Después de esto, David le preguntó al Señor: ―¿Regresaré a alguna de las ciudades de Judá? ―Sí —le respondió el Señor. ―¿A qué ciudad debo ir? —volvió a preguntar David. ―A Hebrón —le respondió el Señor.
DESPUÉS de esto aconteció que David consultó á Jehová, diciendo: ¿Subiré á alguna de las ciudades de Judá? Y Jehová le respondió: Sube. Y David tornó á decir: ¿A dónde subiré? Y él le dijo: A Hebrón.
And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
After this, David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” The LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”
Entonces David se fue a Hebrón con sus esposas Ajinoán la jezrelita y Abigaíl, la viuda de Nabal de Carmel.
Y David subió allá, y con él sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam Jezreelita y Abigail, la que fué mujer de Nabal del Carmelo.
So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.

También se llevó a los hombres que lo acompañaban, junto con sus familias, y se establecieron en Hebrón y en las aldeas vecinas.

les envió este mensaje: «Que el Señor los bendiga por haber sido leales al rey y por haberle dado honrosa sepultura.
Y envió David mensajeros á los de Jabes de Galaad, diciéndoles: Benditos seáis vosotros de Jehová, que habéis hecho esta misericordia con vuestro señor Saúl en haberle dado sepultura.
And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

Que el Señor los recompense fielmente y les reconfirme su amor. Yo también tendré en cuenta el bien que ustedes han hecho.
Ahora pues, Jehová haga con vosotros misericordia y verdad; y yo también os haré bien por esto que habéis hecho.

Les pido que se animen y sean valientes, pues aunque su señor Saúl ha muerto, la tribu de Judá me ha ungido como su rey».
Esfuércense pues ahora vuestras manos, y sed valientes; pues que muerto Saúl vuestro señor, los de la casa de Judá me han ungido por rey sobre ellos.

Pero Abner hijo de Ner, jefe del ejército de Saúl, se llevó a Isboset hijo de Saúl a Majanayin.

Allí lo hizo rey de Galaad, de Guesurí, de Jezrel, de Efraín, de Benjamín y de todo el resto de Israel.

Joab hijo de Sarvia salió con los soldados de David a hacerle frente. Llegaron junto al estanque de Gabaón y se colocaron frente a frente, a ambos lados del estanque.

Abner le dijo a Joab: ―Escojamos a nuestros mejores guerreros para que se enfrenten delante de nosotros. ―Está muy bien —respondió Joab.

Así que doce jóvenes soldados benjaminitas de Isboset y doce de los soldados de David salieron a pelear cuerpo a cuerpo.

Cada uno tomó a su oponente por los cabellos y le clavó la espada en el costado, de modo que los veinticuatro murieron. El lugar se conoce desde entonces como «Campo de la Espada».

And there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

Los hermanos de Joab, Abisay y Asael, estaban también en la batalla. Asael, que podía correr tan rápido como una gacela,

se lanzó en persecución de Abner, y no lo dejó escapar.
El cual Asael siguió á Abner, yendo tras de él sin apartarse á diestra ni á siniestra.
And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

Cuando Abner miró hacia atrás y lo vio venir, le dijo: ―¿Eres tú, Asael? ―Sí —respondió—, soy yo.
Y Abner miró atrás, y dijo: ¿No eres tú Asael? Y él respondió: Sí.
Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” He answered, “It is.”
―¡Deja de perseguirme! —le dijo Abner—. Es mejor que busques a otro a quien le puedas arrebatar sus armas. Pero Asael continuó persiguiéndolo.
Entonces Abner le dijo: Apártate á la derecha ó á la izquierda, y agárrate alguno de los mancebos, y toma para ti sus despojos. Pero Asael no quiso apartarse de en pos de él.
And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
Abner said to him, “Turn away to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor.” But Asahel would not turn away from following him.
―¡Retírate! —le volvió a gritar Abner—. Si no dejas de perseguirme tendré que matarte, ¿y con qué le voy a salir después a tu hermano Joab?
Y Abner tornó á decir á Asael: Apártate de en pos de mí, porque te heriré derribándote en tierra, y después ¿cómo levantaré mi rostro á tu hermano Joab?
And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn away from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I look Joab your brother in the face?”
Pero como Asael no le hizo caso, Abner lo atravesó con la punta de su lanza, a la altura de la quinta costilla, y le salió por la espalda. Asael cayó en tierra y murió. Todos los que pasaban por allí se detenían a mirarlo.
Y no queriendo él irse, hiriólo Abner con el regatón de la lanza por la quinta costilla, y salióle la lanza por las espaldas, y cayó allí, y murió en aquel mismo sitio. Y todos los que venían por aquel lugar donde Asael había caído y estaba muerto, se paraban.
Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
However, he refused to turn away. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there and died in the same place. As many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
Entonces Joab y Abisay se lanzaron en persecución de Abner. El sol se estaba poniendo cuando llegaron a la colina de Amá, cerca de Guiaj, junto al camino que va al desierto de Gabaón.
Mas Joab y Abisai siguieron á Abner; y púsoseles el sol cuando llegaron al collado de Amma, que está delante de Gía, junto al camino del desierto de Gabaón.

y Abner le gritó a Joab: ―¿Hasta cuándo seguiremos matándonos, siendo hermanos? ¿No te das cuenta de lo amarga que resultará la victoria para cualquiera de los dos? ¿Qué esperas para ordenar a tus tropas que dejen de perseguir a sus hermanos?
Y Abner dió voces á Joab, diciendo: ¿Consumirá la espada perpetuamente? ¿no sabes tú que al cabo se sigue amargura? ¿hasta cuándo no has de decir al pueblo que se vuelvan de seguir á sus hermanos?
Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”
―Juro por Dios que si no hubieras dicho esto, mis hombres los habrían perseguido a ustedes hasta el amanecer —le respondió Joab.
Y Joab respondió: Vive Dios que si no hubieras hablado, ya desde esta mañana el pueblo hubiera dejado de seguir á sus hermanos.
And Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

Acto seguido, Joab hizo sonar las trompetas, y sus hombres dejaron de perseguir a los de Israel.

Aquella noche, Abner y sus hombres se retiraron por el valle del Jordán, cruzaron el río, atravesaron la región de Bitrón y llegaron a Majanayin.
Y Abner y los suyos caminaron por la campiña toda aquella noche, y pasando el Jordán cruzaron por todo Bitrón, y llegaron á Mahanaim.

Joab regresó y reunió todo su ejército. Al contar su tropa, se dio cuenta de que, además de Asael, había perdido a diecinueve soldados más.

And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.

Pero Abner había perdido trescientos sesenta soldados, todos de la tribu de Benjamín.
Mas los siervos de David hirieron de los de Benjamín y de los de Abner, trescientos y sesenta hombres, que murieron. Tomaron luego á Asael, y sepultáronlo en el sepulcro de su padre en Beth-lehem.
But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.

Joab y los suyos llevaron el cuerpo de Asael a Belén y lo sepultaron junto a su padre. Luego viajaron toda la noche y llegaron a Hebrón al despuntar el día.
