1Joás tenía siete años cuando llegó a ser rey, y reinó en Jerusalén durante cuarenta años. Su madre se llamaba Sibia de Beerseba.
2Joás hizo lo que era correcto a los ojos del Señor durante la vida del sacerdote Joiada.
3Joiada hizo que se casara con dos mujeres, y tuvo hijos e hijas.
4Tiempo después, Joás decidió reparar el Templo del Señor.
5Convocó a los sacerdotes y a los levitas y les dijo: “Vayan a las ciudades de Judá y recojan las cuotas anuales de todos en Israel para reparar el Templo de su Dios. Háganlo de inmediato”. Pero los levitas no fueron de inmediato.
6Entonces el rey llamó al sumo sacerdote Joiada y le preguntó: “¿Por qué no has ordenado a los levitas que recauden de Judá y Jerusalén el impuesto que Moisés, siervo del Señor, y la asamblea de Israel impusieron para mantener la Tienda de la Ley?”
7(Los partidarios de esa malvada mujer, Atalía, habían irrumpido en el Templo de Dios y habían robado los objetos sagrados del Templo del Señor y los habían utilizado para adorar a los baales).
8El rey ordenó que se hiciera un cofre para la colecta y que se colocara frente a la entrada del Templo del Señor.
9Se proclamó un decreto en toda Judea y Jerusalén para traer al Señor el impuesto que Moisés, el siervo del Señor, impuso a Israel en el desierto.
10Todos los dirigentes y todo el pueblo se alegraron de hacerlo y trajeron sus impuestos. Los echaron en el cofre hasta que estuvo lleno.
11De vez en cuando los levitas llevaban el cofre a los funcionarios del rey. Cuando veían que contenía una gran cantidad de dinero, el secretario del rey y el oficial principal del sumo sacerdote venían y vaciaban el cofre. Luego lo llevaban de vuelta a su lugar. Lo hacían todos los días y recogían una gran cantidad de dinero.
12Luego el rey y Joiada destinaban el dinero de los que supervisaban las obras del Templo del Señor a contratar canteros y carpinteros para restaurar el Templo del Señor y artesanos del hierro y del bronce para reparar el Templo del Señor.
13Los hombres que hacían las reparaciones trabajaron duro y avanzaron mucho. Restauraron el Templo de Dios a su condición original y lo fortalecieron.
14Cuando terminaron, devolvieron el dinero que quedaba al rey y a Joiada, y con él se hicieron utensilios para el Templo del Señor, tanto para los servicios de adoración como para los holocaustos, también copas para el incienso y recipientes de oro y plata. Los holocaustos se ofrecían regularmente en el Templo del Señor durante toda la vida de Joiada.
15Joiada envejeció y murió a la edad de 130 años, habiendo vivido una vida plena.
16Fue enterrado con los reyes en la Ciudad de David, por todo el bien que había hecho en Israel por Dios y su Templo.
17Pero después de la muerte de Joiada, los líderes de Judá vinieron a jurar su lealtad al rey, y él escuchó sus consejos.
18Abandonaron el Templo del Señor, el Dios de sus antepasados, y adoraron postes de Asera e ídolos. Judá y Jerusalén fueron castigados por su pecado.
19El Señor envió a los profetas para que hicieran volver al pueblo a él y les advirtieran, pero ellos se negaron a escuchar.
20Entonces el Espíritu de Dios vino a Zacarías, hijo del sacerdote Joiada. Se puso de pie ante el pueblo y les dijo: “Esto es lo que dice Dios: ‘¿Por qué quebrantan los mandamientos del Señor para no tener éxito? Siendo que han abandonado al Señor, él los ha abandonado a ustedes’”.
21Entonces los dirigentes tramaron un complot para matar a Zacarías, y por orden del rey lo apedrearon hasta la muerte en el patio del Templo del Señor.
22El rey Joás demostró que había olvidado la lealtad y el amor que le había demostrado Joiada, el padre de Zacarías, al matar a su hijo. Al morir, Zacarías gritó: “¡Que el Señor vea lo que has hecho y te lo pague!”.
23Al final del año, el ejército arameo vino a atacar a Joás. Invadieron Judá y Jerusalén y mataron a todos los líderes del pueblo, y enviaron todo su botín al rey de Damasco.
24Aunque el ejército arameo había llegado con pocos hombres, el Señor les dio la victoria sobre un ejército muy numeroso, porque Judá había abandonado al Señor, el Dios de sus antepasados. De esta manera castigaron a Joás.
25Cuando los arameos se fueron, dejaron a Joás malherido. Pero entonces sus propios oficiales conspiraron contra él por haber asesinado al hijo del sacerdote Joiada, y lo mataron en su lecho. Lo enterraron en la Ciudad de David, pero no en el cementerio de los reyes.
26Los que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad, hijo de Simeat, una mujer amonita, y Jozabad, hijo de Simrit, una mujer moabita.
27La historia de los hijos de Joás, así como las numerosas profecías sobre él y sobre la restauración del Templo de Dios, se recogen en el Comentario al Libro de los Reyes. Posteriormente su hijo Amasías le sucedió como rey.

