―Sí, devolvámoslo con un presente —dijeron todos—. Si quieren devolverlo, deben enviarlo con una ofrenda por la falta a fin de que se detenga la plaga. Si no se detiene sabremos que el Señor no envió la plaga sobre nosotros.
Y ellos dijeron: Si enviáis el arca del Dios de Israel, no la enviéis vacía; mas le pagaréis la expiación: y entonces seréis sanos, y conoceréis por qué no se apartó de vosotros su mano.
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

―¿Y qué expiación enviaremos? —preguntaron. Y les respondieron: ―Envíen figuras de oro de los tumores y de las ratas que están asolando la tierra. Cinco figuras de los tumores y cinco de las ratas por cada uno de ustedes y por los príncipes. Si envían este presente y luego honran al Dios de Israel, quizás él deje de asolarlos a ustedes, a su dios y a su tierra.
Y ellos dijeron: ¿Y qué será la expiación que le pagaremos? Y ellos respondieron: Conforme al número de los príncipes de los Filisteos, cinco hemorroides de oro, y cinco ratones de oro, porque la misma plaga que todos tienen, tienen también vuestros príncipes.
Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

Haréis pues las formas de vuestras hemorroides, y las formas de vuestros ratones que destruyen la tierra, y daréis gloria al Dios de Israel: quizá aliviará su mano de sobre vosotros, y de sobre vuestros dioses, y de sobre vuestra tierra.
Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

Hagan, pues, un carro nuevo y consigan dos vacas que estén criando, vacas que no hayan sido enyugadas antes, y guarden sus becerros en el establo.
Haced pues ahora un carro nuevo, y tomad luego dos vacas que críen, á las cuales no haya sido puesto yugo, y uncid las vacas al carro, y haced tornar de detrás de ellas sus becerros á casa.
Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:

Coloquen el cofre del Señor sobre el carro junto a la caja que contendrá los modelos de oro de las ratas y de los diviesos y luego dejen que las vacas vayan por el camino que quieran.
Tomaréis luego el arca de Jehová, y la pondréis sobre el carro; y poned en una caja al lado de ella las alhajas de oro que le pagáis en expiación: y la dejaréis que se vaya.

Si cruzan la frontera de nuestra tierra y entran en Bet Semes, que es territorio de ellos, sabremos que fue el Señor quien envió este gran mal sobre nosotros; pero si no, si las vacas regresan a buscar a sus becerros, sabremos que la plaga fue simplemente una coincidencia y que no fue enviada por el Señor.
Y mirad: si sube por el camino de su término á Beth-semes, él nos ha hecho este mal tan grande; y si no, seremos ciertos que su mano no nos hirió, nos ha sido accidente.
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

Siguieron las instrucciones: dos vacas nuevas fueron uncidas al carro, y encerraron en el establo sus becerros.
Y aquellos hombres lo hicieron así; pues tomando dos vacas que criaban, unciéronlas al carro, y encerraron en casa sus becerros.

Las vacas tomaron el camino derecho hacia Bet Semes, y mugían mientras avanzaban; las autoridades filisteas las siguieron hasta la frontera misma de Bet Semes.

Los de Bet Semes, que cosechaban el trigo en el valle, cuando vieron el cofre, salieron gozosos a su encuentro.

Estas pues son las hemorroides de oro que pagaron los Filisteos á Jehová en expiación: por Asdod una, por Gaza una, por Ascalón una, por Gath una, por Ecrón una;

Las ratas de oro fueron para aplacar al Señor por las demás ciudades filisteas, fueran ciudades fortificadas o pueblos satélites controlados por las cinco capitales. Como prueba puede verse hasta hoy la gran roca de Bet Semes en el campo de Josué.
Y ratones de oro conforme al número de todas las ciudades de los Filisteos pertenecientes á los cinco príncipes, desde las ciudades fuertes hasta las aldeas sin muro; y hasta la gran piedra sobre la cual pusieron el arca de Jehová, piedra que está en el campo de Josué Beth-semita hasta hoy.

Pero el Señor dio muerte a setenta hombres de Bet Semes porque se atrevieron a mirar dentro del cofre. Y el pueblo hizo duelo a causa de los muchos que el Señor había matado.
Entonces hirió Dios á los de Beth-semes, porque habían mirado en el arca de Jehová; hirió en el pueblo cincuenta mil y setenta hombres. Y el pueblo puso luto, porque Jehová le había herido de tan gran plaga.
And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

«¿Quién puede estar delante del Señor de este Dios Santo? —gritaban—. ¿A dónde podemos enviar el cofre desde aquí?».

And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

Y enviaron mensajeros a los habitantes de Quiriat Yearín y les dijeron que los filisteos habían devuelto el cofre del Señor. «Vengan y llévenselo» —les rogaron.
