Después de estas cosas, y de tanta fidelidad de Ezequías , sobrevino Sennaquerib, rey de los asirios; y entrándose por las tierras de Judá, puso sitio a las ciudades fuertes para apoderarse de ellas.
DESPUÉS de estas cosas y de esta fidelidad, vino Sennachêrib rey de los Asirios, entró en Judá, y asentó campo contra las ciudades fuertes, y determinó de entrar en ellas.

Al mismo tiempo reparó con gran diligencia todas las partes del muro que estaban ya arruinadas, y construyó torres encima y otro muro exterior; y restauró la fortaleza de Mello en la ciudad de David o monte Sión, e hizo provisión de todo género de armas y escudos.

Pues él tiene consigo un brazo de carne; pero con nosotros está el Señor Dios nuestro, el cual es nuestro defensor, y pelea por nosotros. Al oír el pueblo estas palabras de Ezequías , rey de Judá, cobró gran aliento.

Pasadas estas cosas, Sennaquerib, rey de los asirios (estando con todo su ejército sitiando a Laquís) envió sus mensajeros a Jerusalén a decir a Ezequías , rey de Judá, y a todo el pueblo que se hallaba en la ciudad:

Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

Pues, ¿no es ese Ezequías el que destruyó sus adoratorios en las alturas y sus altares; y habló a los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén , diciendo: Delante de un solo altar habéis de adorar, y en él solo quemar el incienso?

No os dejéis, pues, engañar de Ezequías , ni seducir con vanas persuasiones, y no le deis crédito; porque si ninguno de los dioses de las naciones, ni de los otros reinos, pudo librar a su pueblo de mis manos, ni de las manos de mis padres, es consiguiente que tampoco vuestro Dios podrá libertaros de caer en las mías.

Otras muchas cosas hablaron también los mensajeros de Sennaquerib contra el Señor Dios y contra Ezequías , su siervo.

Escribió igualmente unas cartas llenas de blasfemias contra el Señor Dios de Israel, diciendo contra él: Así como los dioses de las demás naciones no pudieron librar a sus pueblos de caer en mis manos, tampoco podrá el Dios de Ezequías salvar a su pueblo del poder mío.

He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.

Sobre todo a grandes voces gritaba en lengua hebrea contra el pueblo que estaba sobre los muros de Jerusalén , a fin de aterrarle y apoderarse de la ciudad.
Y clamaron á gran voz en judaico al pueblo de Jerusalem que estaba en los muros, para espantarlos y ponerles temor, para tomar la ciudad.

Verdad es que por haberle sido enviados por embajadores magnates de Babilonia, para que se informaran del prodigio, que por ocasión suya había acaecido en la tierra, el Señor le dejó de su mano; a fin de probarle y hacer patente todo cuanto tenía en su corazón.
