Aconteció en la primavera del año, en el tiempo cuando los reyes suelen salir en campaña, que David envió a Joab, y con él a sus esclavos y a todo Israel, los cuales destruyeron a los amonitas y sitiaron a Rabá. Pero David permaneció en Jerusalén.
Y ACONTECIÓ á la vuelta de un año, en el tiempo que salen los reyes á la guerra, que David envió á Joab, y á sus siervos con él, y á todo Israel; y destruyeron á los Ammonitas, y pusieron cerco á Rabba: mas David se quedó en Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

David mandó a preguntar por aquella mujer, y uno dijo: ¿No es ésta Betsabé, hija de Eliam, esposa de Urías el heteo?
Y envió David á preguntar por aquella mujer, y dijéronle: Aquella es Bath-sheba hija de Eliam, mujer de Uría Hetheo.
And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

E hicieron saber esto á David, diciendo: Uría no ha descendido á su casa. Y dijo David á Uría: ¿No has venido de camino? ¿por qué pues no descendiste á tu casa?
And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?

Urías respondió a David: El Arca, Israel y Judá permanecen en tiendas, y mi ʼadón Joab y los esclavos de mi ʼadón acampan a campo abierto. ¿Y yo debo ir a mi casa a comer, a beber y a dormir con mi esposa? ¡Por tu vida y la vida de tu alma, yo no haré tal cosa!
Y Uría respondió á David: El arca, é Israel y Judá, están debajo de tiendas; y mi señor Joab, y los siervos de mi señor sobre la haz del campo: ¿y había yo de entrar en mi casa para comer y beber, y á dormir con mi mujer? Por vida tuya, y por vida de tu alma, que yo no haré tal cosa.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Uriah said to David, “The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!”
David dijo a Urías: Quédate aquí hoy, y mañana te dejaré ir. Así pues, Urías se quedó en Jerusalén aquel día y el siguiente.
Y David dijo á Uría: Estáte aquí aún hoy, y mañana te despacharé. Y quedóse Uría en Jerusalem aquel día y el siguiente.
And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.

Joab comunicó a David todos los sucesos de la guerra,

si sucede que sube la ira del rey y te pregunta: ¿Por qué se acercaron tanto a la ciudad para luchar? ¿No saben lo que lanzan desde el muro?
Si el rey comenzare á enojarse, y te dijere: ¿Por qué os acercasteis á la ciudad peleando? ¿no sabíais lo que suelen arrojar del muro?
And if so be that the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
it shall be that, if the king’s wrath arise, and he asks you, ‘Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn’t you know that they would shoot from the wall?
¿Quién hirió a Abimelec, hijo de Jerobaal? ¿No fue una mujer que lanzó desde el muro un pedazo de rueda de molino, y murió en Tebes? ¿Por qué se acercaron tanto al muro? Entonces tú responderás: También tu esclavo Urías heteo murió.

El mensajero fue y al llegar a David, le narró todo aquello a lo cual Joab lo envió.

Entonces los arqueros tiraron contra tus esclavos desde arriba del muro y murieron algunos de los esclavos del rey. También murió tu esclavo Urías heteo.

David dijo al mensajero: Dirás esto a Joab: Que esto no te desagrade, porque la espada devora tanto a uno como a otro. Refuerza tu ataque contra la ciudad y destrúyela. Y tú, aliéntalo.

Al oír la esposa de Urías que su esposo murió, hizo duelo por su esposo.

Cuando pasó el luto, David mandó traerla a su casa. Ella fue su esposa y le dio un hijo. Pero lo que David hizo fue desagradable delante de Yavé.
