HABÍA ya Saúl reinado un año; y reinado que hubo dos años sobre Israel,

seleccionó a tres mil soldados especiales y llevó a dos mil de ellos a Micmás y a la región montañosa de Betel, mientras los otros mil quedaban con Jonatán, su hijo, en Guibeá en la tierra de Benjamín. Envió el resto del ejército a sus casas.
Escogióse luego tres mil de Israel: los dos mil estuvieron con Saúl en Michmas y en el monte de Beth-el, y los mil estuvieron con Jonathán en Gabaa de Benjamín; y envió á todo el otro pueblo cada uno á sus tiendas.
Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Beth-el, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

Entonces Jonatán atacó y destruyó la guarnición filistea que estaba en Guibeá. La noticia corrió rápidamente entre los filisteos, y Saúl convocó a todo Israel a las armas.
Y Jonathán hirió la guarnición de los Filisteos que había en el collado, y oyéronlo los Filisteos. E hizo Saúl tocar trompetas por toda la tierra, diciendo: Oigan los Hebreos.

Anunció que había destruido una guarnición de los filisteos y se corrió la noticia que los israelitas se habían hecho detestables delante de los filisteos. Todo el ejército israelita se movilizó y se reunió en Gilgal.
Y todo Israel oyó que se decía: Saúl ha herido la guarnición de los Filisteos; y también que Israel olía mal á los Filisteos. Y juntóse el pueblo en pos de Saúl en Gilgal.

Los filisteos reclutaron un poderoso ejército de tres mil carros, seis mil jinetes y tantos soldados como arena hay en la playa, y acamparon en Micmás al este de Bet Avén.
Entonces los Filisteos se juntaron para pelear con Israel, treinta mil carros, y seis mil caballos, y pueblo como la arena que está á la orilla de la mar en multitud; y subieron, y asentaron campo en Michmas, al oriente de Beth-aven.

Mas los hombres de Israel, viéndose puestos en estrecho, (porque el pueblo estaba en aprieto), escondióse el pueblo en cuevas, en fosos, en peñascos, en rocas y en cisternas.

Pero cuando estaba terminando llegó Samuel. Saúl salió a encontrarlo y darle la bienvenida,
Y como él acababa de hacer el holocausto, he aquí Samuel que venía; y Saúl le salió á recibir para saludarle.
And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

me dije: “Los filisteos están listos para atacarnos y no hemos pedido la ayuda del Señor”. Entonces ofrecí el holocausto sin esperar tu llegada.
Me dije: Los Filisteos descenderán ahora contra mí á Gilgal, y yo no he implorado el favor de Jehová. Esforcéme pues, y ofrecí holocausto.
Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

―Has actuado locamente —exclamó Samuel—. Has desobedecido el mandamiento del Señor tu Dios. Él quería hacer de ti y de tus descendientes reyes de Israel para siempre,
Entonces Samuel dijo á Saúl: Locamente has hecho; no guardaste el mandamiento de Jehová tu Dios, que él te había intimado; porque ahora Jehová hubiera confirmado tu reino sobre Israel para siempre.
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.
Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you; for now the LORD would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.
pero ahora tu reino no perdurará. El Señor quiere un hombre que le obedezca. Por eso ha buscado a un varón conforme a su corazón y lo ha designado para que sea rey de este pueblo. Y todo porque no has obedecido el mandamiento del Señor.
Mas ahora tu reino no será durable: Jehová se ha buscado varón según su corazón, al cual Jehová ha mandado que sea capitán sobre su pueblo, por cuanto tú no has guardado lo que Jehová te mandó.
But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
But now your kingdom will not continue. The LORD has sought for himself a man after his own heart, and the LORD has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you.”
Sin más, Samuel se fue de Gilgal a Guibeá de Benjamín. Jonatán ataca a los filisteos Cuando Saúl contó los soldados que aún estaban con él, encontró que eran sólo seiscientos.
Y levantándose Samuel, subió de Gilgal á Gabaa de Benjamín. Y Saúl contó la gente que se hallaba con él, como seiscientos hombres.
And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

Tres compañías de merodeo salieron del campamento filisteo: una fue hacia Ofra en la tierra de Súal,
Y salieron del campo de los Filisteos en correría tres escuadrones. El un escuadrón tiró por el camino de Ophra hacia la tierra de Sual.
And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

otra fue a Bet Jorón, y la tercera se dirigió hacia las alturas que dominan el valle de Zeboyín, hacia el desierto.

En aquellos días no había herreros en todo Israel, porque los filisteos no se lo permitían por temor de que los hebreos se hicieran espadas y lanzas.
Y en toda la tierra de Israel no se hallaba herrero; porque los Filisteos habían dicho: Para que los Hebreos no hagan espada ó lanza.
Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

Cuando los israelitas necesitaban afilar los arados, los discos, las hachas o las hoces, tenían que llevarlas a un herrero filisteo.
Y todos los de Israel descendían á los Filisteos cada cual á amolar su reja, su azadón, su hacha, ó su sacho,
But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

Esto era lo que se cobraba: por afilar la punta de un arado, ocho gramos de plata; por los azadones, ocho gramos de plata; por las hachas o las hoces, cuatro gramos de plata; y por componer las aguijadas, cuatro gramos de plata.
Y cuando se hacían bocas en las rejas, ó en los azadones, ó en las horquillas, ó en las hachas; hasta para una ahijada que se hubiera de componer.
Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
The price was one payim each to sharpen mattocks, plowshares, pitchforks, axes, and goads.
En todo el ejército de Israel no había una sola espada ni una lanza, salvo las de Saúl y Jonatán.
Así aconteció que el día de la batalla no se halló espada ni lanza en mano de alguno de todo el pueblo que estaba con Saúl y con Jonathán, excepto Saúl y Jonathán su hijo, que las tenían.
So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

Mientras tanto, el paso hacia Micmás había sido tomado por un contingente del ejército filisteo.
