And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

Pero el pueblo dijo: No saldrás, porque si nosotros tenemos que huir, no nos harán caso. Aunque la mitad de nosotros muera, no nos harán caso, pero tú vales hoy como 10.000 de nosotros. Así que será mejor que nos ayudes desde la ciudad.

But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
But the people said, “You shall not go out, for if we flee away, they will not care for us, neither if half of us die, will they care for us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore now it is better that you are ready to help us out of the city.”
El rey les respondió: Haré lo que les parezca bien. Y el rey se detuvo junto a la entrada, mientras el pueblo salía por cientos y por miles.
Entonces el rey les dijo: Yo haré lo que bien os pareciere. Y púsose el rey á la entrada de la puerta, mientras salía todo el pueblo de ciento en ciento y de mil en mil.
And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.

Y el rey dio orden a Joab, Abisai e Itai: Traten con espíritu de perdón al joven Absalón por amor a mí. Todo el pueblo oyó cuando el rey dio orden a todos los jefes acerca de Absalón.

Entonces el pueblo salió a enfrentar a Israel en el campo. La batalla se libró en el bosque de Efraín.

Absalón se halló ante los esclavos de David e iba montado en una mula. Al pasar la mula por debajo del ramaje de un gran roble, se le enredó fuertemente la cabeza en el roble, y quedó suspendido entre el cielo y la tierra. Y la mula que tenía debajo de él, siguió adelante.
Y encontróse Absalom con los siervos de David: é iba Absalom sobre un mulo, y el mulo se entró debajo de un espeso y grande alcornoque, y asiósele la cabeza al alcornoque, y quedó entre el cielo y la tierra; pues el mulo en que iba pasó delante.
And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went away.

Lo vio cierto hombre e informó a Joab: ¡Mira, acabo de ver a Absalón colgado en un roble!

Joab dijo al hombre que le dio la noticia: Y al verlo tú, ¿por qué no lo heriste allí y lo derribaste a tierra? Yo te habría dado 110 gramos de plata y un cinturón.
Y Joab respondió al hombre que le daba la nueva: Y viéndolo tú, ¿por qué no le heriste luego allí echándole á tierra? y sobre mí, que te hubiera dado diez siclos de plata, y un talabarte.
And Joab said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver, and a girdle.
Joab said to the man who told him, “Behold, you saw it, and why didn’t you strike him there to the ground? I would have given you ten pieces of silver and a sash.”
Pero el hombre respondió a Joab: Aunque se pesaran en mis manos 11 kilogramos de plata, yo no extendería mi mano contra el hijo del rey, porque nosotros oímos cuando el rey les dio órdenes a ti, Abisai e Itai: ¡Tengan cuidado que nadie toque al joven Absalón!
Y el hombre dijo á Joab: Aunque me importara en mis manos mil siclos de plata, no extendiera yo mi mano contra el hijo del rey; porque nosotros lo oímos cuando el rey te mandó á ti y á Abisai y á Ittai, diciendo: Mirad que ninguno toque en el joven Absalom.
And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
The man said to Joab, “Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I still wouldn’t stretch out my hand against the king’s son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, ‘Beware that no one touch the young man Absalom.’
De otra manera, si yo hubiera actuado con traición contra su vida (y nada hay escondido del rey), tú mismo tomarías posición contra mí.
Por otra parte, habría yo hecho traición contra mi vida (pues que al rey nada se le esconde), y tú mismo estarías en contra.
Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against me.
Otherwise, if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hidden from the king), then you yourself would have set yourself against me.”
Joab respondió: No perderé mi tiempo contigo. Y tomó tres flechas en su mano, fue y las clavó en el corazón de Absalón, mientras aún éste estaba colgado del roble.
Y respondió Joab: No es razón que yo te ruegue. Y tomando tres dardos en sus manos, hincólos en el corazón de Absalom, que aun estaba vivo en medio del alcornoque.
Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
Then Joab said, “I’m not going to wait like this with you.” He took three darts in his hand and thrust them through Absalom’s heart while he was still alive in the middle of the oak.
Entonces se colocaron alrededor de él los diez jóvenes escuderos de Joab, e hirieron a Absalón y acabaron de matarlo.

And ten young men that bare Joab’s armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.

Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Absalom’s place.

Entonces Ahimaas, hijo de Sadoc, dijo: Te ruego que me permitas correr y llevar al rey la buena noticia de que Yavé lo libró de la mano de sus enemigos.
Entonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc dijo: ¿Correré ahora, y daré las nuevas al rey de como Jehová ha defendido su causa de la mano de sus enemigos?
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, “Let me now run and carry the king news, how the LORD has avenged him of his enemies.”
Pero Joab le contestó: Hoy no serás hombre de buenas noticias, sino otro día las llevarás. Hoy no llevarás buenas noticias, porque el hijo del rey murió.
Y respondió Joab: Hoy no llevarás las nuevas: las llevarás otro día: no darás hoy la nueva, porque el hijo del rey es muerto.
And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
Joab said to him, “You must not be the bearer of news today, but you must carry news another day. But today you must carry no news, because the king’s son is dead.”
En seguida Joab dijo al etíope: Vé, dí al rey lo que viste. Y el etíope se inclinó ante Joab y corrió.
Y Joab dijo á Cusi: Ve tú, y di al rey lo que has visto. Y Cusi hizo reverencia á Joab, y corrió.
Then said Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
Then Joab said to the Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen!” The Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran.
Pero Ahimaas, hijo de Sadoc, volvió a decir a Joab: Sea como sea, te ruego que me permitas que también yo corra tras el etíope. Y Joab dijo: ¿Para qué corres, hijo mío, si no habrá regalos para ti?
Entonces Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc tornó á decir á Joab: Sea lo que fuere, yo correré ahora tras Cusi. Y Joab dijo: Hijo mío, ¿para qué has tú de correr, pues que no hallarás premio por las nuevas?
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said yet again to Joab, “But come what may, please let me also run after the Cushite.” Joab said, “Why do you want to run, my son, since you will have no reward for the news?”
Sea como sea, déjame correr. Y él le dijo: ¡Corre! Entonces Ahimaas corrió por el camino de la llanura, y pasó adelante del etíope.

