Esto fue el comienzo de una larga guerra entre los seguidores de Saúl y los de David. Cada día David se iba afirmando en el poder, mientras que el reino de Saúl se debilitaba cada vez más.
Y HUBO larga guerra entre la casa de Saúl y la casa de David; mas David se iba fortificando, y la casa de Saúl iba en disminución.

Aprovechando la posición en que se encontraba, se acostó con una de las concubinas de Saúl, una mujer llamada Rizpa, hija de Ayá. Cuando Isboset le llamó la atención por esto,

Abner se enfureció y le gritó: ―¿Soy yo un perro de Judá para ser tratado de esta manera? Después de todo lo que he hecho por ti y por tu padre, no entregándolos a David, ¿ahora me reprochas por una simple cuestión de faldas?
Y enojóse Abner en gran manera por las palabras de Is-boseth, y dijo: ¿Soy yo cabeza de perros respecto de Judá? Yo he hecho hoy misericordia con la casa de Saúl tu padre, con sus hermanos, y con sus amigos, y no te he entregado en las manos de David: ¿y tú me haces hoy cargo del pecado de esta mujer?
Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman?
Then Abner was very angry about Ishbosheth’s words, and said, “Am I a dog’s head that belongs to Judah? Today I show kindness to your father Saul’s house, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David; and yet you charge me today with a fault concerning this woman!
¡Que Dios me mande el peor de los castigos si, de aquí en adelante, no hago todo lo posible por quitarte todo el reino, desde Dan hasta Berseba, para dárselo a David! ¡Así se cumplirá lo que el Señor le juró a David!
Así haga Dios á Abner y así le añada, si como ha jurado Jehová á David no hiciere yo así con él,

Isboset no se atrevió a responder, porque le tenía miedo a Abner.
Y él no pudo responder palabra á Abner, porque le temía.

Entonces Abner envió unos mensajeros a David con el siguiente recado: «Le propongo que haga un pacto conmigo, y yo me comprometo a hacer todo lo posible para que todos los israelitas lo acepten como rey, pues, en realidad, toda la tierra de Israel le pertenece a usted».
Y envió Abner mensajeros á David de su parte, diciendo: ¿Cúya es la tierra? Y que le dijesen: Haz alianza conmigo, y he aquí que mi mano será contigo para volver á ti á todo Israel.
And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee.

«De acuerdo —respondió David—, pero no negociaré contigo a menos que me traigas a mi esposa Mical, la hija de Saúl».
Y David dijo: Bien; yo haré contigo alianza: mas una cosa te pido, y es, que no me vengas á ver sin que primero traigas á Michâl la hija de Saúl, cuando vinieres á verme.
And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
David said, “Good. I will make a treaty with you, but one thing I require of you. That is, you will not see my face unless you first bring Michal, Saul’s daughter, when you come to see my face.”
David envió también este mensaje a Isboset: «Devuélveme a mi esposa Mical, porque yo la compré con la vida de cien filisteos».
Después de esto envió David mensajeros á Is-boseth hijo de Saúl, diciendo: Restitúyeme á mi mujer Michâl, la cual yo desposé conmigo por cien prepucios de Filisteos.
And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

Abner habló también con los jefes de la tribu de Benjamín. Fue después a Hebrón e informó a David del éxito de las conversaciones con el pueblo de Israel y de Benjamín.

Veinte hombres lo acompañaron, y David los agasajó con una fiesta.

No hacía mucho que Abner había salido, cuando Joab y algunos de los soldados de David regresaron de una incursión trayendo consigo un gran botín.

Cuando le informaron a Joab que Abner hijo de Ner había estado hablando con el rey, y que este lo había despedido en paz,

se presentó rápidamente ante el rey y le dijo: «¿Qué ha hecho? ¿Por qué ha permitido que Abner regrese en paz a su casa? Usted bien sabe que todo lo que él le ha dicho es mentira. Todo lo que quiere es enterarse de sus planes y movimientos».
Entonces Joab vino al rey, y díjole: ¿Qué has hecho? He aquí habíase venido Abner á ti: ¿por qué pues lo dejaste que se fuése?
Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?

¿Sabes tú que Abner hijo de Ner ha venido para engañarte, y á saber tu salida y tu entrada, y por entender todo lo que tú haces?
Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.
You know Abner the son of Ner. He came to deceive you, and to know your going out and your coming in, and to know all that you do.”
Luego Joab envió mensajeros para que dieran alcance a Abner y le pidieran que regresara. Lo encontraron junto al pozo de Sira, y él regresó con ellos. Pero David nada sabía de esto.

And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.

And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

Caiga sobre la cabeza de Joab, y sobre toda la casa de su padre; que nunca falte de la casa de Joab quien padezca flujo, ni leproso, ni quien ande con báculo, ni quien muera á cuchillo, ni quien tenga falta de pan.
Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread.

Joab, pues, y su hermano Abisay mataron a Abner para vengar la muerte de su hermano Asael, a quien Abner mató en la batalla de Gabaón.

David se había negado a comer en el día del funeral, y todos le rogaban que se sirviera algo de comida. Pero David había jurado que no comería nada hasta la puesta del sol. Esto agradó a su pueblo; en verdad, todo lo que el rey hacia agradaba al pueblo.

A pesar de que he sido nombrado como rey, nada pude hacer para evitar que los hijos de Sarvia asesinaran a Abner. ¡Que el Señor le dé su castigo a quien cometió tal maldad!».

And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.
