1Und die Söhne der Propheten sprachen zu Elisa: Siehe doch, der Ort, wo wir vor dir wohnen, ist uns zu enge;
2laß uns doch an den Jordan gehen und von dannen ein jeder einen Balken holen, und uns dort einen Ort herrichten, um daselbst zu wohnen.
3Und er sprach: Gehet hin. Und einer sprach: Laß es dir doch gefallen und gehe mit deinen Knechten! Und er sprach: Ich will mitgehen.
4Und er ging mit ihnen; und sie kamen an den Jordan und hieben die Bäume um.
5Es geschah aber, als einer einen Balken fällte, da fiel das Eisen ins Wasser; und er schrie und sprach: Ach, mein Herr! Und es war entlehnt!
6Und der Mann Gottes sprach: Wohin ist es gefallen? Und er zeigte ihm die Stelle; da schnitt er ein Holz ab und warf es hinein und machte das Eisen schwimmen.
7Und er sprach: Nimm es dir auf. Und er streckte seine Hand aus und nahm es.
8Und der König von Syrien führte Krieg wider Israel; und er beriet sich mit seinen Knechten und sprach: An dem und dem Orte soll mein Lager sein.
9Da sandte der Mann Gottes zum König von Israel und ließ ihm sagen: Hüte dich, diesen Ort zu vernachlässigen; denn dort kommen die Syrer herab.
10Und der König von Israel sandte an den Ort, den der Mann Gottes ihm gesagt und vor dem er ihn gewarnt hatte, und er verwahrte sich daselbst; und das geschah nicht einmal und nicht zweimal.
11Da wurde das Herz des Königs von Syrien über diese Sache beunruhigt; und er rief seine Knechte und sprach zu ihnen: Könnt ihr mir nicht kundtun, wer von den Unsrigen für den König von Israel ist?
12Und einer von seinen Knechten sprach: Nicht doch, mein Herr König; sondern Elisa, der Prophet, der in Israel ist, tut dem König von Israel die Worte kund, die du in deinem Schlafgemach redest.
13Da sprach er: Gehet hin und sehet, wo er ist; und ich werde hinsenden und ihn holen. Und es wurde ihm berichtet und gesagt: Siehe, er ist in Dothan.
14Da sandte er Rosse und Wagen dorthin und ein starkes Heer; und sie kamen des Nachts und umzingelten die Stadt.
15Und als der Diener des Mannes Gottes früh aufstand und hinaustrat, siehe da, ein Heer umringte die Stadt, und Rosse und Wagen. Und sein Knabe sprach zu ihm: Ach, mein Herr! Was sollen wir tun?
16Aber er sprach: Fürchte dich nicht! Denn mehr sind derer, die bei uns, als derer, die bei ihnen sind.
17Und Elisa betete und sprach: Jehova, öffne doch seine Augen, daß er sehe! Da öffnete Jehova die Augen des Knaben; und er sah: und siehe, der Berg war voll feuriger Rosse und Wagen, rings um Elisa her.
18Und sie kamen zu ihm herab; und Elisa betete zu Jehova und sprach: Schlage doch dieses Volk mit Blindheit! Und er schlug sie mit Blindheit nach dem Worte Elisas.
19Und Elisa sprach zu ihnen: Dies ist nicht der Weg, und dies nicht die Stadt; folget mir, und ich werde euch zu dem Manne führen, den ihr suchet. Und er führte sie nach Samaria.
20Und es geschah, als sie nach Samaria gekommen waren, da sprach Elisa: Jehova, öffne diesen die Augen, daß sie sehen! Da öffnete Jehova ihnen die Augen; und sie sahen: und siehe, sie waren mitten in Samaria.
21Und der König von Israel sprach zu Elisa, als er sie sah: Soll ich schlagen, soll ich schlagen, mein Vater?
22Aber er sprach: Du sollst nicht schlagen. Würdest du die schlagen, welche du mit deinem Schwerte und mit deinem Bogen gefangen genommen hättest? Setze ihnen Brot und Wasser vor, daß sie essen und trinken und dann zu ihrem Herrn ziehen.
23Und er richtete ihnen ein großes Mahl zu, und sie aßen und tranken; und er entließ sie, und sie zogen zu ihrem Herrn. Und die Streifscharen der Syrer kamen hinfort nicht mehr in das Land Israel.
24Und es geschah hernach, da versammelte Ben-Hadad, der König von Syrien, sein ganzes Heer, und zog herauf und belagerte Samaria.
25Und es entstand eine große Hungersnot in Samaria; und siehe, sie belagerten es, bis ein Eselskopf achtzig Sekel Silber und ein Viertel Kab Taubenmist fünf Sekel Silber galt.
