1Gettando dunque lungi da voi ogni malizia, e ogni frode, e le ipocrisie, e le invidie, ed ogni sorta di maldicenze, come bambini pur ora nati,
2appetite il puro latte spirituale, onde per esso cresciate per la salvezza,
3se pure avete gustato che il Signore è buono.
4Accostandovi a lui, pietra vivente, riprovata bensì dagli uomini ma innanzi a Dio eletta e preziosa, anche voi,
5come pietre viventi, siete edificati qual casa spirituale, per esser un sacerdozio santo per offrire sacrifici spirituali, accettevoli a Dio per mezzo di Gesù Cristo.
6Poiché si legge nella Scrittura: Ecco, io pongo in Sion una pietra angolare, eletta, preziosa; e chiunque crede in lui non sarà confuso.
7Per voi dunque che credete ell’è preziosa; ma per gl’increduli la pietra che gli edificatori hanno riprovata è quella ch’è divenuta la pietra angolare, e una pietra d’inciampo e un sasso d’intoppo:
8essi, infatti, essendo disubbidienti, intoppano nella Parola; ed a questo sono stati anche destinati.
9Ma voi siete una generazione eletta, un real sacerdozio, una gente santa, un popolo che Dio s’è acquistato, affinché proclamiate le virtù di Colui che vi ha chiamati dalle tenebre alla sua maravigliosa luce;
10voi, che già non eravate un popolo, ma ora siete il popolo di Dio; voi, che non avevate ottenuto misericordia, ma ora avete ottenuto misericordia.
11Diletti, io v’esorto come stranieri e pellegrini ad astenervi dalle carnali concupiscenze, che guerreggiano contro l’anima,
12avendo una buona condotta fra i Gentili; affinché laddove sparlano di voi come di malfattori, essi, per le vostre buone opere che avranno osservate, glorifichino Iddio nel giorno ch’Egli li visiterà.
13Siate soggetti, per amor del Signore, ad ogni autorità creata dagli uomini: al re, come al sovrano;
14ai governatori, come mandati da lui per punire i malfattori e per dar lode a quelli che fanno il bene.
15Poiché questa è la volontà di Dio: che, facendo il bene, turiate la bocca alla ignoranza degli uomini stolti;
16come liberi, ma non usando già della libertà quel manto che copra la malizia, ma come servi di Dio.
17Onorate tutti. Amate la fratellanza. Temete Iddio. Rendete onore al re.
18Domestici, siate con ogni timore soggetti ai vostri padroni; non solo ai buoni e moderati, ma anche a quelli che son difficili.
19Poiché questo è accettevole: se alcuno, per motivo di coscienza davanti a Dio, sopporta afflizioni, patendo ingiustamente.
20Infatti, che vanto c’è se, peccando ed essendo malmenati, voi sopportate pazientemente? Ma se facendo il bene, eppur patendo, voi sopportate pazientemente, questa è cosa grata a Dio.
21Perché a questo siete stati chiamati: poiché anche Cristo ha patito per voi, lasciandovi un esempio, onde seguiate le sue orme;
22egli, che non commise peccato, e nella cui bocca non fu trovata alcuna frode;
23che, oltraggiato, non rendeva gli oltraggi; che, soffrendo, non minacciava, ma si rimetteva nelle mani di Colui che giudica giustamente;
24egli, che ha portato egli stesso i nostri peccati nel suo corpo, sul legno, affinché, morti al peccato, vivessimo per la giustizia, e mediante le cui lividure siete stati sanati.
25Poiché eravate erranti come pecore; ma ora siete tornati al Pastore e Vescovo delle anime vostre.

1DEJANDO pues toda malicia, y todo engaño, y fingimientos, y envidias, y todas las detracciones,
2Desead, como niños recién nacidos, la leche espiritual, sin engaño, para que por ella crezcáis en salud:
3Si empero habéis gustado que el Señor es benigno;
4Al cual allegándoos, piedra viva, reprobada cierto de los hombres, empero elegida de Dios, preciosa,
5Vosotros también, como piedras vivas, sed edificados una casa espiritual, y un sacerdocio santo, para ofrecer sacrificios espirituales, agradables á Dios por Jesucristo.
6Por lo cual también contiene la Escritura: He aquí, pongo en Sión la principal piedra del ángulo, escogida, preciosa; y el que creyere en ella, no será confundido.
7Ella es pues honor á vosotros que creéis: mas para los desobedientes, la piedra que los edificadores reprobaron, ésta fué hecha la cabeza del ángulo;
8Y Piedra de tropiezo, y roca de escándalo á aquellos que tropiezan en la palabra, siendo desobedientes; para lo cual fueron también ordenados.
9Mas vosotros sois linaje escogido, real sacerdocio, gente santa, pueblo adquirido, para que anunciéis las virtudes de aquel que os ha llamado de las tinieblas á su luz admirable:
10Vosotros, que en el tiempo pasado no erais pueblo, mas ahora sois pueblo de Dios; que en el tiempo pasado no habíais alcanzado misericordia, mas ahora habéis alcanzado misericordia.
11Amados, yo os ruego como á extranjeros y peregrinos, os abstengáis de los deseos carnales que batallan contra el alma,
12Teniendo vuestra conversación honesta entre los Gentiles; para que, en lo que ellos murmuran de vosotros como de malhechores, glorifiquen á Dios en el día de la visitación, estimándoos por las buenas obras.
13Sed pues sujetos á toda ordenación humana por respeto á Dios: ya sea al rey, como á superior;
14Ya á los gobernadores, como de él enviados para venganza de los malhechores, y para loor de los que hacen bien.
15Porque esta es la voluntad de Dios; que haciendo bien, hagáis callar la ignorancia de los hombres vanos:
16Como libres, y no como teniendo la libertad por cobertura de malicia, sino como siervos de Dios.
17Honrad á todos. Amad la fraternidad. Temed á Dios. Honrad al rey.
18Siervos, sed sujetos con todo temor á vuestros amos; no solamente á los buenos y humanos, sino también á los rigurosos.
19Porque esto es agradable, si alguno á causa de la conciencia delante de Dios, sufre molestias padeciendo injustamente.
20Porque ¿qué gloria es, si pecando vosotros sois abofeteados, y lo sufrís? mas si haciendo bien sois afligidos, y lo sufrís, esto ciertamente es agradable delante de Dios.
21Porque para esto sois llamados; pues que también Cristo padeció por nosotros, dejándonos ejemplo, para que vosotros sigáis sus pisadas:
22El cual no hizo pecado; ni fué hallado engaño en su boca:
23Quien cuando le maldecían, no retornaba maldición; cuando padecía, no amenazaba, sino remitía la causa al que juzga justamente:
24El cual mismo llevó nuestros pecados en su cuerpo sobre el madero, para que nosotros siendo muertos á los pecados, vivamos á la justicia: por la herida del cual habéis sido sanados.
25Porque vosotros erais como ovejas descarriadas; mas ahora habéis vuelto al Pastor y Obispo de vuestras almas.

1Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
15For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
16As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.
17Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
18Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
19For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.
20For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
21For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
22Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
23Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
World English Bible
1Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
2as newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk, that with it you may grow,
3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4Come to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.
5You also as living stones are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious. He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”
7For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,”
8and, “a stumbling stone and a rock of offense.” For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims to abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
12having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good works and glorify God in the day of visitation.
13Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme,
14or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.
15For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.
16Live as free people, yet not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.
17Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
18Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.
19For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.
20For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.
21For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,
22who didn’t sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.”
23When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.
24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds.
25For you were going astray like sheep; but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
