Y SAMUEL habló á todo Israel. Por aquel tiempo salió Israel á encontrar en batalla á los Filisteos, y asentó campo junto á Eben-ezer, y los Filisteos asentaron el suyo en Aphec.

y presentaron a Israel la batalla. Comenzada ésta, Israel volvió las espaldas a los filisteos; quienes mataron en aquel choque, y dejaron tendidos por los campos, como cuatro mil hombres.

Vuelto el grueso del ejército al campamento, dijeron los ancianos de Israel: ¿Cómo es que el Señor nos ha derrotado hoy delante de los filisteos? Traigamos aquí de Silo el arca de la alianza del Señor, y venga en medio de nosotros, para que nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos.
Y vuelto que hubo el pueblo al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: ¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los Filisteos? Traigamos á nosotros de Silo el arca del pacto de Jehová, para que viniendo entre nosotros nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos.
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

Con esto se atemorizaron los filisteos y dijeron: El Dios de ellos ha venido a sus campamentos. Y añadían gimiendo:

¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de las manos de estos dioses fuertes? Estos son los dioses que hirieron á Egipto con toda plaga en el desierto.
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Pero, ¡ánimo, filisteos!, tened valor, no seáis esclavos de los hebreos como ellos lo han sido de vosotros tantos años. Esforzaos y pelead con denuedo.

Dieron, pues, los filisteos la batalla, y quedó derrotado Israel; y todos los que pudieron huyeron a sus casas. El destrozo de los israelitas fue tan grande, que quedaron muertos treinta mil infantes.

Aquel mismo día, un soldado de la tribu de Benjamín, escapado de la batalla, vino corriendo a Silo, rasgado el vestido y cubierta de polvo la cabeza en señal de dolor.

Habiendo entrado, pues, aquel soldado, publicó luego la noticia por la ciudad, y toda la gente prorrumpió en grandes alaridos.

And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.” He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”
A lo que respondió el hombre que había traído la nueva, diciendo: Huyó Israel delante de los filisteos, y ha sido grande el destrozo del ejército; y además han quedado muertos tus dos hijos Ofni y Finees, y el arca de Dios ha sido robada.
Y el mensajero respondió, y dijo: Israel huyó delante de los Filisteos, y también fué hecha gran mortandad en el pueblo; y también tus dos hijos, Ophni y Phinees, son muertos, y el arca de Dios fué tomada.
And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”
Apenas el hombre hubo nombrado el arca de Dios, cayó Helí de espaldas de la silla junto a la puerta, y quebrándose la cerviz, murió, siendo como era ya hombre anciano. Fue Helí juez de Israel cuarenta años.
Y aconteció que como él hizo mención del arca de Dios, Eli cayó hacia atrás de la silla al lado de la puerta, y quebrósele la cerviz, y murió: porque era hombre viejo y pesado. Y había juzgado á Israel cuarenta años.

Llamó sí al niño, Icabod, diciendo: Se acabó la gloria de Israel (a causa de haber sido robada el arca de Dios y muerto su suegro y su marido).
Y llamó al niño Ichâbod, diciendo: ¡Traspasada es la gloria de Israel! por el arca de Dios que fué tomada, y porque era muerto su suegro, y su marido.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

Y dijo: Se acabó la gloria de Israel; porque el arca de Dios había sido robada.