26Und es geschah, als der König von Israel auf der Mauer einherging, da schrie ein Weib zu ihm und sprach: Hilf, mein Herr König!
27Aber er sprach: Hilft dir Jehova nicht, woher sollte ich dir helfen? Von der Tenne oder von der Kelter?
28Und der König sprach zu ihr: Was ist dir? Und sie sprach: Dieses Weib da hat zu mir gesagt: Gib deinen Sohn her, daß wir ihn heute essen; und meinen Sohn wollen wir morgen essen.
29Und so kochten wir meinen Sohn und aßen ihn. Und ich sprach zu ihr am anderen Tage: Gib deinen Sohn her, daß wir ihn essen! Aber sie hat ihren Sohn verborgen.
30Und es geschah, als der König die Worte des Weibes hörte, da zerriß er seine Kleider, während er auf der Mauer einherging; und das Volk sah, und siehe, er trug Sacktuch darunter auf seinem Leibe.
31Und er sprach: So soll mir Gott tun und so hinzufügen, wenn der Kopf Elisas, des Sohnes Saphats, heute auf ihm bleibt!
32Und Elisa saß in seinem Hause, und die Ältesten saßen bei ihm. Und der König sandte einen Mann vor sich her. Ehe der Bote zu ihm kam, sprach er aber zu den Ältesten: Habt ihr gesehen, daß dieser Mördersohn hergesandt hat, um mir den Kopf wegzunehmen? Sehet zu, sobald der Bote kommt, verschließet die Tür und dränget ihn mit der Tür hinweg! Ist nicht der Schall der Tritte seines Herrn hinter ihm?
33Noch redete er mit ihnen, siehe, da kam der Bote zu ihm herab; und er sprach: Siehe, dieses Unglück ist von Jehova; was soll ich noch auf Jehova harren?

1LOS hijos de los profetas dijeron á Eliseo: He aquí, el lugar en que moramos contigo nos es estrecho.
2Vamos ahora al Jordán, y tomemos de allí cada uno una viga, y hagámonos allí lugar en que habitemos. Y él dijo: Andad.
3Y dijo uno: Rogámoste que quieras venir con tus siervos. Y él respondió: Yo iré.
4Fuése pues con ellos; y como llegaron al Jordán, cortaron la madera.
5Y aconteció que derribando uno un árbol, cayósele el hacha en el agua; y dió voces, diciendo: ¡Ah, señor mío, que era emprestada!
6Y el varón de Dios dijo: ¿Dónde cayó? Y él le mostró el lugar. Entonces cortó él un palo, y echólo allí; é hizo nadar el hierro.
7Y dijo: Tómalo. Y él tendió la mano, y tomólo.
8Tenía el rey de Siria guerra contra Israel, y consultando con sus siervos, dijo: En tal y tal lugar estará mi campamento.
9Y el varón de Dios envió á decir al rey de Israel: Mira que no pases por tal lugar, porque los Siros van allí.
10Entonces el rey de Israel envió á aquel lugar que el varón de Dios había dicho y amonestádole; y guardóse de allí, no una vez ni dos.
11Y el corazón del rey de Siria fué turbado de esto; y llamando á sus siervos, díjoles: ¿No me declararéis vosotros quién de los nuestros es del rey de Israel?
12Entonces uno de los siervos dijo: No, rey señor mío; sino que el profeta Eliseo está en Israel, el cual declara al rey de Israel las palabras que tú hablas en tu más secreta cámara.
13Y él dijo: Id, y mirad dónde está, para que yo envíe á tomarlo. Y fuéle dicho: He aquí él está en Dothán.
14Entonces envió el rey allá gente de á caballo, y carros, y un grande ejército, los cuales vinieron de noche, y cercaron la ciudad.
15Y levantándose de mañana el que servía al varón de Dios, para salir, he aquí el ejército que tenía cercada la ciudad, con gente de á caballo y carros. Entonces su criado le dijo: ¡Ah, señor mío! ¿qué haremos?
16Y él le dijo: No hayas miedo: porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.
17Y oró Eliseo, y dijo: Ruégote, oh Jehová, que abras sus ojos para que vea. Entonces Jehová abrió los ojos del mozo, y miró: y he aquí que el monte estaba lleno de gente de á caballo, y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo.
18Y luego que los Siros descendieron á él, oró Eliseo á Jehová, y dijo: Ruégote que hieras á esta gente con ceguedad. E hiriólos con ceguedad, conforme al dicho de Eliseo.
19Después les dijo Eliseo: No es este el camino, ni es esta la ciudad; seguidme, que yo os guiaré al hombre que buscáis. Y guiólos á Samaria.
