Un día, los discípulos de profetas le dijeron a Eliseo:
LOS hijos de los profetas dijeron á Eliseo: He aquí, el lugar en que moramos contigo nos es estrecho.
And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us.
The sons of the prophets said to Elisha, “See now, the place where we live and meet with you is too small for us.
―Como puede ver, el dormitorio es muy estrecho. Díganos si podemos edificar uno nuevo con madera traída de las orillas del río Jordán. ―Muy bien háganlo —les dijo.
Vamos ahora al Jordán, y tomemos de allí cada uno una viga, y hagámonos allí lugar en que habitemos. Y él dijo: Andad.
Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.
Please let us go to the Jordan, and each man take a beam from there, and let’s make us a place there, where we may live.” He answered, “Go!”
―Señor, acompáñenos —le dijo uno de los jóvenes. ―Iré con ustedes —respondió.
Y dijo uno: Rogámoste que quieras venir con tus siervos. Y él respondió: Yo iré.
And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go.
One said, “Please be pleased to go with your servants.” He answered, “I will go.”
Cuando llegaron al río Jordán, comenzaron a cortar árboles,
Fuése pues con ellos; y como llegaron al Jordán, cortaron la madera.
So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood.

pero a uno de ellos se le cayó el hacha al río. ―¡Señor, era prestada! —gritó.
Y aconteció que derribando uno un árbol, cayósele el hacha en el agua; y dió voces, diciendo: ¡Ah, señor mío, que era emprestada!
But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed.
But as one was cutting down a tree, the ax head fell into the water. Then he cried out and said, “Alas, my master! For it was borrowed.”
―¿Dónde cayó? —preguntó el profeta. El joven le mostró el lugar, y Eliseo cortó un palo, lo lanzó al agua e hizo que el hacha subiera a la superficie y flotara.
Y el varón de Dios dijo: ¿Dónde cayó? Y él le mostró el lugar. Entonces cortó él un palo, y echólo allí; é hizo nadar el hierro.
And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; and the iron did swim.
The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” He showed him the place. He cut down a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float.
―Sácala —le dijo Eliseo. Entonces el profeta la sacó.
Y dijo: Tómalo. Y él tendió la mano, y tomólo.
Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.
He said, “Take it.” So he put out his hand and took it.
Una vez en que el rey de Siria estaba en guerra con Israel, les dijo a sus oficiales: «Movilizaremos nuestras tropas a tal lugar» (y dijo el nombre de un lugar).
Tenía el rey de Siria guerra contra Israel, y consultando con sus siervos, dijo: En tal y tal lugar estará mi campamento.
Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place shall be my camp.
Now the king of Syria was at war against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”
Inmediatamente Eliseo advirtió al rey de Israel: «No vayan a tal lugar (y nombró el mismo lugar), porque los sirios están poniendo emboscadas contra ustedes allí».
Y el varón de Dios envió á decir al rey de Israel: Mira que no pases por tal lugar, porque los Siros van allí.
And the man of God sent unto the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; for thither the Syrians are come down.
The man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, “Beware that you not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there.”
El rey entonces envió a algunos espías para ver si Eliseo tenía razón. Se confirmó el hecho, y así se salvaron de un desastre. Esto ocurrió repetidas veces.
Entonces el rey de Israel envió á aquel lugar que el varón de Dios había dicho y amonestádole; y guardóse de allí, no una vez ni dos.

