1Und es ward Joab angesagt: Siehe, der König weint und trägt Leid um Absalom.
2Und es ward aus dem Sieg des Tages ein Leid unter dem ganzen Volk; denn das Volk hatte gehört des Tages, daß sich der König um seinen Sohn bekümmerte.
3Und das Volk stahl sich weg an dem Tage in die Stadt, wie sich ein Volk wegstiehlt, das zu Schanden geworden ist, wenn's im Streit geflohen ist.
4Der König aber hatte sein Angesicht verhüllt und schrie laut: Ach, mein Sohn Absalom! Absalom, mein Sohn, mein Sohn!
5Joab aber kam zum König ins Haus und sprach: Du hast heute schamrot gemacht alle deine Knechte, die heute deine, deiner Söhne, deiner Töchter, deiner Weiber und deiner Kebsweiber Seele errettet haben,
6daß du liebhast, die dich hassen, und haßt, die dich liebhaben. Denn du läßt heute merken, daß dir's nicht gelegen ist an den Hauptleuten und Knechten. Denn ich merke heute wohl: wenn dir nur Absalom lebte und wir heute alle tot wären, das wäre dir recht.
7So mache dich nun auf und gehe heraus und rede mit deinen Knechten freundlich. Denn ich schwöre dir bei dem HERRN: Wirst du nicht herausgehen, es wird kein Mann bei dir bleiben diese Nacht über. Das wird dir ärger sein denn alles Übel, das über dich gekommen ist von deiner Jugend auf bis hierher.
8Da machte sich der König auf und setzte sich ins Tor. Und man sagte es allem Volk: Siehe, der König sitzt im Tor. Da kam alles Volk vor den König. Aber Israel war geflohen, ein jeglicher in seine Hütte.
9Und es zankte sich alles Volk in allen Stämmen Israels und sprachen: Der König hat uns errettet von der Hand unsrer Feinde und erlöste uns von der Philister Hand und hat müssen aus dem Lande fliehen vor Absalom.
10So ist Absalom, den wir über uns gesalbt hatten, gestorben im Streit. Warum seid ihr so nun still, daß ihr den König nicht wieder holet?
11Der König aber sandte zu Zadok und Abjathar, den Priestern, und ließ ihnen sagen: Redet mit den Ältesten in Juda und sprecht: Warum wollt ihr die letzten sein, den König wieder zu holen in sein Haus? (Denn die Rede des ganzen Israel war vor den König gekommen in sein Haus.)
12Ihr seid meine Brüder, mein Bein und mein Fleisch; warum wollt ihr denn die letzten sein, den König wieder zu holen?
13Und zu Amasa sprecht: Bist du nicht mein Bein und mein Fleisch? Gott tue mir dies und das, wo du nicht sollst sein Feldhauptmann vor mir dein Leben lang an Joabs Statt.
14Und er neigte das Herz aller Männer Juda's wie eines Mannes; und sie sandten hin zum König: Komm wieder, du und alle deine Knechte!
15Also kam der König wieder. Und da er an den Jordan kam, waren die Männer Juda's gen Gilgal gekommen, hinabzuziehen dem König entgegen, daß sie den König über den Jordan führten.
16Und Simei, der Sohn Geras, der Benjaminiter, der zu Bahurim wohnte, eilte und zog mit den Männern Juda's hinab, dem König David entgegen;
17und waren tausend Mann mit ihm von Benjamin, dazu auch Ziba, der Diener des Hauses Sauls, mit seinen fünfzehn Söhnen und zwanzig Knechten; und sie gingen durch den Jordan vor dem König hin;
18und die Fähre war hinübergegangen, daß sie das Gesinde des Königs hinüberführten und täten, was ihm gefiel. Simei aber, der Sohn Geras, fiel vor dem König nieder, da er über den Jordan fuhr,
19und sprach zum König: Mein Herr, rechne mir nicht zu die Missetat und gedenke nicht, daß dein Knecht dich beleidigte des Tages, da mein Herr, der König, aus Jerusalem ging, und der König nehme es nicht zu Herzen.
20Denn dein Knecht erkennt, daß ich gesündigt habe. Und siehe, ich bin heute zuerst gekommen unter dem ganzen Hause Joseph, daß ich meinen Herrn, dem König, entgegen herabzöge.
