1Or v’era un uomo di Beniamino, per nome Kis, figliuolo d’Abiel, figliuolo di Tseror, figliuolo di Becorath, figliuolo d’Afiac, figliuolo d’un Beniaminita. Era un uomo forte e valoroso;
2aveva un figliuolo per nome Saul, giovine e bello; non ve n’era tra i figliuoli d’Israele uno più bello di lui: era più alto di tutta la gente dalle spalle in su.
3Or le asine di Kis, padre di Saul, s’erano smarrite; e Kis disse a Saul, suo figliuolo: “Prendi teco uno dei servi, lèvati e va’ in cerca delle asine”.
4Egli passò per la contrada montuosa di Efraim e attraversò il paese di Shalisha, senza trovarle; poi passarono per il paese di Shaalim, ma non vi erano; attraversarono il paese dei Beniaminiti, ma non le trovarono.
5Quando furon giunti nel paese di Tsuf, Saul disse al servo che era con lui: “Vieni, torniamocene, ché altrimenti mio padre cesserebbe dal pensare alle asine e sarebbe in pena per noi”.
6Il servo gli disse: “Ecco, v’è in questa città un uomo di Dio, ch’è tenuto in grande onore; tutto quello ch’egli dice, succede sicuramente; andiamoci; forse egli c’indicherà la via che dobbiamo seguire”.
7E Saul disse al suo servo: “Ma, ecco, se v’andiamo, che porteremo noi all’uomo di Dio? Poiché non ci son più provvisioni nei nostri sacchi, e non abbiamo alcun presente da offrire all’uomo di Dio. Che abbiamo con noi?”
8Il servo replicò a Saul, dicendo: “Ecco, io mi trovo in possesso del quarto d’un siclo d’argento; lo darò all’uomo di Dio, ed egli c’indicherà la via.
9(Anticamente, in Israele, quand’uno andava a consultare Iddio, diceva: “Venite, andiamo dal Veggente!” poiché colui che oggi si chiama Profeta, anticamente si chiamava Veggente).
10E Saul disse al suo servo: “Dici bene; vieni, andiamo”. E andarono alla città dove stava l’uomo di Dio.
11Mentre facevano la salita che mena alla città, trovarono delle fanciulle che uscivano ad attingere acqua, e chiesero loro: “E’ qui il veggente?”
12Quelle risposer loro, dicendo: “Sì, c’è; è là dove sei diretto; ma va’ presto, giacché è venuto oggi in città, perché oggi il popolo fa un sacrifizio sull’alto luogo.
13Quando sarete entrati in città, lo troverete di certo, prima ch’egli salga all’alto luogo a mangiare. Il popolo non mangerà prima ch’egli sia giunto, perché è lui che deve benedire il sacrifizio; dopo di che, i convitati mangeranno. Or dunque salite, perché proprio ora lo troverete”.
14Ed essi salirono alla città; e, come vi furono entrati, ecco Samuele che usciva loro incontro per salire all’alto luogo.
15Or un giorno prima dell’arrivo di Saul, l’Eterno aveva avvertito Samuele, dicendo:
16“Domani, a quest’ora, ti manderò un uomo del paese di Beniamino, e tu l’ungerai come capo del mio popolo d’Israele. Egli salverà il mio popolo dalle mani dei Filistei; poiché io ho rivolto lo sguardo verso il mio popolo, perché il suo grido è giunto fino a me”.
17E quando Samuele vide Saul, l’Eterno gli disse: “Ecco l’uomo di cui t’ho parlato; egli è colui che signoreggerà sul mio popolo”.
18Saul s’avvicinò a Samuele entro la porta della città, e gli disse: “Indicami, ti prego, dove sia la casa del veggente”.
19E Samuele rispose a Saul: “Sono io il veggente. Sali davanti a me all’alto luogo, e mangerete oggi con me; poi domattina ti lascerò partire, e ti dirò tutto quello che hai nel cuore.
20E quanto alle asine smarrite tre giorni fa, non dartene pensiero, perché son trovate. E per chi è tutto quello che v’è di desiderabile in Israele? Non è esso per te e per tutta la casa di tuo padre?”
