Sin embargo, sus hijos no siguieron su camino. Eran corruptos, ganaban dinero aceptando sobornos y pervertían la justicia.
Mas no anduvieron los hijos por los caminos de su padre, antes se ladearon tras la avaricia, recibiendo cohecho y pervirtiendo el derecho.
And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

Así que los ancianos de Israel se reunieron y fueron a buscar a Samuel a Ramá.

“Mira” – le dijeron – “tú ya eres viejo y tus hijos no siguen tus caminos. Elige un rey que nos gobierne como a todas las demás naciones”.
Y dijéronle: He aquí tú has envejecido, y tus hijos no van por tus caminos: por tanto, constitúyenos ahora un rey que nos juzgue, como todas las gentes.

A Samuel le pareció que era una mala idea cuando le dijeron: “Danos un rey que nos gobierne”, así que oró al Señor al respecto.
Y descontentó á Samuel esta palabra que dijeron: Danos rey que nos juzgue. Y Samuel oró á Jehová.

“Haz lo que el pueblo te diga”, le dijo el Señor a Samuel, “porque no es a ti a quien rechazan, sino a mí como su rey.
Y dijo Jehová á Samuel: Oye la voz del pueblo en todo lo que te dijeren: porque no te han desechado á ti, sino á mí me han desechado, para que no reine sobre ellos.
And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Están haciendo lo mismo que siempre han hecho desde que los saqué de Egipto hasta ahora. Me han abandonado y han adorado a otros dioses, y lo mismo están haciendo contigo.
Conforme á todas las obras que han hecho desde el día que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, que me han dejado y han servido á dioses ajenos, así hacen también contigo.
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

Así que haz lo que quieran, pero dales una advertencia solemne: explícales lo que hará un rey cuando los gobierne”.
Ahora pues, oye su voz: mas protesta contra ellos declarándoles el derecho del rey que ha de reinar sobre ellos.

Samuel repitió delante de todo el pueblo todo lo que el Señor le había dicho en cuanto al pueblo pidiéndole que les diera un rey.
Y dijo Samuel todas las palabras de Jehová al pueblo que le había pedido rey.
And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

Entonces les dijo: “Esto es lo que hará un rey cuando gobierne sobre Israel: Tomará a sus hijos y los hará servir como soldados y jinetes, y para que corran como guardia delante de sus propios carruajes.
Dijo pues: Este será el derecho del rey que hubiere de reinar sobre vosotros: tomará vuestros hijos, y pondrálos en sus carros, y en su gente de á caballo, para que corran delante de su carro:
And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.
A algunos de los asignará como comandantes de millares y comandantes de cincuentenas, y otros tendrán que arar sus campos y segar su cosecha. A algunos los destinará a fabricar armas y equipos para los carros de guerra.
Y se elegirá capitanes de mil, y capitanes de cincuenta: pondrálos asimismo á que aren sus campos, y sieguen sus mieses, y á que hagan sus armas de guerra, y los pertrechos de sus carros:
And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

Tomará a las hijas de ustedes y las hará trabajar como perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas.

Pero el pueblo se negó a escuchar lo que Samuel decía. “¡No!”, insistieron. “¡Queremos nuestro propio rey!
Empero el pueblo no quiso oir la voz de Samuel; antes dijeron: No, sino que habrá rey sobre nosotros:
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

Así podremos ser como las demás naciones. Nuestro rey nos gobernará y nos guiará cuando salgamos a pelear nuestras batallas”.
Y nosotros seremos también como todas las gentes, y nuestro rey nos gobernará, y saldrá delante de nosotros, y hará nuestras guerras.

Samuel escuchó todo lo que el pueblo decía y se lo repitió al Señor.

Entonces el Señor le dijo a Samuel: “Haz lo que ellos te piden y dales un rey”. Entonces Samuel les dijo a los israelitas: “Vuelvan a sus casas”.
Y Jehová dijo á Samuel: Oye su voz, y pon rey sobre ellos. Entonces dijo Samuel á los varones de Israel: Idos cada uno á su ciudad.