21Aber Abisai, der Zeruja Sohn, antwortete und sprach: Und Simei sollte darum nicht sterben, so er doch dem Gesalbten des HERRN geflucht hat?
22David aber sprach: Was habe ich mit euch zu schaffen, ihr Kinder der Zeruja, daß ihr mir heute wollt zum Satan werden? Sollte heute jemand sterben in Israel? Meinst du, ich wisse nicht, daß ich heute bin König geworden über Israel?
23Und der König sprach zu Simei: Du sollst nicht sterben. Und der König schwur ihm.
24Mephiboseth, der Sohn Sauls, kam auch herab, dem König entgegen. Und er hatte seine Füße und seinen Bart nicht gereinigt und seine Kleider nicht gewaschen von dem Tage an, da der König weggegangen war, bis an den Tag, da er mit Frieden kam.
25Da er nun von Jerusalem kam, dem König zu begegnen, sprach der König zu ihm: Warum bist du nicht mit mir gezogen, Mephiboseth?
26Und er sprach: Mein Herr König, mein Knecht hat mich betrogen. Denn dein Knecht gedachte, ich will einen Esel satteln und darauf reiten und zum König ziehen, denn dein Knecht ist lahm.
27Dazu hat er deinen Knecht angegeben vor meinem Herrn, dem König. Aber mein Herr, der König, ist wie ein Engel Gottes; tue, was dir wohl gefällt.
28Denn all meines Vaters Haus ist nichts gewesen als Leute des Todes vor meinem Herrn, dem König; so hast du deinen Knecht gesetzt unter die, so an deinem Tisch essen. Was habe ich weiter Gerechtigkeit oder weiter zu schreien zu dem König?
29Der König sprach zu ihm: Was redest du noch weiter von deinem Dinge? Ich habe es gesagt: Du und Ziba teilt den Acker miteinander.
30Mephiboseth sprach zum König: Er nehme ihn auch ganz dahin, nachdem mein Herr König mit Frieden heimgekommen ist.
31Und Barsillai, der Gileaditer, kam herab von Roglim und führte den König über den Jordan, daß er ihn über den Jordan geleitete.
32Und Barsillai war sehr alt, wohl achtzig Jahre, der hatte den König versorgt, als er zu Mahanaim war; denn er war ein Mann von großem Vermögen.
33Und der König sprach zu Barsillai: Du sollst mit mir hinüberziehen; ich will dich versorgen bei mir zu Jerusalem.
34Aber Barsillai sprach zum König: was ist's noch, das ich zu leben habe, daß ich mit dem König sollte hinauf gen Jerusalem ziehen?
35Ich bin heute achtzig Jahre alt. Wie sollte ich kennen, was gut oder böse ist, oder schmecken, was ich esse oder trinke, oder hören, was die Sänger oder Sängerinnen singen? Warum sollte dein Knecht meinem Herrn König weiter beschweren?
36Dein Knecht soll ein wenig gehen mit dem König über den Jordan. Warum will mir der König eine solche Vergeltung tun?
37Laß deinen Knecht umkehren, daß ich sterbe in meiner Stadt bei meines Vaters und meiner Mutter Grab. Siehe, da ist dein Knecht Chimham; den laß mit meinem Herrn König hinüberziehen, und tue ihm, was dir wohl gefällt.
38Der König sprach: Chimham soll mit mir hinüberziehen, und ich will ihm tun, was dir wohl gefällt; auch alles, was du von mir begehrst, will ich dir tun.
39Und da alles Volk über den Jordan war gegangen und der König auch, küßte der König den Barsillai und segnete ihn; und er kehrte wieder an seinen Ort.
40Und der König zog hinüber gen Gilgal, und Chimham zog mit ihm. Und alles Volk Juda hatte den König hinübergeführt; aber des Volkes Israel war nur die Hälfte da.
41Und siehe, da kamen alle Männer Israels zum König und sprachen zu ihm: Warum haben dich unsre Brüder, die Männer Juda's, gestohlen und haben den König und sein Haus über den Jordan geführt und alle Männer Davids mit ihm?
