1Desgleichen sollen die Weiber ihren Männern untertan sein, auf daß auch die, so nicht glauben an das Wort, durch der Weiber Wandel ohne Wort gewonnen werden,
2wenn sie ansehen euren keuschen Wandel in der Furcht.
3Ihr Schmuck soll nicht auswendig sein mit Haarflechten und Goldumhängen oder Kleideranlegen,
4sondern der verborgene Mensch des Herzens unverrückt mit sanftem und stillem Geiste; das ist köstlich vor Gott.
5Denn also haben sich auch vorzeiten die heiligen Weiber geschmückt, die ihre Hoffnung auf Gott setzten und ihren Männern untertan waren,
6wie die Sara Abraham gehorsam war und hieß ihn Herr; deren Töchter ihr geworden seid, so ihr wohltut und euch nicht laßt schüchtern machen.
7Desgleichen, ihr Männer, wohnet bei ihnen mit Vernunft und gebet dem weiblichen als dem schwächeren Werkzeuge seine Ehre, als die auch Miterben sind der Gnade des Lebens, auf daß eure Gebete nicht verhindert werden.
8Endlich aber seid allesamt gleichgesinnt, mitleidig, brüderlich, barmherzig, freundlich.
9Vergeltet nicht Böses mit Bösem oder Scheltwort mit Scheltwort, sondern dagegen segnet, und wisset, daß ihr dazu berufen seid, daß ihr den Segen erbet.
10Denn wer leben will und gute Tage sehen, der schweige seine Zunge, daß sie nichts Böses rede, und seine Lippen, daß sie nicht trügen.
11Er wende sich vom Bösen und tue Gutes; er suche Frieden und jage ihm nach.
12Denn die Augen des HERRN merken auf die Gerechten und seine Ohren auf ihr Gebet; das Angesicht aber des HERRN steht wider die, die Böses tun.
13Und wer ist, der euch schaden könnte, so ihr dem Gutem nachkommt?
14Und ob ihr auch leidet um Gerechtigkeit willen, so seid ihr doch selig. Fürchtet euch aber vor ihrem Trotzen nicht und erschrecket nicht;
15heiligt aber Gott den HERRN in euren Herzen. Seid allezeit bereit zur Verantwortung jedermann, der Grund fordert der Hoffnung, die in euch ist,
16und das mit Sanftmütigkeit und Furcht; und habt ein gutes Gewissen, auf daß die, so von euch afterreden als von Übeltätern, zu Schanden werden, daß sie geschmäht haben euren guten Wandel in Christo.
17Denn es ist besser, so es Gottes Wille ist, daß ihr von Wohltat wegen leidet als von Übeltat wegen.
18Sintemal auch Christus einmal für unsre Sünden gelitten hat, der Gerechte für die Ungerechten, auf daß er uns zu Gott führte, und ist getötet nach dem Fleisch, aber lebendig gemacht nach dem Geist.
19In demselben ist er auch hingegangen und hat gepredigt den Geistern im Gefängnis,
20die vorzeiten nicht glaubten, da Gott harrte und Geduld hatte zu den Zeiten Noahs, da man die Arche zurüstete, in welcher wenige, das ist acht Seelen, gerettet wurden durchs Wasser;
21welches nun auch uns selig macht in der Taufe, die durch jenes bedeutet ist, nicht das Abtun des Unflats am Fleisch, sondern der Bund eines guten Gewissens mit Gott durch die Auferstehung Jesu Christi,
22welcher ist zur Rechten Gottes in den Himmel gefahren, und sind ihm untertan die Engel und die Gewaltigen und die Kräfte.

1ASIMISMO vosotras, mujeres, sed sujetas á vuestros maridos; para que también los que no creen á la palabra, sean ganados sin palabra por la conversación de sus mujeres,
2Considerando vuestra casta conversación, que es en temor.
3El adorno de las cuales no sea exterior con encrespamiento del cabello, y atavío de oro, ni en compostura de ropas;
4Sino el hombre del corazón que está encubierto, en incorruptible ornato de espíritu agradable y pacífico, lo cual es de grande estima delante de Dios.
5Porque así también se ataviaban en el tiempo antiguo aquellas santas mujeres que esperaban en Dios, siendo sujetas á sus maridos:
6Como Sara obedecía á Abraham, llamándole señor; de la cual vosotras sois hechas hijas, haciendo bien, y no sois espantadas de ningún pavor.
7Vosotros maridos, semejantemente, habitad con ellas según ciencia, dando honor á la mujer como á vaso más frágil, y como á herederas juntamente de la gracia de la vida; para que vuestras oraciones no sean impedidas.
8Y finalmente, sed todos de un mismo corazón, compasivos, amándoos fraternalmente, misericordiosos, amigables;
9No volviendo mal por mal, ni maldición por maldición, sino antes por el contrario, bendiciendo; sabiendo que vosotros sois llamados para que poseáis bendición en herencia.
10Porque el que quiere amar la vida, y ver días buenos, refrene su lengua de mal, y sus labios no hablen engaño;
11Apártase del mal, y haga bien; busque la paz, y sígala.
12Porque los ojos del Señor están sobre los justos, y sus oídos atentos á sus oraciones: pero el rostro del Señor está sobre aquellos que hacen mal.
13¿Y quién es aquel que os podrá dañar, si vosotros seguís el bien?
14Mas también si alguna cosa padecéis por hacer bien, sois bienaventurados. Por tanto, no temáis por el temor de ellos, ni seáis turbados;
15Sino santificad al Señor Dios en vuestros corazones, y estad siempre aparejados para responder con mansedumbre y reverencia á cada uno que os demande razón de la esperanza que hay en vosotros:
16Teniendo buena conciencia, para que en lo que murmuran de vosotros como de malhechores, sean confundidos los que blasfeman vuestra buena conversación en Cristo.
17Porque mejor es que padezcáis haciendo bien, si la voluntad de Dios así lo quiere, que haciendo mal.
18Porque también Cristo padeció una vez por los pecados, el justo por los injustos, para llevarnos á Dios, siendo á la verdad muerto en la carne, pero vivificado en espíritu;
19En el cual también fué y predicó á los espíritus encarcelados;
20Los cuales en otro tiempo fueron desobedientes, cuando una vez esperaba la paciencia de Dios en los días de Noé, cuando se aparejaba el arca; en la cual pocas, es á saber, ocho personas fueron salvas por agua.
21A la figura de la cual el bautismo que ahora corresponde nos salva (no quitando las inmundicias de la carne, sino como demanda de una buena conciencia delante de Dios,) por la resurrección de Jesucristo:
22El cual está á la diestra de Dios, habiendo subido al cielo; estando á él sujetos los ángeles, y las potestades, y virtudes.

1Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
2While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.
3Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
5For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
7Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
8Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
10For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
11Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
13And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?
14But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
16Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
17For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
21The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

1In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word,
2seeing your pure behavior in fear.
3Let your beauty come not from the outward adorning of braiding your hair, and of wearing gold ornaments or of putting on fine clothing,
4but from the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.
5For this is how in the past the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands.
6So Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are if you do well and are not put in fear by any terror.
7You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
8Finally, all of you be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous,
9not rendering evil for evil or insult for insult; but instead blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.
10For, “He who would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
11Let him turn away from evil and do good. Let him seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
13Now who will harm you if you become imitators of that which is good?
14But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “Don’t fear what they fear, neither be troubled.”
15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,
16having a good conscience. Thus, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ.
17For it is better, if it is God’s will, that you suffer for doing what is right than for doing evil.
18Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit,
19in whom he also went and preached to the spirits in prison,
20who before were disobedient when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.
21This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you—not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.
