1Rejetant donc toute malice et toute ruse, la dissimulation, l’envie, et toute médisance,
2désirez, comme des enfants nouveau-nés, le lait spirituel et pur, afin que par lui vous croissiez pour le salut,
3si vous avez goûté que le Seigneur est bon.
4Approchez-vous de lui, pierre vivante, rejetée par les hommes, mais choisie et précieuse devant Dieu;
5et vous-mêmes, comme des pierres vivantes, édifiez-vous pour former une maison spirituelle, un saint sacerdoce, afin d’offrir des victimes spirituelles, agréables à Dieu par Jésus-Christ.
6Car il est dit dans l’Écriture: Voici, je mets en Sion une pierre angulaire, choisie, précieuse; et celui qui croit en elle ne sera point confus.
7L’honneur est donc pour vous, qui croyez. Mais, pour les incrédules, La pierre qu’ont rejetée ceux qui bâtissaient Est devenue la principale de l’angle, Et une pierre d’achoppement Et un rocher de scandale;
8ils s’y heurtent pour n’avoir pas cru à la parole, et c’est à cela qu’ils sont destinés.
9Vous, au contraire, vous êtes une race élue, un sacerdoce royal, une nation sainte, un peuple acquis, afin que vous annonciez les vertus de celui qui vous a appelés des ténèbres à son admirable lumière,
10vous qui autrefois n’étiez pas un peuple, et qui maintenant êtes le peuple de Dieu, vous qui n’aviez pas obtenu miséricorde, et qui maintenant avez obtenu miséricorde.
11Bien-aimés, je vous exhorte, comme étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre, à vous abstenir des convoitises charnelles qui font la guerre à l’âme.
12Ayez au milieu des païens une bonne conduite, afin que, là même où ils vous calomnient comme si vous étiez des malfaiteurs, ils remarquent vos bonnes œuvres, et glorifient Dieu, au jour où il les visitera.
13Soyez soumis, à cause du Seigneur, à toute autorité établie parmi les hommes, soit au roi comme souverain,
14soit aux gouverneurs comme envoyés par lui pour punir les malfaiteurs et pour approuver les gens de bien.
15Car c’est la volonté de Dieu qu’en pratiquant le bien vous réduisiez au silence les hommes ignorants et insensés,
16étant libres, sans faire de la liberté un voile qui couvre la méchanceté, mais agissant comme des serviteurs de Dieu.
17Honorez tout le monde; aimez les frères; craignez Dieu; honorez le roi.
18Serviteurs, soyez soumis en toute crainte à vos maîtres, non seulement à ceux qui sont bons et doux, mais aussi à ceux qui sont d’un caractère difficile.
19Car c’est une grâce que de supporter des afflictions par motif de conscience envers Dieu, quand on souffre injustement.
20En effet, quelle gloire y a-t-il à supporter de mauvais traitements pour avoir commis des fautes? Mais si vous supportez la souffrance lorsque vous faites ce qui est bien, c’est une grâce devant Dieu.
21Et c’est à cela que vous avez été appelés, parce que Christ aussi a souffert pour vous, vous laissant un exemple, afin que vous suiviez ses traces,
22Lui qui n’a point commis de péché, et dans la bouche duquel il ne s’est point trouvé de fraude;
23lui qui, injurié, ne rendait point d’injures, maltraité, ne faisait point de menaces, mais s’en remettait à celui qui juge justement;
24lui qui a porté lui-même nos péchés en son corps sur le bois, afin que morts aux péchés nous vivions pour la justice; lui par les meurtrissures duquel vous avez été guéris.
25Car vous étiez comme des brebis errantes. Mais maintenant vous êtes retournés vers le pasteur et le gardien de vos âmes.

1DEJANDO pues toda malicia, y todo engaño, y fingimientos, y envidias, y todas las detracciones,
2Desead, como niños recién nacidos, la leche espiritual, sin engaño, para que por ella crezcáis en salud:
3Si empero habéis gustado que el Señor es benigno;
4Al cual allegándoos, piedra viva, reprobada cierto de los hombres, empero elegida de Dios, preciosa,
5Vosotros también, como piedras vivas, sed edificados una casa espiritual, y un sacerdocio santo, para ofrecer sacrificios espirituales, agradables á Dios por Jesucristo.
6Por lo cual también contiene la Escritura: He aquí, pongo en Sión la principal piedra del ángulo, escogida, preciosa; y el que creyere en ella, no será confundido.
7Ella es pues honor á vosotros que creéis: mas para los desobedientes, la piedra que los edificadores reprobaron, ésta fué hecha la cabeza del ángulo;
8Y Piedra de tropiezo, y roca de escándalo á aquellos que tropiezan en la palabra, siendo desobedientes; para lo cual fueron también ordenados.
9Mas vosotros sois linaje escogido, real sacerdocio, gente santa, pueblo adquirido, para que anunciéis las virtudes de aquel que os ha llamado de las tinieblas á su luz admirable:
10Vosotros, que en el tiempo pasado no erais pueblo, mas ahora sois pueblo de Dios; que en el tiempo pasado no habíais alcanzado misericordia, mas ahora habéis alcanzado misericordia.
11Amados, yo os ruego como á extranjeros y peregrinos, os abstengáis de los deseos carnales que batallan contra el alma,
12Teniendo vuestra conversación honesta entre los Gentiles; para que, en lo que ellos murmuran de vosotros como de malhechores, glorifiquen á Dios en el día de la visitación, estimándoos por las buenas obras.
13Sed pues sujetos á toda ordenación humana por respeto á Dios: ya sea al rey, como á superior;
14Ya á los gobernadores, como de él enviados para venganza de los malhechores, y para loor de los que hacen bien.
15Porque esta es la voluntad de Dios; que haciendo bien, hagáis callar la ignorancia de los hombres vanos:
16Como libres, y no como teniendo la libertad por cobertura de malicia, sino como siervos de Dios.
17Honrad á todos. Amad la fraternidad. Temed á Dios. Honrad al rey.
18Siervos, sed sujetos con todo temor á vuestros amos; no solamente á los buenos y humanos, sino también á los rigurosos.
19Porque esto es agradable, si alguno á causa de la conciencia delante de Dios, sufre molestias padeciendo injustamente.
20Porque ¿qué gloria es, si pecando vosotros sois abofeteados, y lo sufrís? mas si haciendo bien sois afligidos, y lo sufrís, esto ciertamente es agradable delante de Dios.
21Porque para esto sois llamados; pues que también Cristo padeció por nosotros, dejándonos ejemplo, para que vosotros sigáis sus pisadas:
22El cual no hizo pecado; ni fué hallado engaño en su boca:
23Quien cuando le maldecían, no retornaba maldición; cuando padecía, no amenazaba, sino remitía la causa al que juzga justamente:
24El cual mismo llevó nuestros pecados en su cuerpo sobre el madero, para que nosotros siendo muertos á los pecados, vivamos á la justicia: por la herida del cual habéis sido sanados.
25Porque vosotros erais como ovejas descarriadas; mas ahora habéis vuelto al Pastor y Obispo de vuestras almas.

1Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

1Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
2as newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk, that with it you may grow,
3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4Come to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.
5You also as living stones are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious. He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”
7For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,”
8and, “a stumbling stone and a rock of offense.” For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims to abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
12having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good works and glorify God in the day of visitation.
13Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme,
14or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.

19For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.
20For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.
21For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,
22who didn’t sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.”
23When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.
24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds.
25For you were going astray like sheep; but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