20Y así que llegaron á Samaria, dijo Eliseo: Jehová, abre los ojos de éstos, para que vean. Y Jehová abrió sus ojos, y miraron, y halláronse en medio de Samaria.
21Y cuando el rey de Israel los hubo visto, dijo á Eliseo: ¿Herirélos, padre mío?
22Y él le respondió: No los hieras; ¿herirías tú á los que tomaste cautivos con tu espada y con tu arco? Pon delante de ellos pan y agua, para que coman y beban, y se vuelvan á sus señores.
23Entonces les fué aparejada grande comida: y como hubieron comido y bebido, enviólos, y ellos se volvieron á su señor. Y nunca más vinieron cuadrillas de Siria á la tierra de Israel.
24Después de esto aconteció, que Ben-adad rey de Siria juntó todo su ejército, y subió, y puso cerco á Samaria.
25Y hubo grande hambre en Samaria, teniendo ellos cerco sobre ella; tanto, que la cabeza de un asno era vendida por ochenta piezas de plata, y la cuarta de un cabo de estiércol de palomas por cinco piezas de plata.
26Y pasando el rey de Israel por el muro, una mujer le dió voces, y dijo: Salva, rey señor mío.
27Y él dijo: Si no te salva Jehová, ¿de dónde te tengo de salvar yo? ¿del alfolí, ó del lagar?
28Y díjole el rey: ¿Qué tienes? Y ella respondió: Esta mujer me dijo: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo hoy, y mañana comeremos el mío.
29Cocimos pues mi hijo, y le comimos. El día siguiente yo le dije: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo. Mas ella ha escondido su hijo.
30Y como el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, rasgó sus vestidos, y pasó así por el muro: y llegó á ver el pueblo el saco que traía interiormente sobre su carne.
31Y él dijo: Así me haga Dios, y así me añada, si la cabeza de Eliseo hijo de Saphat quedare sobre él hoy.
32Estaba á la sazón Eliseo sentado en su casa, y con él estaban sentados los ancianos: y el rey envió á él un hombre. Mas antes que el mensajero viniese á él, dijo él á los ancianos: ¿No habéis visto cómo este hijo del homicida me envía á quitar la cabeza? Mirad pues, y cuando viniere el mensajero, cerrad la puerta, é impedidle la entrada: ¿no viene tras él el ruido de los pies de su amo?
33Aun estaba él hablando con ellos, y he aquí el mensajero que descendía á él; y dijo: Ciertamente este mal de Jehová viene. ¿Para qué tengo de esperar más á Jehová?

1And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.
2Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.
3And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.
4So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.
5But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.
6And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.
7Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.
8Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.
9And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.
10And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and saved himself there, not once nor twice.
11Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?
12And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.
13And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.
14Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.
15And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?
16And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.
17And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
18And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
19And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.
20And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
21And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?
22And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
23And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
24And it came to pass after this, that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.
25And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.
26And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.
27And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?
28And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow.
29So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.
30And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.
31Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
32But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
33And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
World English Bible
1The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See now, the place where we live and meet with you is too small for us.
2Please let us go to the Jordan, and each man take a beam from there, and let’s make us a place there, where we may live.” He answered, “Go!”
3One said, “Please be pleased to go with your servants.” He answered, “I will go.”
4So he went with them. When they came to the Jordan, they cut down wood.
5But as one was cutting down a tree, the ax head fell into the water. Then he cried out and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.”
6The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” He showed him the place. He cut down a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float.
7He said, “Take it.” So he put out his hand and took it.
8Now the king of Syria was at war against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”
9The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.”
10The king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of; and he saved himself there, not once or twice.
11The king of Syria’s heart was very troubled about this. He called his servants, and said to them, “Won’t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”
12One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”
13He said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him.” He was told, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”
14Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night and surrounded the city.
15When the servant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”
16He answered, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
17Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, please open his eyes, that he may see.” the LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.
18When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.” He struck them with blindness according to Elisha’s word.
19Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” He led them to Samaria.
20When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “LORD, open these men’s eyes, that they may see.” The LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the middle of Samaria.
21The king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, “My father, shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?”
22He answered, “You shall not strike them. Would you strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, then go to their master.”
23He prepared a great feast for them. After they ate and drank, he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria stopped raiding the land of Israel.
24After this, Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.
25There was a great famine in Samaria. Behold, they besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a kab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.
26As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!”
27He said, “If the LORD doesn’t help you, where could I get help for you? From the threshing floor, or from the wine press?”
28Then the king asked her, “What is your problem?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’
29So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him;’ and she has hidden her son.”
30When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. Now he was passing by on the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth underneath on his body.
31Then he said, “God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat stays on him today.”
32But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”
33While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, “Behold, this evil is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