1DE SIETE años era Joas cuando comenzó á reinar, y cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalem. El nombre de su madre fué Sibia, de Beer-seba.
2E hizo Joas lo recto en ojos de Jehová todos los días de Joiada el sacerdote.
3Y tomó para él Joiada dos mujeres; y engendró hijos é hijas.
4Después de esto aconteció que Joas tuvo voluntad de reparar la casa de Jehová.
5Y juntó los sacerdotes y los Levitas, y díjoles: Salid por las ciudades de Judá, y juntad dinero de todo Israel, para que cada año sea reparada la casa de vuestro Dios; y vosotros poned diligencia en el negocio. Mas los Levitas no pusieron diligencia.
6Por lo cual el rey llamó á Joiada el principal, y díjole: ¿Por qué no has procurado que los Levitas traigan de Judá y de Jerusalem al tabernáculo del testimonio, la ofrenda que impuso Moisés siervo de Jehová, y de la congregación de Israel?
7Porque la impía Athalía y sus hijos habían destruído la casa de Dios, y además habían gastado en los ídolos todas las cosas consagradas á la casa de Jehová.
8Mandó pues el rey que hiciesen un arca, la cual pusieron fuera á la puerta de la casa de Jehová;
9E hicieron pregonar en Judá y en Jerusalem, que trajesen á Jehová la ofrenda que Moisés siervo de Dios había impuesto á Israel en el desierto.
10Y todos los príncipes y todo el pueblo se holgaron: y traían, y echaban en el arca hasta henchirla.
11Y como venía el tiempo para llevar el arca al magistrado del rey por mano de los Levitas, cuando veían que había mucho dinero, venía el escriba del rey, y el que estaba puesto por el sumo sacerdote, y llevaban el arca, y vaciábanla, y volvíanla á su lugar: y así lo hacían de día en día, y recogían mucho dinero;
12El cual daba el rey y Joiada á los que hacían la obra del servicio de la casa de Jehová, y tomaban canteros y oficiales que reparasen la casa de Jehová, y herreros y metalarios para componer la casa de Jehová.
13Hacían pues los oficiales la obra, y por sus manos fué la obra restaurada, y restituyeron la casa de Dios á su condición, y la consolidaron.
14Y cuando hubieron acabado, trajeron lo que quedaba del dinero al rey y á Joiada, é hicieron de él vasos para la casa de Jehová, vasos para el servicio, morteros, cucharas, vasos de oro y de plata. Y sacrificaban holocaustos continuamente en la casa de Jehová todos los días de Joiada.
15Mas Joiada envejeció, y murió harto de días: de ciento y treinta años era cuando murió.
16Y sepultáronlo en la ciudad de David con los reyes, por cuanto había hecho bien con Israel, y para con Dios, y con su casa.
17Muerto Joiada, vinieron los príncipes de Judá, é hicieron acatamiento al rey; y el rey los oyó.
18Y desampararon la casa de Jehová el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron á los bosques y á las imágenes esculpidas; y la ira vino sobre Judá y Jerusalem por este su pecado.
19Y envióles profetas, para que los redujesen á Jehová, los cuales les protestaron: mas ellos no los escucharon.
20Y el espíritu de Dios envistió á Zachârías, hijo de Joiada el sacerdote, el cual estando sobre el pueblo, les dijo: Así ha dicho Dios: ¿Por qué quebrantáis los mandamientos de Jehová? No os vendrá bien de ello; porque por haber dejado á Jehová, él también os dejará.
21Mas ellos hicieron conspiración contra él, y cubriéronle de piedras por mandato del rey, en el patio de la casa de Jehová.
22No tuvo pues memoria el rey Joas de la misericordia que su padre Joiada había hecho con él, antes matóle su hijo; el cual dijo al morir: Jehová lo vea, y lo requiera.
23A la vuelta del año subió contra él el ejército de Siria; y vinieron á Judá y á Jerusalem, y destruyeron en el pueblo á todos los principales de él, y enviaron todos sus despojos al rey á Damasco.
24Porque aunque el ejército de Siria había venido con poca gente, Jehová les entregó en sus manos un ejército muy numeroso; por cuanto habían dejado á Jehová el Dios de sus padres. Y con Joas hicieron juicios.
25Y yéndose de él los Siros, dejáronlo en muchas enfermedades; y conspiraron contra él sus siervos á causa de las sangres de los hijos de Joiada el sacerdote, é hiriéronle en su cama, y murió: y sepultáronle en la ciudad de David, mas no lo sepultaron en los sepulcros de los reyes.
26Los que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad, hijo de Simath Ammonita, y Jozabad, hijo de Simrith Moabita.
27De sus hijos, y de la multiplicación que hizo de las rentas, y de la instauración de la casa de Jehová, he aquí está escrito en la historia del libro de los reyes. Y reinó en su lugar Amasías su hijo.

1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.
2And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
3And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.
4And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.
5And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.
6And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?
7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim.
8And at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD.
9And they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.
10And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.
11Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
12And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD.
13So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.
14And when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada.
15But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.
16And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.
17Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.
18And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.
19Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.
20And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.
21And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.
22Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The LORD look upon it, and require it.
23And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
24For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.
25And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.
26And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.
27Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

6The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, “Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the Tent of the Testimony?”
7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up God’s house; and they also gave all the dedicated things of the LORD’s house to the Baals.
8So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the LORD’s house.

20The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “God says, ‘Why do you disobey the LORD’s commandments, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has also forsaken you.’”
21They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the LORD’s house.
22Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May the LORD look at it, and repay it.”
23At the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came up against him. They came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their plunder to the king of Damascus.
24For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and the LORD delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.
25When they had departed from him (for they left him seriously wounded), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died. They buried him in David’s city, but they didn’t bury him in the tombs of the kings.
26These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.
27Now concerning his sons, the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the rebuilding of God’s house, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
