Elcaná era un hombre de la tribu de Efraín que vivía en Ramatayin de Zofim, en la región montañosa de Efraín. Su padre se llamó Jeroán; su abuelo, Eliú; su bisabuelo, Tohu, y su tatarabuelo, Zuf.
HUBO un varón de Ramathaim de Sophim, del monte de Ephraim, que se llamaba Elcana, hijo de Jeroham, hijo de Eliú, hijo de Thohu, hijo de Suph, Ephrateo.
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:

Tenía dos esposas, Ana y Penina. Penina tenía hijos, pero Ana no.
Y tenía él dos mujeres; el nombre de la una era Anna, y el nombre de la otra Peninna. Y Peninna tenía hijos, mas Anna no los tenía.
And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

Cada año Elcaná y su familia viajaban al santuario en Siló para adorar al Señor Todopoderoso y ofrecerle sacrificios. En aquel tiempo oficiaban como sacerdotes los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finés.
Y subía aquel varón todos los años de su ciudad, á adorar y sacrificar á Jehová de los ejércitos en Silo, donde estaban dos hijos de Eli, Ophni y Phinees, sacerdotes de Jehová.
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

El día que ofrecía sacrificio, Elcaná celebraba la ocasión dando porciones de la carne a Penina y a sus hijos e hijas.
Y cuando venía el día, Elcana sacrificaba, y daba á Peninna su mujer, y á todos sus hijos y á todas sus hijas, á cada uno su parte.
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

A Ana le daba una porción especial, pues la amaba mucho, a pesar de que el Señor no le había concedido tener hijos.
Mas á Anna daba una parte escogida; porque amaba á Anna, aunque Jehová había cerrado su matriz.
But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.
but he gave a double portion to Hannah, for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb.
Penina empeoraba la situación burlándose de Ana a causa de su esterilidad.
Y su competidora la irritaba, enojándola y entristeciéndola, porque Jehová había cerrado su matriz.
And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb.
Todos los años era igual: Penina se burlaba y se reía de ella cuando iban a Siló, y la hacía llorar tanto que Ana no podía comer.
Y así hacía cada año: cuando subía á la casa de Jehová, enojaba así á la otra; por lo cual ella lloraba, y no comía.
And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
So year by year, when she went up to the LORD’s house, her rival provoked her. Therefore she wept, and didn’t eat.
«¿Qué pasa, Ana? —le preguntaba Elcaná—, ¿por qué no comes? ¿Por qué te afliges tanto por no tener hijos? ¿No es mejor tenerme a mí que tener diez hijos?».
Y Elcana su marido le dijo: Anna, ¿por qué lloras? ¿y por qué no comes? ¿y por qué está afligido tu corazón? ¿No te soy yo mejor que diez hijos?
Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”
Una tarde en Siló, después de la cena, Ana fue al santuario. Elí el sacerdote estaba sentado en el lugar acostumbrado junto a la entrada.
Y levantóse Anna después que hubo comido y bebido en Silo; y mientras el sacerdote Eli estaba sentado en una silla junto á un pilar del templo de Jehová,
So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.
So Hannah rose up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of the LORD’s temple.
Ella estaba profundamente angustiada y clamaba con amargura mientras oraba al Señor.

And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

E hizo este voto: «Oh Señor, Dios Todopoderoso, si miras mi dolor y respondes a mi oración dándome un hijo, yo te lo devolveré y será tuyo por toda su vida, y jamás será cortado su cabello».
E hizo voto, diciendo: Jehová de los ejércitos, si te dignares mirar la aflicción de tu sierva, y te acordares de mí, y no te olvidares de tu sierva, mas dieres á tu sierva un hijo varón, yo lo dedicaré á Jehová todos los días de su vida, y no subirá navaja sobre su cabeza.
And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
She vowed a vow, and said, “LORD of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.”
Como Elí vio que Ana prolongaba mucho su oración y que movía los labios sin emitir sonido, pensó que estaba ebria.
Y fué que como ella orase largamente delante de Jehová, Eli estaba observando la boca de ella.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

Mas Anna hablaba en su corazón, y solamente se movían sus labios, y su voz no se oía; y túvola Eli por borracha.
Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

―¿Cómo te atreves a venir aquí borracha? —le dijo—. ¡Deja ya tu borrachera!

