió también sus siervos á Salomón, luego que oyó que lo habían ungido por rey en lugar de su padre: porque Hiram había siempre amado á David.

Salomón aprovechó la ocasión y le envió este mensaje a Hiram: «Tú sabes que mi padre no pudo construir un templo en el que se pudiera adorar al Señor su Dios, debido a las numerosas guerras que tuvo que librar. Siempre estuvo esperando el momento en que el Señor le permitiera vencer a todos sus enemigos.
Entonces Salomón envió á decir á Hiram:

Tú sabes como mi padre David no pudo edificar casa al nombre de Jehová su Dios, por las guerras que le cercaron, hasta que Jehová puso sus enemigos bajo las plantas de sus pies.
Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.
“You know that David my father could not build a house for the name of the LORD his God because of the wars which were around him on every side, until the LORD put his enemies under the soles of his feet.
Y ahora, el Señor mi Dios ha dado paz a Israel en todo lugar; no tengo enemigos ni quien me quiera hacer daño.
Ahora Jehová mi Dios me ha dado reposo por todas partes; que ni hay adversarios, ni mal encuentro.

Por eso, pienso edificar un templo para el Señor mi Dios, en conformidad a la promesa que le hizo a mi padre de que yo lo edificaría. Porque el Señor le dijo: “Tu hijo, a quien pondré en tu lugar en el trono, me edificará un templo”.
Yo por tanto he determinado ahora edificar casa al nombre de Jehová mi Dios, como Jehová lo habló á David mi padre, diciendo: Tu hijo, que yo pondré en lugar tuyo en tu trono, él edificará casa á mi nombre.
And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.

»Ahora te ruego que me ayudes en este proyecto. Envía tus hombres a las montañas del Líbano para que preparen madera de cedro para mí. Yo enviaré hombres para que trabajen junto con ellos, y pagaré a tus hombres lo que tú indiques; porque, como tú sabes, no hay en Israel quien sepa cortar la madera como lo hacen los sidonios».
Manda pues ahora que me corten cedros del Líbano; y mis siervos estarán con los tuyos, y yo te daré por tus siervos el salario que tú dijeres: porque tú sabes bien que ninguno hay entre nosotros que sepa labrar la madera como los Sidonios.
Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
Now therefore command that cedar trees be cut for me out of Lebanon. My servants will be with your servants; and I will give you wages for your servants according to all that you say. For you know that there is nobody among us who knows how to cut timber like the Sidonians.”
Cuando Hiram recibió el mensaje de Salomón, se sintió muy complacido, y dijo: «Alabado sea el Señor, por haberle dado a David un hijo sabio para que sea rey de la gran nación de Israel».
Y como Hiram oyó las palabras de Salomón, holgóse en gran manera, y dijo: Bendito sea hoy Jehová, que dió hijo sabio á David sobre este pueblo tan grande.
And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.

Entonces envió su respuesta a Salomón: «He recibido tu mensaje, y haré lo que me has pedido acerca de la madera. Puedo proporcionarte madera de cedro y de pino.
Y envió Hiram á decir á Salomón: He oído lo que me mandaste á decir: yo haré todo lo que te pluguiere acerca de la madera de cedro, y la madera de haya.
And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.

Mis hombres llevarán los troncos hasta el mar y con ellos formarán balsas. Las haremos navegar a lo largo de la costa hasta el lugar en donde tú la necesites; entonces desarmaremos las balsas y te entregaremos la madera. Tú puedes pagarme con alimento para mi casa».
Mis siervos la llevarán desde el Líbano á la mar; y yo la pondré en balsas por la mar hasta el lugar que tú me señalares, y allí se desatará, y tú la tomarás: y tú harás mi voluntad en dar de comer á mi familia.
My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.

Entonces Hiram proporcionó a Salomón toda la madera de cedro y de pino que él quiso.