42Da antworteten die von Juda denen von Israel: Der König gehört uns nahe zu; was zürnt ihr darum? Meint ihr, daß wir von dem König Nahrung und Geschenke empfangen haben?
43So antworteten dann die von Israel denen von Juda und sprachen: Wir haben zehnmal mehr beim König, dazu auch bei David, denn ihr. Warum hast du mich denn so gering geachtet? Und haben wir nicht zuerst davon geredet, uns unsern König zu holen? Aber die von Juda redeten härter denn die von Israel.

1Y DIERON aviso á Joab: He aquí el rey llora, y hace duelo por Absalom.
2Y volvióse aquel día la victoria en luto para todo el pueblo; porque oyó decir el pueblo aquel día que el rey tenía dolor por su hijo.
3Entróse el pueblo aquel día en la ciudad escondidamente, como suele entrar á escondidas el pueblo avergonzado que ha huído de la batalla.
4Mas el rey, cubierto el rostro, clamaba en alta voz: ¡Hijo mío Absalom, Absalom, hijo mío, hijo mío!
5Y entrando Joab en casa al rey, díjole: Hoy has avergonzado el rostro de todos tus siervos, que han hoy librado tu vida, y la vida de tus hijos y de tus hijas, y la vida de tus mujeres, y la vida de tus concubinas,
6Amando á los que te aborrecen, y aborreciendo á los que te aman: porque hoy has declarado que nada te importan tus príncipes y siervos; pues hoy echo de ver que si Absalom viviera, bien que nosotros todos estuviéramos hoy muertos, entonces te contentaras.
7Levántate pues ahora, y sal fuera, y halaga á tus siervos: porque juro por Jehová, que si no sales, ni aun uno quede contigo esta noche; y de esto te pesará más que de todos los males que te han sobrevenido desde tu mocedad hasta ahora.
8Entonces se levantó el rey, y sentóse á la puerta; y fué declarado á todo el pueblo, diciendo: He aquí el rey está sentado á la puerta. Y vino todo el pueblo delante del rey; mas Israel había huído, cada uno á sus estancias.
9Y todo el pueblo porfiaba en todas las tribus de Israel, diciendo: El rey nos ha librado de mano de nuestros enemigos, y él nos ha salvado de mano de los Filisteos; y ahora había huído de la tierra por miedo de Absalom.
10Y Absalom, á quien habíamos ungido sobre nosotros, es muerto en la batalla. ¿Por qué pues os estáis ahora quedos en orden á hacer volver al rey?
11Y el rey David envió á Sadoc y á Abiathar sacerdotes, diciendo: Hablad á los ancianos de Judá y decidles: ¿Por qué seréis vosotros los postreros en volver el rey á su casa, ya que la palabra de todo Israel ha venido al rey de volverle á su casa?
12Vosotros sois mis hermanos; mis huesos y mi carne sois: ¿por qué pues seréis vosotros los postreros en volver al rey?
13Asimismo diréis á Amasa: ¿No eres tú también hueso mío y carne mía? Así me haga Dios, y así me añada, si no fueres general del ejército delante de mí para siempre, en lugar de Joab.
14Así inclinó el corazón de todos los varones de Judá, como el de un solo hombre, para que enviasen á decir al rey: Vuelve tú, y todos tus siervos.
15Volvió pues el rey, y vino hasta el Jordán. Y Judá vino á Gilgal, á recibir al rey y pasarlo el Jordán.
16Y Semei hijo de Gera, hijo de Benjamín, que era de Bahurim, dióse priesa á venir con los hombres de Judá á recibir al rey David;
17Y con él venían mil hombres de Benjamín; asimismo Siba criado de la casa de Saúl, con sus quince hijos y sus veinte siervos, los cuales pasaron el Jordán delante del rey.
18Atravesó después la barca para pasar la familia del rey, y para hacer lo que le pluguiera. Entonces Semei hijo de Gera se postró delante del rey cuando él había pasado el Jordán.
19Y dijo al rey: No me impute mi señor iniquidad, ni tengas memoria de los males que tu siervo hizo el día que mi señor el rey salió de Jerusalem, para guardarlos el rey en su corazón;
20Porque yo tu siervo conozco haber pecado, y he venido hoy el primero de toda la casa de José, para descender á recibir á mi señor el rey.