And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Get rid of your wine!”
―No, señor —contestó ella—, no estoy ebria; es que estoy muy triste y estaba derramando las penas de mi corazón delante del Señor. No pienses que soy una borracha.
Y Anna le respondió, diciendo: No, señor mío: mas yo soy una mujer trabajada de espíritu: no he bebido vino ni sidra, sino que he derramado mi alma delante de Jehová.
And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

No tengas á tu sierva por una mujer impía: porque por la magnitud de mis congojas y de mi aflicción he hablado hasta ahora.
Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation.”
―En ese caso —dijo Elí—, alégrate, y que el Dios de Israel conceda tu petición, cualquiera que sea.
Y Eli respondió, y dijo: Ve en paz, y el Dios de Israel te otorgue la petición que le has hecho.
Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.”
―¡Oh, gracias, señor! —exclamó ella, y regresó muy alegre y comenzó a comer nuevamente.
Y ella dijo: Halle tu sierva gracia delante de tus ojos. Y fuése la mujer su camino, y comió, y no estuvo más triste.
And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
She said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went her way and ate; and her facial expression wasn’t sad any more.
El día siguiente toda la familia se levantó temprano y fueron al santuario a adorar al Señor una vez más. Entonces regresaron a su hogar en Ramá, y cuando Elcaná durmió con Ana, el Señor se acordó de su petición.
Y levantándose de mañana, adoraron delante de Jehová, y volviéronse, y vinieron á su casa en Ramatha. Y Elcana conoció á Anna su mujer, y Jehová se acordó de ella.
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

Pasado el tiempo, ella tuvo un hijo. Y le puso Samuel (Pedido a Dios) porque, como ella dijo: «Se lo pedí al Señor».
Y fué que corrido el tiempo, después de haber concebido Anna, parió un hijo, y púsole por nombre Samuel, diciendo: Por cuanto lo demandé á Jehová.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of the LORD.”
Al año siguiente, Elcaná y Penina y sus hijos fueron a ofrecer el sacrificio anual al santuario,
Después subió el varón Elcana, con toda su familia, á sacrificar á Jehová el sacrificio acostumbrado, y su voto.
And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

pero Ana no fue esa vez porque le dijo a su marido: ―Espera hasta que el niño haya sido destetado. Entonces yo lo llevaré y lo dejaré allí para siempre.
Mas Anna no subió, sino dijo á su marido: Yo no subiré hasta que el niño sea destetado; para que lo lleve y sea presentado delante de Jehová, y se quede allá para siempre.
But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.
But Hannah didn’t go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and stay there forever.”
―Bien, haz lo que te parezca mejor —contestó Elcaná—. Quédate hasta que destetes al niño, y que el Señor vea el cumplimiento de tu voto. Así que se quedó en casa hasta que destetó al niño.
Y Elcana su marido le respondió: Haz lo que bien te pareciere; quédate hasta que lo destetes: solamente Jehová cumpla su palabra. Y quedóse la mujer, y crió su hijo hasta que lo destetó.
And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.
Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may the LORD establish his word.” So the woman waited and nursed her son until she weaned him.
Entonces, aunque era muy pequeño, lo llevaron al santuario en Siló, juntamente con un becerro de tres años para el sacrificio y veinticuatro kilos de harina y un odre de vino.
Y después que lo hubo destetado, llevólo consigo, con tres becerros, y un epha de harina, y una vasija de vino, y trájolo á la casa de Jehová en Silo: y el niño era pequeño.
And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.

Después del sacrificio llevaron al niño ante la presencia de Elí.

«Señor, ¿te acuerdas de mí? —le preguntó Ana—. Yo soy la mujer que estuvo aquí hace algún tiempo orando al Señor.
Y ella dijo: ¡Oh, señor mío! vive tu alma, señor mío, yo soy aquella mujer que estuvo aquí junto á ti orando á Jehová.
And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.
She said, “Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD.
Le pedí a él que me diera un hijo, y él ha respondido a mi petición.
Por este niño oraba, y Jehová me dió lo que le pedí.
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
I prayed for this child, and the LORD has given me my petition which I asked of him.
Ahora lo traigo para entregarlo al Señor para toda la vida». Y adoraron allí al Señor.
Yo pues le vuelvo también á Jehová: todos los días que viviere, será de Jehová. Y adoró allí á Jehová.
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
Therefore I have also given him to the LORD. As long as he lives he is given to the LORD.” He worshiped the LORD there.
