1Cette parole est certaine: Si quelqu’un aspire à la charge d’évêque, il désire une œuvre excellente.
2Il faut donc que l’évêque soit irréprochable, mari d’une seule femme, sobre, modéré, réglé dans sa conduite, hospitalier, propre à l’enseignement.
3Il faut qu’il ne soit ni adonné au vin, ni violent, mais indulgent, pacifique, désintéressé.
4Il faut qu’il dirige bien sa propre maison, et qu’il tienne ses enfants dans la soumission et dans une parfaite honnêteté;
5car si quelqu’un ne sait pas diriger sa propre maison, comment prendra-t-il soin de l’Église de Dieu?
6Il ne faut pas qu’il soit un nouveau converti, de peur qu’enflé d’orgueil il ne tombe sous le jugement du diable.
7Il faut aussi qu’il reçoive un bon témoignage de ceux du dehors, afin de ne pas tomber dans l’opprobre et dans les pièges du diable.
8Les diacres aussi doivent être honnêtes, éloignés de la duplicité, des excès du vin, d’un gain sordide,
9conservant le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure.
10Qu’on les éprouve d’abord, et qu’ils exercent ensuite leur ministère, s’ils sont sans reproche.
11Les femmes, de même, doivent être honnêtes, non médisantes, sobres, fidèles en toutes choses.
12Les diacres doivent être maris d’une seule femme, et diriger bien leurs enfants et leurs propres maisons;
13car ceux qui remplissent convenablement leur ministère s’acquièrent un rang honorable, et une grande assurance dans la foi en Jésus-Christ.
14Je t’écris ces choses, avec l’espérance d’aller bientôt vers toi,
15mais afin que tu saches, si je tarde, comment il faut se conduire dans la maison de Dieu, qui est l’Église du Dieu vivant, la colonne et l’appui de la vérité.
16Et, sans contredit, le mystère de la piété est grand: celui qui a été manifesté en chair, justifié par l’Esprit, vu des anges, prêché aux Gentils, cru dans le monde, élevé dans la gloire.

1PALABRA fiel: Si alguno apetece obispado, buena obra desea.
2Conviene, pues, que el obispo sea irreprensible, marido de una mujer, solícito, templado, compuesto, hospedador, apto para enseñar;
3No amador del vino, no heridor, no codicioso de torpes ganancias, sino moderado, no litigioso, ajeno de avaricia;
4Que gobierne bien su casa, que tenga sus hijos en sujeción con toda honestidad;
5(Porque el que no sabe gobernar su casa, ¿cómo cuidará de la iglesia de Dios?)
6No un neófito, porque inflándose no caiga en juicio del diablo.
7También conviene que tenga buen testimonio de los extraños, porque no caiga en afrenta y en lazo del diablo.
8Los diáconos asimismo, deben ser honestos, no bilingües, no dados á mucho vino, no amadores de torpes ganancias;
9Que tengan el misterio de la fe con limpia conciencia.
10Y éstos también sean antes probados; y así ministren, si fueren sin crimen.
11Las mujeres asimismo, honestas, no detractoras, templadas, fieles en todo.
12Los diáconos sean maridos de una mujer, que gobiernen bien sus hijos y sus casas.
13Porque los que bien ministraren, ganan para sí buen grado, y mucha confianza en la fe que es en Cristo Jesús.
14Esto te escribo con esperanza que iré presto á ti:
15Y si no fuere tan presto, para que sepas cómo te conviene conversar en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios vivo, columna y apoyo de la verdad.
16Y sin contradicción, grande es el misterio de la piedad: Dios ha sido manifestado en carne; ha sido justificado con el Espíritu; ha sido visto de los ángeles; ha sido predicado á los Gentiles; ha sido creído en el mundo; ha sido recibido en gloria.

1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
9Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
11Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
12Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1This is a faithful saying: someone who seeks to be an overseer desires a good work.
2The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching;
3not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
4one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence;
5(for how could someone who doesn’t know how to rule his own house take care of God’s assembly?)
6not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.
7Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money,
9holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless.
11Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, and faithful in all things.
12Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