21Y Abisai hijo de Sarvia respondió y dijo: ¿No ha de morir por esto Semei, que maldijo al ungido de Jehová?
22David entonces dijo: ¿Qué tenéis vosotros conmigo, hijos de Sarvia, que me habéis de ser hoy adversarios? ¿ha de morir hoy alguno en Israel? ¿no conozco yo que hoy soy rey sobre Israel?
23Y dijo el rey á Semei: No morirás. Y el rey se lo juró.
24También Mephi-boseth hijo de Saúl descendió á recibir al rey: no había lavado sus pies, ni había cortado su barba, ni tampoco había lavado sus vestidos, desde el día que el rey salió hasta el día que vino en paz.
25Y luego que vino él á Jerusalem á recibir al rey, el rey le dijo: Mephi-boseth, ¿por qué no fuiste conmigo?
26Y él dijo: Rey señor mío, mi siervo me ha engañado; pues había tu siervo dicho: Enalbardaré un asno, y subiré en él, é iré al rey; porque tu siervo es cojo.
27Empero él revolvió á tu siervo delante de mi señor el rey; mas mi señor el rey es como un ángel de Dios: haz pues lo que bien te pareciere.
28Porque toda la casa de mi padre era digna de muerte delante de mi señor el rey, y tú pusiste á tu siervo entre los convidados de tu mesa. ¿Qué derecho pues tengo aún para quejarme más contra el rey?
29Y el rey le dijo: ¿Para qué hablas más palabras? Yo he determinado que tú y Siba partáis las tierras.
30Y Mephi-boseth dijo al rey: Y aun tómelas él todas, pues que mi señor el rey ha vuelto en paz á su casa.
31También Barzillai Galaadita descendió de Rogelim, y pasó el Jordán con el rey, para acompañarle de la otra parte del Jordán.
32Y era Barzillai muy viejo, de ochenta años, el cual había dado provisión al rey cuando estaba en Mahanaim, porque era hombre muy rico.
33Y el rey dijo á Barzillai: Pasa conmigo, y yo te daré de comer conmigo en Jerusalem.
34Mas Barzillai dijo al rey: ¿Cuántos son los días del tiempo de mi vida, para que yo suba con el rey á Jerusalem?
35Yo soy hoy día de edad de ochenta años, que ya no haré diferencia entre lo bueno y lo malo: ¿tomará gusto ahora tu siervo en lo que comiere ó bebiere? ¿oiré más la voz de los cantores y de las cantoras? ¿para qué, pues, sería aún tu siervo molesto á mi señor el rey?
36Pasará tu siervo un poco el Jordán con el rey: ¿por qué me ha de dar el rey tan grande recompensa?
37Yo te ruego que dejes volver á tu siervo, y que muera en mi ciudad, junto al sepulcro de mi padre y de mi madre. He aquí tu siervo Chimham; que pase él con mi señor el rey, y hazle lo que bien te pareciere.
38Y el rey dijo: Pues pase conmigo Chimham, y yo haré con él como bien te parezca: y todo lo que tú pidieres de mí, yo lo haré.
39Y todo el pueblo pasó el Jordán: y luego que el rey hubo también pasado, el rey besó á Barzillai, y bendíjolo; y él se volvió á su casa.
40El rey entonces pasó á Gilgal, y con él pasó Chimham; y todo el pueblo de Judá, con la mitad del pueblo de Israel, pasaron al rey.
41Y he aquí todos los varones de Israel vinieron al rey, y le dijeron: ¿Por qué los hombres de Judá, nuestros hermanos, te han llevado, y han hecho pasar el Jordán al rey y á su familia, y á todos los varones de David con él?
42Y todos los varones de Judá respondieron á todos los de Israel: Porque el rey es nuestro pariente. Mas ¿por qué os enojáis vosotros de eso? ¿hemos nosotros comido algo del rey? ¿hemos recibido de él algún don?
43Entonces respondieron los varones de Israel, y dijeron á los de Judá: Nosotros tenemos en el rey diez partes, y en el mismo David más que vosotros: ¿por qué pues nos habéis tenido en poco? ¿no hablamos nosotros primero en volver á nuestro rey? Y el razonamiento de los varones de Judá fué más fuerte que el de los varones de Israel.