“But come what may,” he said, “I will run.” He said to him, “Run!” Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.
David estaba sentado entre las dos puertas. El vigía había subido a la azotea de la puerta en el muro. Al alzar sus ojos vio a un hombre que corría solo.

And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
Now David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.
El vigía gritó e informó al rey. Y el rey dijo: Si viene solo, hay buenas noticias en su boca. El hombre continuó y avanzaba. Avanzaba y se acercaba.
El atalaya dió luego voces, é hízolo saber al rey. Y el rey dijo: Si es solo, buenas nuevas trae. En tanto que él venía acercándose,
And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
The watchman shouted and told the king. The king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.” He came closer and closer.
El vigía vio a otro hombre que corría. El vigía dio voces al portero: Aquí viene otro hombre que corre solo. Y el rey respondió: Ese también trae buenas noticias.
Vió el atalaya otro que corría; y dió voces el atalaya al portero, diciendo: He aquí otro hombre que corre solo. Y el rey dijo: Éste también es mensajero.
And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
The watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called to the gatekeeper and said, “Behold, a man running alone!” The king said, “He also brings news.”
Y el vigía dijo: Me parece que la carrera del primero es como la carrera de Ahimaas, hijo de Sadoc. Y dijo el rey: ¡Ése es buen hombre y trae buenas noticias!
Y el atalaya volvió á decir: Paréceme el correr del primero como el correr de Ahimaas hijo de Sadoc. Y respondió el rey: Ese es hombre de bien, y viene con buena nueva.
And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.
The watchman said, “I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.” The king said, “He is a good man, and comes with good news.”
Entonces Ahimaas gritó al rey: ¡Paz! Y se postró delante del rey con su rostro en tierra y dijo: ¡Bendito sea Yavé tu ʼElohim, Quien entregó a los hombres que alzaron su mano contra mi ʼadón el rey!
Entonces Ahimaas dijo en alta voz al rey: Paz. E inclinóse á tierra delante del rey, y dijo: Bendito sea Jehová Dios tuyo, que ha entregado á los hombres que habían levantado sus manos contra mi señor el rey.
And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
Ahimaaz called, and said to the king, “All is well.” He bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, “Blessed is the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king!”
Y el rey dijo: ¿Está bien el joven Absalón? Ahimaas respondió: Vi un gran alboroto cuando Joab envió al esclavo del rey y a tu esclavo, pero no supe qué era.
Y el rey dijo: ¿El mozo Absalom tiene paz? Y Ahimaas respondió: Vi yo un grande alboroto cuando envió Joab al siervo del rey y á mí tu siervo; mas no sé qué era.
And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.
The king said, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” Ahimaaz answered, “When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I don’t know what it was.”
Entonces el rey dijo: Pasa y colócate allí. Y él pasó y se quedó allí en pie.
Y el rey dijo: Pasa, y ponte allí. Y él pasó, y paróse.
And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
The king said, “Come and stand here.” He came and stood still.
También llegó el etíope y dijo: ¡Reciba mi ʼadón el rey la noticia, pues Yavé te libró hoy de la mano de todos aquellos que se levantaron contra ti!
Y luego vino Cusi, y dijo: Reciba nueva mi señor el rey, que hoy Jehová ha defendido tu causa de la mano de todos los que se habían levantado contra ti.
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
Behold, the Cushite came. The Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king, for the LORD has avenged you today of all those who rose up against you.”
Y el rey preguntó al etíope: ¿Está bien el joven Absalón? Y el etíope contestó: ¡Como aquel joven sean los enemigos de mi ʼadón el rey, y todos los que se levantaron contra ti!
El rey entonces dijo á Cusi: ¿El mozo Absalom tiene paz? Y Cusi respondió: Como aquel mozo sean los enemigos de mi señor el rey, y todos los que se levantan contra ti para mal.
And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.
The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” The Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you to do you harm, be as that young man is.”
El rey se conmovió profundamente, subió a la sala que estaba sobre la puerta y lloró. Mientras subía decía: ¡Hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Hijo mío, hijo mío, Absalón! ¡Quién me diera que muriera yo en tu lugar, Absalón, hijo mío, hijo mío!
Entonces el rey se turbó, y subióse á la sala de la puerta, y lloró; y yendo, decía así: ¡Hijo mío Absalom, hijo mío, hijo mío Absalom! ¡Quién me diera que muriera yo en lugar de ti, Absalom, hijo mío, hijo mío!
And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate and wept. As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”