El rey de Siria, asombrado, convocó a sus oficiales y les preguntó: ―¿Quién de ustedes es el traidor? ¿Quién ha estado revelándole mis planes al rey de Israel?
Y el corazón del rey de Siria fué turbado de esto; y llamando á sus siervos, díjoles: ¿No me declararéis vosotros quién de los nuestros es del rey de Israel?
Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?
The king of Syria’s heart was very troubled about this. He called his servants, and said to them, “Won’t you show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”
―Ninguno de nosotros —contestó uno de los oficiales—. Es el profeta Eliseo el que le dice al rey de Israel las mismas palabras que tú hablas en lo más privado de tu habitación.
Entonces uno de los siervos dijo: No, rey señor mío; sino que el profeta Eliseo está en Israel, el cual declara al rey de Israel las palabras que tú hablas en tu más secreta cámara.
And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.
One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”
―¡Vayan y averigüen dónde está! ¡Enviaré soldados para que lo tomen preso! —exclamó el rey. Pronto llegó el informe: «Eliseo está en Dotán».
Y él dijo: Id, y mirad dónde está, para que yo envíe á tomarlo. Y fuéle dicho: He aquí él está en Dothán.
And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.
He said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him.” He was told, “Behold, he is in Dothan.”
Entonces, una noche, el rey de Siria envió un gran ejército con muchos carros y caballos que rodearon la ciudad.
Entonces envió el rey allá gente de á caballo, y carros, y un grande ejército, los cuales vinieron de noche, y cercaron la ciudad.
Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.
Therefore he sent horses, chariots, and a great army there. They came by night and surrounded the city.
Al día siguiente, cuando el criado del profeta se levantó temprano y salió al exterior, vio las tropas, los caballos y los carros por toda la ciudad. ―¡Ay, señor mío! ¿Qué haremos ahora? —exclamó ante Eliseo.
Y levantándose de mañana el que servía al varón de Dios, para salir, he aquí el ejército que tenía cercada la ciudad, con gente de á caballo y carros. Entonces su criado le dijo: ¡Ah, señor mío! ¿qué haremos?
And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?
When the servant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was around the city. His servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”
―No tengas miedo —le dijo Eliseo—. Son más los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.
Y él le dijo: No hayas miedo: porque más son los que están con nosotros que los que están con ellos.
And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.
He answered, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Entonces Eliseo oró: «Señor, ábrele los ojos a mi criado para que vea». Y el Señor le abrió los ojos al criado y este vio que estaban rodeados de caballos y carros de fuego. ¡No estaban solos en la montaña!
Y oró Eliseo, y dijo: Ruégote, oh Jehová, que abras sus ojos para que vea. Entonces Jehová abrió los ojos del mozo, y miró: y he aquí que el monte estaba lleno de gente de á caballo, y de carros de fuego alrededor de Eliseo.
And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, please open his eyes, that he may see.” the LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.
Cuando los sirios comenzaron a acercarse, Eliseo oró: «Señor, haz que queden ciegos». Y así fue.
Y luego que los Siros descendieron á él, oró Eliseo á Jehová, y dijo: Ruégote que hieras á esta gente con ceguedad. E hiriólos con ceguedad, conforme al dicho de Eliseo.
And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.
When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, and said, “Please strike this people with blindness.” He struck them with blindness according to Elisha’s word.
Entonces Eliseo salió y les dijo: «Se han equivocado de ciudad. Síganme y los llevaré ante el hombre que andan buscando». Y los condujo a Samaria.
Después les dijo Eliseo: No es este el camino, ni es esta la ciudad; seguidme, que yo os guiaré al hombre que buscáis. Y guiólos á Samaria.
And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.
Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, neither is this the city. Follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” He led them to Samaria.
En cuanto llegaron, Eliseo oró: «Señor, ábreles ahora los ojos y permíteles ver». Y el Señor lo hizo; entonces se dieron cuenta de que estaban en Samaria, la capital de Israel.
Y así que llegaron á Samaria, dijo Eliseo: Jehová, abre los ojos de éstos, para que vean. Y Jehová abrió sus ojos, y miraron, y halláronse en medio de Samaria.
And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.
When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “LORD, open these men’s eyes, that they may see.” The LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and behold, they were in the middle of Samaria.
Cuando el rey de Israel los vio, le preguntó a Eliseo: ―Señor, ¿los mataré? ¿Debo matarlos?
Y cuando el rey de Israel los hubo visto, dijo á Eliseo: ¿Herirélos, padre mío?
And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?
The king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, “My father, shall I strike them? Shall I strike them?”
―Desde luego que no —le respondió Eliseo—. ¿Es que nosotros damos muerte a los prisioneros de guerra? Dales de comer y de beber, y envíalos de regreso a su tierra.
Y él le respondió: No los hieras; ¿herirías tú á los que tomaste cautivos con tu espada y con tu arco? Pon delante de ellos pan y agua, para que coman y beban, y se vuelvan á sus señores.
And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
He answered, “You shall not strike them. Would you strike those whom you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, then go to their master.”
Entonces el rey hizo un gran banquete para ellos, y los envió de regreso a su tierra y a su rey. Después de esto los sirios dejaron tranquila la tierra de Israel.
Entonces les fué aparejada grande comida: y como hubieron comido y bebido, enviólos, y ellos se volvieron á su señor. Y nunca más vinieron cuadrillas de Siria á la tierra de Israel.
And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.
He prepared a great feast for them. After they ate and drank, he sent them away and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria stopped raiding the land of Israel.
Sin embargo, algún tiempo después, el rey Ben Adad, de Siria, reunió sus tropas y puso sitio a Samaria.
Después de esto aconteció, que Ben-adad rey de Siria juntó todo su ejército, y subió, y puso cerco á Samaria.
And it came to pass after this, that Ben-hadad king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged Samaria.
After this, Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.
Como resultado hubo gran hambre en la ciudad. Al poco tiempo la cabeza de un burro se vendía hasta por ochenta monedas de plata, y un cuarto de litro de estiércol de paloma, por cinco.
Y hubo grande hambre en Samaria, teniendo ellos cerco sobre ella; tanto, que la cabeza de un asno era vendida por ochenta piezas de plata, y la cuarta de un cabo de estiércol de palomas por cinco piezas de plata.
And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass’s head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove’s dung for five pieces of silver.