1And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom.
2And the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say that day how the king was grieved for his son.
3And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.
4But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!
5And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;
6In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
7Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak comfortably unto thy servants: for I swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that befell thee from thy youth until now.
8Then the king arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, saying, Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent.
9And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom.
10And Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?
11And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.
12Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?
13And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.
14And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.
15So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.
16And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David.
17And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.
18And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;
19And said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
20For thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.
21But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?
22And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?
23Therefore the king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.
24And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.
25And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?
26And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame.
27And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.
28For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?
29And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land.
30And Mephibosheth said unto the king, Yea, let him take all, forasmuch as my lord the king is come again in peace unto his own house.
31And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
32Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.
33And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.
34And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?
35I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
36Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?
37Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
38And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.
39And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.
40Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.
41And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?
42And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?
43And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
World English Bible
1Joab was told, “Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.”
2The victory that day was turned into mourning among all the people, for the people heard it said that day, “The king grieves for his son.”
3The people sneaked into the city that day, as people who are ashamed steal away when they flee in battle.
4The king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, “My son Absalom, Absalom, my son, my son!”
5Joab came into the house to the king, and said, “Today you have shamed the faces of all your servants who today have saved your life, and the lives of your sons and of your daughters, and the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines;
6in that you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. For you have declared today that princes and servants are nothing to you. For today I perceive that if Absalom had lived and we had all died today, then it would have pleased you well.
7Now therefore arise, go out and speak to comfort your servants; for I swear by the LORD, if you don’t go out, not a man will stay with you this night. That would be worse to you than all the evil that has happened to you from your youth until now.”

13Say to Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my bone and my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if you aren’t captain of the army before me continually instead of Joab.’”
14He bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as one man, so that they sent to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.”
15So the king returned, and came to the Jordan. Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to bring the king over the Jordan.

18A ferry boat went to bring over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king when he had come over the Jordan.
19He said to the king, “Don’t let my lord impute iniquity to me, or remember that which your servant did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
20For your servant knows that I have sinned. Therefore behold, I have come today as the first of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.”
21But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’s anointed?”
22David said, “What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah, that you should be adversaries to me today? Shall any man be put to death today in Israel? For don’t I know that I am king over Israel today?”
23The king said to Shimei, “You will not die.” The king swore to him.
24Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king; and he had neither groomed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came home in peace.
25When he had come to Jerusalem to meet the king, the king said to him, “Why didn’t you go with me, Mephibosheth?”
26He answered, “My lord, O king, my servant deceived me. For your servant said, ‘I will saddle a donkey for myself, that I may ride on it and go with the king,’ because your servant is lame.
27He has slandered your servant to my lord the king, but my lord the king is as an angel of God. Therefore do what is good in your eyes.
28For all my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet you set your servant among those who ate at your own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should appeal any more to the king?”
29The king said to him, “Why do you speak any more of your matters? I say, you and Ziba divide the land.”
30Mephibosheth said to the king, “Yes, let him take all, because my lord the king has come in peace to his own house.”
31Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he went over the Jordan with the king to conduct him over the Jordan.
32Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even eighty years old. He had provided the king with sustenance while he stayed at Mahanaim, for he was a very great man.
33The king said to Barzillai, “Come over with me, and I will sustain you with me in Jerusalem.”
34Barzillai said to the king, “How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
35I am eighty years old, today. Can I discern between good and bad? Can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear the voice of singing men and singing women any more? Why then should your servant be a burden to my lord the king?
36Your servant will just go over the Jordan with the king. Why should the king repay me with such a reward?
37Please let your servant turn back again, that I may die in my own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold, your servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good to you.”
38The king answered, “Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good to you. Whatever you request of me, that I will do for you.”
39All the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over. Then the king kissed Barzillai and blessed him; and he returned to his own place.
40So the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimham went over with him. All the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel.
41Behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, “Why have our brothers the men of Judah stolen you away, and brought the king and his household, over the Jordan, and all David’s men with him?”
42All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is a close relative to us. Why then are you angry about this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king’s cost? Or has he given us any gift?”
43The men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, “We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more claim to David than you. Why then did you despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?” The words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