21Saul, rispondendo, disse: “Non son io un Beniaminita? di una delle più piccole tribù d’Israele? La mia famiglia non è essa la più piccola fra tutte le famiglie della tribù di Beniamino? Perché dunque mi parli a questo modo?”
22Samuele prese Saul e il suo servo, li introdusse nella sala e li fe’ sedere in capo di tavola fra i convitati, ch’eran circa trenta persone.
23E Samuele disse al cuoco: “Porta qua la porzione che t’ho data, e della quale t’ho detto: Tienla in serbo presso di te”.
24Il cuoco allora prese la coscia e ciò che v’aderiva, e la mise davanti a Saul. E Samuele disse: “Ecco ciò ch’è stato tenuto in serbo; mettitelo dinanzi e mangia, poiché è stato serbato apposta per te quand’ho invitato il popolo”. Così Saul, quel giorno, mangiò con Samuele.
25Poi scesero dall’alto luogo in città, e Samuele s’intrattenne con Saul sul terrazzo.
26L’indomani si alzarono presto; allo spuntar dell’alba, Samuele chiamò Saul sul terrazzo, e gli disse: “Vieni, ch’io ti lasci partire”. Saul s’alzò, e uscirono fuori ambedue, egli e Samuele.
27Quando furon discesi all’estremità della città, Samuele disse a Saul: “Di’ al servo che passi, e vada innanzi a noi (e il servo passò); ma tu adesso fermati, ed io ti farò udire la parola di Dio”.

1Y HABÍA un varón de Benjamín, hombre valeroso, el cual se llamaba Cis, hijo de Abiel, hijo de Seor, hijo de Bechôra, hijo de Aphia, hijo de un hombre de Benjamín.
2Y tenía él un hijo que se llamaba Saúl, mancebo y hermoso, que entre los hijos de Israel no había otro más hermoso que él; del hombro arriba sobrepujaba á cualquiera del pueblo.
3Y habíanse perdido las asnas de Cis, padre de Saúl; por lo que dijo Cis á Saúl su hijo: Toma ahora contigo alguno de los criados, y levántate, y ve á buscar las asnas.
4Y él pasó al monte de Ephraim, y de allí á la tierra de Salisa, y no las hallaron. Pasaron luego por la tierra de Saalim, y tampoco. Después pasaron por la tierra de Benjamín, y no las encontraron.
5Y cuando vinieron á la tierra de Suph, Saúl dijo á su criado que tenía consigo: Ven, volvámonos; porque quizá mi padre, dejado el cuidado de las asnas, estará congojado por nosotros.
6Y él le respondió: He aquí ahora hay en esta ciudad un hombre de Dios, que es varón insigne: todas las cosas que él dijere, sin duda vendrán. Vamos pues allá: quizá nos enseñará nuestro camino por donde hayamos de ir.
7Y Saúl respondió á su criado: Vamos ahora: ¿mas qué llevaremos al varón? Porque el pan de nuestras alforjas se ha acabado, y no tenemos qué presentar al varón de Dios: ¿qué tenemos?
8Entonces tornó el criado á responder á Saúl, diciendo: He aquí se halla en mi mano la cuarta parte de un siclo de plata: esto daré al varón de Dios, porque nos declare nuestro camino.
9(Antiguamente en Israel cualquiera que iba á consultar á Dios, decía así: Venid y vamos hasta el vidente: porque el que ahora se llama profeta, antiguamente era llamado vidente).
10Dijo entonces Saúl á su criado: Bien dices; ea pues, vamos. Y fueron á la ciudad donde estaba el varón de Dios.
11Y cuando subían por la cuesta de la ciudad, hallaron unas mozas que salían por agua, á las cuales dijeron: ¿Está en este lugar el vidente?
12Y ellas respondiéndoles, dijeron: Sí; helo aquí delante de ti: date pues priesa, porque hoy ha venido á la ciudad en atención á que el pueblo tiene hoy sacrificio en el alto.
13Y cuando entrareis en la ciudad, le encontraréis luego, antes que suba al alto á comer; pues el pueblo no comerá hasta que él haya venido, por cuanto él haya de bendecir el sacrificio, y después comerán los convidados. Subid pues ahora, porque ahora le hallaréis.
