1Cuando yo, Pablo, les ruego algo, lo hago con la misma ternura y bondad de Cristo. Sin embargo, se ha dicho que cuando les escribo soy fuerte, pero que cuando lo hago personalmente soy suave.
2¡Espero que cuando vaya a verlos no tenga que ser duro con los que piensan que actúo como un hombre cualquiera!
3Sí, es cierto, vivimos en este mundo, pero nunca actuamos como el mundo para ganar nuestras batallas.
4Para destruir las fortalezas del mal, no empleamos armas humanas, sino las armas del poder de Dios.
5Así podemos destruir la altivez de cualquier argumento y cualquier muralla que pretenda interponerse para que el hombre conozca a Dios. De esa manera, hacemos que todo tipo de pensamiento se someta para que obedezca a Cristo.
6Y estamos listos a castigar a cualquiera que persista en su rebeldía, después que ustedes mismos se hayan rendido totalmente a Cristo.
7Fíjense en lo que tienen a la vista. Si alguien puede afirmar que le pertenece a Cristo, lo mismo podemos decir nosotros.
8No me avergonzaré de insistir demasiado en la autoridad que tengo sobre ustedes, autoridad que el Señor me dio para la edificación de ustedes, no para su destrucción.
9Les digo esto para que no crean que sólo trato de asustarlos con mis cartas.
10«En sus cartas se expresa muy bruscamente y con palabras duras», dicen algunos. «¡Pero cuando llegue verán que en persona no impresiona a nadie y que no existe peor predicador!».
11Estas personas deben saber que esta vez voy a ser tan duro en persona como lo soy por carta.
12Pero no me voy a igualar ni a comparar con los que por ahí andan hablando de lo excelentes que son. El problema de estos es que se comparan entre sí y se miden de acuerdo con sus propios conceptos. ¡Qué tontería!
13¡Jamás nos jactamos más de lo debido! Y si lo hacemos, utilizamos como regla el trabajo que Dios nos mandó hacer, lo cual incluye que trabajemos entre ustedes.
14Si no hubiéramos estado antes entre ustedes, alguien podría decir que nos estamos extralimitando. Lo cierto es que fuimos los primeros en proclamarles las buenas noticias de Cristo.
15Así que no queremos que se nos atribuya el trabajo que otros han realizado entre ustedes. Al contrario, esperamos que ustedes se desarrollen en la fe y que, dentro de los límites que se nos han concedido, nuestra obra entre ustedes se amplíe bastante.
16Entonces podremos predicar el evangelio en ciudades más allá de Corinto, para que nadie diga que nos aprovechamos de lo que ya otros han hecho.
17Como dicen las Escrituras: «El que se quiera sentir orgulloso, que se enorgullezca en lo que el Señor hace».
18Porque la persona que de veras es digna de aprobación no es la que se alaba a sí misma, sino aquella a la que el Señor alaba.

1EMPERO yo Pablo, os ruego por la mansedumbre y modestia de Cristo, yo que presente ciertamente soy bajo entre vosotros, mas ausente soy confiado entre vosotros:
2Ruego pues, que cuando estuviere presente, no tenga que ser atrevido con la confianza con que estoy en ánimo de ser resuelto para con algunos, que nos tienen como si anduviésemos según la carne.
3Pues aunque andamos en la carne, no militamos según la carne,
4(Porque las armas de nuestra milicia no son carnales, sino poderosas en Dios para la destrucción de fortalezas;)
5Destruyendo consejos, y toda altura que se levanta contra la ciencia de Dios, y cautivando todo intento á la obediencia de Cristo;
6Y estando prestos para castigar toda desobediencia, cuando vuestra obediencia fuere cumplida.
7Miráis las cosas según la apariencia. Si alguno está confiado en sí mismo que es de Cristo, esto también piense por sí mismo, que como él es de Cristo, así también nosotros somos de Cristo.
8Porque aunque me gloríe aún un poco de nuestra potestad (la cual el Señor nos dió para edificación y no para vuestra destrucción), no me avergonzaré;
9Porque no parezca como que os quiero espantar por cartas.
10Porque á la verdad, dicen, las cartas son graves y fuertes; mas la presencia corporal flaca, y la palabra menospreciable.
11Esto piense el tal, que cuales somos en la palabra por cartas estando ausentes, tales seremos también en hechos, estando presentes.
12Porque no osamos entremeternos ó compararnos con algunos que se alaban á sí mismos: mas ellos, midiéndose á sí mismos por sí mismos, y comparándose consigo mismos no son juiciosos.
13Nosotros empero, no nos gloriaremos fuera de nuestra medida, sino conforme á la medida de la regla, de la medida que Dios nos repartió, para llegar aun hasta vosotros.
14Porque no nos extendemos sobre nuestra medida, como si no llegásemos hasta vosotros: porque también hasta vosotros hemos llegado en el evangelio de Cristo:
15No gloriándonos fuera de nuestra medida en trabajos ajenos; mas teniendo esperanza del crecimiento de vuestra fe, que seremos muy engrandecidos entre vosotros, conforme á nuestra regla.
16Y que anunciaremos el evangelio en los lugares más allá de vosotros, sin entrar en la medida de otro para gloriarnos en lo que ya estaba aparejado.
17Mas el que se gloría, gloríese en el Señor.
18Porque no el que se alaba á sí mismo, el tal es aprobado; mas aquel á quien Dios alaba.

1Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
2But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
7Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
8For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
9That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
10For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
11Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
12For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
13But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
14For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
15Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
16To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand.
17But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
18For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.

1Now I Paul, myself, entreat you by the humility and gentleness of Christ, I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.
2Yes, I beg you that I may not, when present, show courage with the confidence with which I intend to be bold against some, who consider us to be walking according to the flesh.
3For though we walk in the flesh, we don’t wage war according to the flesh;
4for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds,
5throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
6and being in readiness to avenge all disobedience when your obedience is made full.
7Do you look at things only as they appear in front of your face? If anyone trusts in himself that he is Christ’s, let him consider this again with himself, that even as he is Christ’s, so we also are Christ’s.
8For even if I boast somewhat abundantly concerning our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for casting you down, I will not be ashamed,
9that I may not seem as if I desire to terrify you by my letters.
10For, “His letters”, they say, “are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech is despised.”
11Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when we are absent, such are we also in deed when we are present.
12For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.
13But we will not boast beyond proper limits, but within the boundaries with which God appointed to us, which reach even to you.
14For we don’t stretch ourselves too much, as though we didn’t reach to you. For we came even as far as to you with the Good News of Christ,
15not boasting beyond proper limits in other men’s labors, but having hope that as your faith grows, we will be abundantly enlarged by you in our sphere of influence,
16so as to preach the Good News even to the parts beyond you, not to boast in what someone else has already done.
17But “he who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.”
18For it isn’t he who commends himself who is approved, but whom the Lord commends.
