1Das ist gewißlich wahr: So jemand ein Bischofsamt begehrt, der begehrt ein köstlich Werk.
2Es soll aber ein Bischof unsträflich sein, eines Weibes Mann, nüchtern, mäßig, sittig, gastfrei, lehrhaft,
3nicht ein Weinsäufer, nicht raufen, nicht unehrliche Hantierung treiben, sondern gelinde, nicht zänkisch, nicht geizig,
4der seinem eigenen Hause wohl vorstehe, der gehorsame Kinder habe mit aller Ehrbarkeit,
5(so aber jemand seinem eigenen Hause nicht weiß vorzustehen, wie wird er die Gemeinde Gottes versorgen?);
6Nicht ein Neuling, auf daß er sich nicht aufblase und ins Urteil des Lästerers falle.
7Er muß aber auch ein gutes Zeugnis haben von denen, die draußen sind, auf daß er nicht falle dem Lästerer in Schmach und Strick.
8Desgleichen die Diener sollen ehrbar sein, nicht zweizüngig, nicht Weinsäufer, nicht unehrliche Hantierungen treiben;
9die das Geheimnis des Glaubens in reinem Gewissen haben.
10Und diese lasse man zuvor versuchen; darnach lasse man sie dienen, wenn sie unsträflich sind.
11Desgleichen ihre Weiber sollen ehrbar sein, nicht Lästerinnen, nüchtern, treu in allen Dingen.
12Die Diener laß einen jeglichen sein eines Weibes Mann, die ihren Kindern wohl vorstehen und ihren eigenen Häusern.
13Welche aber wohl dienen, die erwerben sich selbst eine gute Stufe und eine große Freudigkeit im Glauben an Christum Jesum.
14Solches schreibe ich dir und hoffe, bald zu dir zu kommen;
15so ich aber verzöge, daß du wissest, wie du wandeln sollst in dem Hause Gottes, welches ist die Gemeinde des lebendigen Gottes, ein Pfeiler und eine Grundfeste der Wahrheit.
16Und kündlich groß ist das gottselige Geheimnis: Gott ist offenbart im Fleisch, gerechtfertigt im Geist, erschienen den Engeln, gepredigt den Heiden, geglaubt von der Welt, aufgenommen in die Herrlichkeit.

1PALABRA fiel: Si alguno apetece obispado, buena obra desea.
2Conviene, pues, que el obispo sea irreprensible, marido de una mujer, solícito, templado, compuesto, hospedador, apto para enseñar;
3No amador del vino, no heridor, no codicioso de torpes ganancias, sino moderado, no litigioso, ajeno de avaricia;
4Que gobierne bien su casa, que tenga sus hijos en sujeción con toda honestidad;
5(Porque el que no sabe gobernar su casa, ¿cómo cuidará de la iglesia de Dios?)
6No un neófito, porque inflándose no caiga en juicio del diablo.
7También conviene que tenga buen testimonio de los extraños, porque no caiga en afrenta y en lazo del diablo.
8Los diáconos asimismo, deben ser honestos, no bilingües, no dados á mucho vino, no amadores de torpes ganancias;
9Que tengan el misterio de la fe con limpia conciencia.
10Y éstos también sean antes probados; y así ministren, si fueren sin crimen.
11Las mujeres asimismo, honestas, no detractoras, templadas, fieles en todo.
12Los diáconos sean maridos de una mujer, que gobiernen bien sus hijos y sus casas.
13Porque los que bien ministraren, ganan para sí buen grado, y mucha confianza en la fe que es en Cristo Jesús.
14Esto te escribo con esperanza que iré presto á ti:
15Y si no fuere tan presto, para que sepas cómo te conviene conversar en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios vivo, columna y apoyo de la verdad.
16Y sin contradicción, grande es el misterio de la piedad: Dios ha sido manifestado en carne; ha sido justificado con el Espíritu; ha sido visto de los ángeles; ha sido predicado á los Gentiles; ha sido creído en el mundo; ha sido recibido en gloria.

1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
9Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
11Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
12Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

1This is a faithful saying: someone who seeks to be an overseer desires a good work.
2The overseer therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, modest, hospitable, good at teaching;
3not a drinker, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;
4one who rules his own house well, having children in subjection with all reverence;
5(for how could someone who doesn’t know how to rule his own house take care of God’s assembly?)
6not a new convert, lest being puffed up he fall into the same condemnation as the devil.
7Moreover he must have good testimony from those who are outside, to avoid falling into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8Servants, in the same way, must be reverent, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for money,
9holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10Let them also first be tested; then let them serve if they are blameless.
11Their wives in the same way must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, and faithful in all things.
12Let servants be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13For those who have served well gain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly,
15but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God’s house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16Without controversy, the mystery of godliness is great: God was revealed in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, and received up in glory.