14Ellos entonces subieron á la ciudad; y cuando en medio de la ciudad estuvieron, he aquí Samuel que delante de ellos salía para subir al alto.
15Y un día antes que Saúl viniese, Jehová había revelado al oído de Samuel, diciendo:
16Mañana á esta misma hora yo enviaré á ti un varón de la tierra de Benjamín, al cual ungirás por príncipe sobre mi pueblo Israel, y salvará mi pueblo de mano de los Filisteos: pues yo he mirado á mi pueblo, porque su clamor ha llegado hasta mí.
17Y luego que Samuel vió á Saúl, Jehová le dijo: He aquí éste es el varón del cual te hablé; éste señoreará á mi pueblo.
18Y llegando Saúl á Samuel en medio de la puerta, díjole: Ruégote que me enseñes dónde está la casa del vidente.
19Y Samuel respondió á Saúl, y dijo: Yo soy el vidente: sube delante de mí al alto, y comed hoy conmigo, y por la mañana te despacharé, y te descubriré todo lo que está en tu corazón.
20Y de las asnas que se te perdieron hoy ha tres días, pierde cuidado de ellas, porque se han hallado. Mas ¿por quién es todo el deseo de Israel, sino por ti y por toda la casa de tu padre?
21Y Saúl respondió, y dijo: ¿No soy yo hijo de Benjamín, de las más pequeñas tribus de Israel? Y mi familia ¿no es la más pequeña de todas las familias de la tribu de Benjamín? ¿por qué pues me has dicho cosa semejante?
22Y trabando Samuel de Saúl y de su criado, metiólos en la sala, y dióles lugar á la cabecera de los convidados, que eran como unos treinta hombres.
23Y dijo Samuel al cocinero: Trae acá la porción que te dí, la cual te dije que guardases aparte.
24Entonces alzó el cocinero una espaldilla, con lo que estaba sobre ella, y púsola delante de Saúl. Y Samuel dijo: He aquí lo que estaba reservado: ponlo delante de ti, y come; porque de industria se guardó para ti, cuando dije: Yo he convidado al pueblo. Y Saúl comió aquel día con Samuel.
25Y cuando hubieron descendido del alto á la ciudad, él habló con Saúl en el terrado.
26Y al otro día madrugaron: y como al apuntar del alba, Samuel llamó á Saúl, que estaba en el terrado; y dijo: Levántate, para que te despache. Levantóse luego Saúl, y salieron fuera ambos, él y Samuel.
27Y descendiendo ellos al cabo de la ciudad, dijo Samuel á Saúl: Di al mozo que vaya delante, (y adelantóse el mozo); mas espera tú un poco para que te declare palabra de Dios.

1Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.
2And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
3And the asses of Kish Saul’s father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.
4And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
5And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.
6And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.
7Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
8And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
9(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
10Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
11And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?
12And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
13As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
14And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
15Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
16To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
17And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
18Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer’s house is.
19And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
20And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
21And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
22And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.
23And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.
24And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
25And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
26And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
27And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.
World English Bible
1Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.
2He had a son whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a more handsome person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was taller than any of the people.
3The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Now take one of the servants with you, and arise, go look for the donkeys.”
4He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and they weren’t there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them.
5When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come! Let’s return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys and be anxious for us.”
6The servant said to him, “Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says surely happens. Now let’s go there. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”
7Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”
8The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”
9(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come! Let’s go to the seer;” for he who is now called a prophet was before called a seer.)
10Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come! Let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.
11As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”
12They answered them and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.
13As soon as you have come into the city, you will immediately find him before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he comes, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you will find him.”
14They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them to go up to the high place.
15Now the LORD had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,
16“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”
17When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He will have authority over my people.”
18Then Saul approached Samuel in the gateway, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.”
19Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you are to eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart.
20As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them, for they have been found. For whom does all Israel desire? Is it not you and all your father’s house?”
21Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?”
22Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.
23Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’”
24The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because it has been kept for you for the appointed time, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
25When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop.
26They arose early; and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they both went outside, he and Samuel, together.
27As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” He went ahead, then Samuel said, “But stand still first, that I may cause you to hear God’s message.”
