En términos generales, Jotán fue un buen rey. Como su padre Uzías, siguió al Señor. Pero no destruyó los santuarios de las colinas, donde el pueblo hacía sacrificios y quemaba incienso. Fue durante su reinado que se construyó la puerta superior del templo del Señor.

Y él hizo lo recto en ojos de Jehová; hizo conforme á todas las cosas que había hecho su padre Uzzía.

And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD: he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done.
