1Ne réprimande pas rudement le vieillard, mais exhorte-le comme un père; exhorte les jeunes gens comme des frères,
2les femmes âgées comme des mères, celles qui sont jeunes comme des sœurs, en toute pureté.
3Honore les veuves qui sont véritablement veuves.
4Si une veuve a des enfants ou des petits-enfants, qu’ils apprennent avant tout à exercer la piété envers leur propre famille, et à rendre à leurs parents ce qu’ils ont reçu d’eux; car cela est agréable à Dieu.
5Celle qui est véritablement veuve, et qui est demeurée dans l’isolement, met son espérance en Dieu et persévère nuit et jour dans les supplications et les prières.
6Mais celle qui vit dans les plaisirs est morte, quoique vivante.
7Déclare-leur ces choses, afin qu’elles soient irréprochables.
8Si quelqu’un n’a pas soin des siens, et principalement de ceux de sa famille, il a renié la foi, et il est pire qu’un infidèle.
9Qu’une veuve, pour être inscrite sur le rôle, n’ait pas moins de soixante ans, qu’elle ait été femme d’un seul mari,
10qu’elle soit recommandable par de bonnes œuvres, ayant élevé des enfants, exercé l’hospitalité, lavé les pieds des saints, secouru les malheureux, pratiqué toute espèce de bonne œuvre.
11Mais refuse les jeunes veuves; car, lorsque la volupté les détache du Christ, elles veulent se marier,
12et se rendent coupables en ce qu’elles violent leur premier engagement.
13Avec cela, étant oisives, elles apprennent à aller de maison en maison; et non seulement elles sont oisives, mais encore causeuses et intrigantes, disant ce qu’il ne faut pas dire.
14Je veux donc que les jeunes se marient, qu’elles aient des enfants, qu’elles dirigent leur maison, qu’elles ne donnent à l’adversaire aucune occasion de médire;
15car déjà quelques-unes se sont détournées pour suivre Satan.
16Si quelque fidèle, homme ou femme, a des veuves, qu’il les assiste, et que l’Église n’en soit point chargée, afin qu’elle puisse assister celles qui sont véritablement veuves.
17Que les anciens qui dirigent bien soient jugés dignes d’un double honneur, surtout ceux qui travaillent à la prédication et à l’enseignement.
18Car l’Écriture dit: Tu n’emmuselleras point le bœuf quand il foule le grain. Et l’ouvrier mérite son salaire.
19Ne reçois point d’accusation contre un ancien, si ce n’est sur la déposition de deux ou trois témoins.
20Ceux qui pèchent, reprends-les devant tous, afin que les autres aussi éprouvent de la crainte.
21Je te conjure devant Dieu, devant Jésus-Christ, et devant les anges élus, d’observer ces choses sans prévention, et de ne rien faire par faveur.
22N’impose les mains à personne avec précipitation, et ne participe pas aux péchés d’autrui; toi-même, conserve-toi pur.
23Ne continue pas à ne boire que de l’eau; mais fais usage d’un peu de vin, à cause de ton estomac et de tes fréquentes indispositions.
24Les péchés de certains hommes sont manifestes, même avant qu’on les juge, tandis que chez d’autres, ils ne se découvrent que dans la suite.
25De même, les bonnes œuvres sont manifestes, et celles qui ne le sont pas ne peuvent rester cachées.

1NO reprendas al anciano, sino exhórtale como á padre: á los más jóvenes, como á hermanos;
2A las ancianas, como á madres; á las jovencitas, como á hermanas, con toda pureza.
3Honra á las viudas que en verdad son viudas.
4Pero si alguna viuda tuviere hijos, ó nietos, aprendan primero á gobernar su casa piadosamente, y á recompensar á sus padres: porque esto es lo honesto y agradable delante de Dios.
5Ahora, la que en verdad es viuda y solitaria, espera en Dios, y es diligente en suplicaciones y oraciones noche y día.
6Pero la que vive en delicias, viviendo está muerta.
7Denuncia pues estas cosas, para que sean sin reprensión.
8Y si alguno no tiene cuidado de los suyos, y mayormente de los de su casa, la fe negó, y es peor que un infiel.
9La viuda sea puesta en clase especial, no menos que de sesenta años, que haya sido esposa de un solo marido.
10Que tenga testimonio en buenas obras; si crió hijos; si ha ejercitado la hospitalidad; si ha lavado los pies de los santos; si ha socorrido á los afligidos; si ha seguido toda buena obra.
11Pero viudas más jóvenes no admitas: porque después de hacerse licenciosas contra Cristo, quieren casarse.
12Condenadas ya, por haber falseado la primera fe.
13Y aun también se acostumbran á ser ociosas, á andar de casa en casa; y no solamente ociosas, sino también parleras y curiosas, hablando lo que no conviene.
14Quiero pues, que las que son jóvenes se casen, críen hijos, gobiernen la casa; que ninguna ocasión den al adversario para maldecir.
15Porque ya algunas han vuelto atrás en pos de Satanás.
16Si algún fiel ó alguna fiel tiene viudas, manténgalas, y no sea gravada la iglesia; á fin de que haya lo suficiente para las que de verdad son viudas.
17Los ancianos que gobiernan bien, sean tenidos por dignos de doblada honra; mayormente los que trabajan en predicar y enseñar.
18Porque la Escritura dice: No embozarás al buey que trilla; y: Digno es el obrero de su jornal.
19Contra el anciano no recibas acusación sino con dos ó tres testigos.
20A los que pecaren, repréndelos delante de todos, para que los otros también teman.
21Te requiero delante de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, y de sus ángeles escogidos, que guardes estas cosas sin perjuicio de nadie, que nada hagas inclinándote á la una parte.
22No impongas de ligero las manos á ninguno, ni comuniques en pecados ajenos: consérvate en limpieza.
23No bebas de aquí adelante agua, sino usa de un poco de vino por causa del estómago, y de tus continuas enfermedades.
24Los pecados de algunos hombres, antes que vengan ellos á juicio, son manifiestos; mas á otros les vienen después.
25Asimismo las buenas obras antes son manifiestas; y las que son de otra manera, no pueden esconderse.

1Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
2The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
3Honour widows that are widows indeed.
4But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
5Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
6But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
7And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.
8But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
9Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,
10Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.
11But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;
12Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
13And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.
14I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
15For some are already turned aside after Satan.
16If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.
17Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
18For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
19Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
20Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.
21I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.
22Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.
23Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.
24Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after.
25Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise can not be hid.
