Três dias mais tarde, veio um homem do exército israelita com as roupas rasgadas e terra sobre a cabeça, como sinal de tristeza. Ele inclinou-se diante de Davi com o rosto no chão, como sinal de respeito.
Y al tercer día acaeció, que vino uno del campo de Saúl, rotos sus vestidos, y tierra sobre su cabeza: y llegando á David, postróse en tierra, é hizo reverencia.
It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

“De onde vem você?”, Davi perguntou. “Eu escapei do acampamento israelita”, o homem respondeu.

And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.
David said to him, “Where do you come from?” He said to him, “I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.”
“O que foi que aconteceu?”, Davi perguntou. “Diga-me como foi a batalha”. E o homem respondeu: “Todo o nosso exército fugiu. Muitos homens estão mortos e feridos no campo, e Saul e seu filho Jônatas foram mortos”.
Y David le dijo: ¿Qué ha acontecido? ruégote que me lo digas. Y él respondió: El pueblo huyó de la batalla, y también muchos del pueblo cayeron y son muertos: también Saúl y Jonathán su hijo murieron.
And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
David said to him, “How did it go? Please tell me.” He answered, “The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people also have fallen and are dead. Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”
Então Davi perguntou ao homem que havia trazido a notícia: “Como é que você sabe que eles estão mortos?”
Y dijo David á aquel mancebo que le daba las nuevas: ¿Cómo sabes que Saúl es muerto, y Jonathán su hijo?
And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

“Porque eu estava no monte Gilboa e vi que Saul estava apoiado sobre sua lança, e os carros inimigos e seus cavaleiros estavam chegando cada vez mais perto dele, cercando-o por todos os lados.
Y el mancebo que le daba las nuevas respondió: Casualmente vine al monte de Gilboa, y hallé á Saúl que estaba recostado sobre su lanza, y venían tras él carros y gente de á caballo.
And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

Y él me volvió á decir: Yo te ruego que te pongas sobre mí, y me mates, porque me toman angustias, y toda mi alma está aún en mí.
He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.
He said to me, ‘Please stand beside me, and kill me, for anguish has taken hold of me because my life lingers in me.’
“Então eu me aproximei e o matei, porque sabia que ele não tinha condições de sobreviver. Depois tomei a sua coroa e uma das suas pulseiras para trazer aqui ao meu senhor”.

“Por que você matou o rei escolhido do Senhor?”, perguntou Davi.
Y díjole David: ¿Cómo no tuviste temor de extender tu mano para matar al ungido de Jehová?
And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?
David said to him, “Why were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?”
Então Davi disse a um dos seus soldados: “Mate esse homem!” E o soldado atacou e matou o amalequita.
Entonces llamó David uno de los mancebos, y díjole: Llega, y mátalo. Y él lo hirió, y murió.
And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

Davi havia dito ao amalequita: “Você morre por sua própria condenação, pois você mesmo confessou que matou o rei escolhido do Senhor”.
Y David le dijo: Tu sangre sea sobre tu cabeza, pues que tu boca atestiguó contra ti, diciendo: Yo maté al ungido de Jehová.
And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’s anointed.
David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have slain the LORD’s anointed.’”
Davi chorou muito, e mais tarde escreveu um hino triste para Saul e Jônatas,
Y endechó David á Saúl y á Jonathán su hijo con esta endecha.
And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:
