1Palabra fiel es esta: Si alguno aspira al cargo de obispo, buena obra desea.
2Por lo tanto, el obispo debe ser intachable, esposo de una sola mujer, sobrio, prudente, respetable, hospitalario, apto para enseñar;
3no dado a la embriaguez, no violento, no codicioso de ganancias deshonestas, sino amable, pacífico, no avaro;
4que gobierne bien su propia casa, que tenga a sus hijos en sujeción con toda dignidad
5(pues el que no sabe gobernar su propia casa, ¿cómo cuidará de la iglesia de Dios?);
6no debe ser un recién convertido, no sea que se llene de orgullo y caiga en la misma condenación que el diablo.
7También debe tener un buen testimonio de los de afuera, para que no caiga en descrédito y en la trampa del diablo.
8De la misma manera, los diáconos deben ser respetables, sin doblez de palabra, no dados a tomar mucho vino, ni codiciosos de ganancias deshonestas;
9que guarden el misterio de la fe con una conciencia limpia.
10Y que estos también sean sometidos a prueba primero, y si son intachables, entonces que sirvan como diáconos.
11Las mujeres, de igual manera, deben ser respetables, no calumniadoras, sino sobrias y fieles en todo.
12Que los diáconos sean esposos de una sola mujer, y que gobiernen bien a sus hijos y sus propias casas.
13Porque los que sirven bien como diáconos, ganan para sí un lugar de honor y mucha confianza en la fe que es en Cristo Jesús.
14Te escribo estas cosas, esperando ir a verte pronto,
15para que si me demoro, sepas cómo debes portarte en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios viviente, columna y fundamento de la verdad.
16Indiscutiblemente, grande es el misterio de la piedad: Dios fue manifestado en carne, justificado en el Espíritu, visto por los ángeles, predicado a las naciones, creído en el mundo, recibido arriba en la gloria.

2Conviene, pues, que el obispo sea irreprensible, marido de una mujer, solícito, templado, compuesto, hospedador, apto para enseñar;
3No amador del vino, no heridor, no codicioso de torpes ganancias, sino moderado, no litigioso, ajeno de avaricia;
4Que gobierne bien su casa, que tenga sus hijos en sujeción con toda honestidad;
5(Porque el que no sabe gobernar su casa, ¿cómo cuidará de la iglesia de Dios?)
6No un neófito, porque inflándose no caiga en juicio del diablo.
7También conviene que tenga buen testimonio de los extraños, porque no caiga en afrenta y en lazo del diablo.
8Los diáconos asimismo, deben ser honestos, no bilingües, no dados á mucho vino, no amadores de torpes ganancias;
9Que tengan el misterio de la fe con limpia conciencia.
10Y éstos también sean antes probados; y así ministren, si fueren sin crimen.
11Las mujeres asimismo, honestas, no detractoras, templadas, fieles en todo.
12Los diáconos sean maridos de una mujer, que gobiernen bien sus hijos y sus casas.
13Porque los que bien ministraren, ganan para sí buen grado, y mucha confianza en la fe que es en Cristo Jesús.
14Esto te escribo con esperanza que iré presto á ti:
15Y si no fuere tan presto, para que sepas cómo te conviene conversar en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios vivo, columna y apoyo de la verdad.
16Y sin contradicción, grande es el misterio de la piedad: Dios ha sido manifestado en carne; ha sido justificado con el Espíritu; ha sido visto de los ángeles; ha sido predicado á los Gentiles; ha sido creído en el mundo; ha sido recibido en gloria.

1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
9Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
11Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
12Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1This is a faithful saying: someone who seeks to be an overseer desires a good work.
2The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching;
3not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
4one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence;
5(for how could someone who doesn’t know how to rule his own house take care of God’s assembly?)
6not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.
7Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money,
9holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless.
11Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, and faithful in all things.
12Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