Un día que el rey de Israel caminaba sobre el muro de la ciudad, una mujer lo llamó: ―¡Auxilio, señor mío, mi rey! ―Si el Señor no te ayuda, ¿qué puedo hacer yo? —le contestó—. No tengo comida ni vino para darte. Pero, ¿de qué se trata? Ella respondió: ―Esta mujer me propuso que nos comiéramos a mi hijo un día y el suyo al día siguiente. Cocinamos a mi hijo y nos lo comimos, pero al día siguiente, cuando yo le dije: “Ahora nos corresponde comernos a tu hijo” ella lo escondió. Cuando el rey oyó esto, rasgó su ropa. (El pueblo que observaba se dio cuenta, al rasgarse él la ropa, que estaba vestido de ropas ásperas).
Y pasando el rey de Israel por el muro, una mujer le dió voces, y dijo: Salva, rey señor mío.
And as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, my lord, O king.
As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!”

Y él dijo: Si no te salva Jehová, ¿de dónde te tengo de salvar yo? ¿del alfolí, ó del lagar?
And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?
He said, “If the LORD doesn’t help you, where could I get help for you? From the threshing floor, or from the wine press?”

Y díjole el rey: ¿Qué tienes? Y ella respondió: Esta mujer me dijo: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo hoy, y mañana comeremos el mío.
And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow.
Then the king asked her, “What is your problem?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’

Cocimos pues mi hijo, y le comimos. El día siguiente yo le dije: Da acá tu hijo, y comámoslo. Mas ella ha escondido su hijo.
So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.
So we boiled my son and ate him; and I said to her on the next day, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him;’ and she has hidden her son.”

Y como el rey oyó las palabras de aquella mujer, rasgó sus vestidos, y pasó así por el muro: y llegó á ver el pueblo el saco que traía interiormente sobre su carne.
And it came to pass, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon the wall, and the people looked, and, behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.
When the king heard the words of the woman, he tore his clothes. Now he was passing by on the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth underneath on his body.
«¡Que el Señor me mate, si hoy mismo no le corto la cabeza a Eliseo hijo de Safat!» exclamó el rey.
Y él dijo: Así me haga Dios, y así me añada, si la cabeza de Eliseo hijo de Saphat quedare sobre él hoy.
Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day.
Then he said, “God do so to me, and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat stays on him today.”
Eliseo estaba sentado en su casa, con los ancianos de Israel, cuando el rey lo mandó a buscar. Pero antes que llegara el mensajero, Eliseo dijo a los ancianos: ―Este asesino ha enviado a un hombre para que me corte la cabeza. Cuando él llegue, cierren la puerta y déjenlo afuera, porque su amo pronto vendrá tras él.
Estaba á la sazón Eliseo sentado en su casa, y con él estaban sentados los ancianos: y el rey envió á él un hombre. Mas antes que el mensajero viniese á él, dijo él á los ancianos: ¿No habéis visto cómo este hijo del homicida me envía á quitar la cabeza? Mirad pues, y cuando viniere el mensajero, cerrad la puerta, é impedidle la entrada: ¿no viene tras él el ruido de los pies de su amo?
But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away mine head? look, when the messenger cometh, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him?
But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. Then the king sent a man from before him; but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, “Do you see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? Behold, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold the door shut against him. Isn’t the sound of his master’s feet behind him?”
Eliseo aún estaba diciendo esto cuando llegó el mensajero (seguido por el rey). ―El Señor ha causado toda esta aflicción —dijo el rey—. ¿Por qué he de esperar ayuda de él?
Aun estaba él hablando con ellos, y he aquí el mensajero que descendía á él; y dijo: Ciertamente este mal de Jehová viene. ¿Para qué tengo de esperar más á Jehová?
And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
While he was still talking with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. Then he said, “Behold, this evil is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
