Abner, se retournant, lui dit: “Est-ce bien toi, Assahel? -C’est moi”, répondit-il.

And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.

Abner insista en disant à Assahel: “Eloigne-toi de moi. Pourquoi veux-tu que je te renverse mort à terre, et comment oserais-je ensuite regarder en face ton frère Joab?”
Y Abner tornó á decir á Asael: Apártate de en pos de mí, porque te heriré derribándote en tierra, y después ¿cómo levantaré mi rostro á tu hermano Joab?
And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?
Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn away from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I look Joab your brother in the face?”
Comme il refusait de s’éloigner, Abner le frappa du revers de sa lance, qui l’atteignit dans l’aine et ressortit par derrière; il tomba et mourut sur place. Et tous ceux qui arrivaient à l’endroit où Assahel était tombé mort s’y arrêtaient.

Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

Par le Dieu vivant! répondit Joab, si tu n’avais parlé, ils se seraient, dès le matin, séparés les uns des autres.”
