Alguien que se ha alistado en la milicia de Dios no debe embarazarse con negocios del siglo, a fin de agradar a aquel que le alistó y escogió por soldado.
Tú pues, sufre trabajos como fiel soldado de Jesucristo.
Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
Así mismo ni el que combate en la palestra, o en los juegos públicos, es coronado si no lidiare según las leyes.
Ninguno que milita se embaraza en los negocios de la vida; á fin de agradar á aquel que lo tomó por soldado.
No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
No soldier on duty entangles himself in the affairs of life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.
El labrador, para recibir los frutos, es necesario que trabaje primero.
Y aun también el que lidia, no es coronado si no lidiare legítimamente.
And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
Also, if anyone competes in athletics, he isn’t crowned unless he has competed by the rules.
Entiende bien lo que digo, que no necesito añadir más, porque Dios te dará en todo inteligencia.
El labrador, para recibir los frutos, es menester que trabaje primero.
The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.
The farmer who labors must be the first to get a share of the crops.
Acuérdate que nuestro Señor Jesucristo, del linaje de David, resucitó de entre los muertos, según la buena nueva que predico,
Considera lo que digo; y el Señor te dé entendimiento en todo.
Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

por el cual estoy yo padeciendo hasta verme entre cadenas, como malhechor; si bien la palabra de Dios no está encadenada.
Acuérdate que Jesucristo, el cual fué de la simiente de David, resucitó de los muertos conforme á mi evangelio;
Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

Por tanto, todo lo sufro por amor de los escogidos, a fin de que consigan también ellos la salvación, adquirida por Jesucristo, con la gloria celestial.
En el que sufro trabajo, hasta las prisiones á modo de malhechor; mas la palabra de Dios no está presa.
Where in I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

si no creemos, o fuéremos infieles, él permanece siempre fiel, no puede desmentirse a sí mismo.
Si sufrimos, también reinaremos con él: si negáremos, él también nos negará:
If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he also will deny us.
Estas cosas has de amonestar, poniendo a Dios por testigo. Huye de contiendas de palabras, porque de nada sirven, sino para pervertir a los oyentes.
Si fuéremos infieles, él permanece fiel: no se puede negar á sí mismo.
If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he can not deny himself.
If we are faithless, he remains faithful; for he can’t deny himself.”
Ponte en estado de comparecer delante de Dios como un ministro digno de su aprobación, que nada hace de que tenga motivo de avergonzarse, y que sabe dispensar bien la palabra de la verdad.
Recuérdales esto, protestando delante del Señor que no contiendan en palabras, lo cual para nada aprovecha, antes trastorna á los oyentes.
Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

Evita por tanto y ataja los profanos y vanos discursos de los seductores, porque contribuyen mucho a la impiedad;
Procura con diligencia presentarte á Dios aprobado, como obrero que no tiene de qué avergonzarse, que traza bien la palabra de verdad.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn’t need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.
y la plática de éstos cunde como gangrena, del número de los cuales son Himeneo y Fileto,
Mas evita profanas y vanas parlerías; porque muy adelante irán en la impiedad.
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

que se han descarriado de la verdad, diciendo que la resurrección está ya hecha, y han pervertido la fe de varios.

Que se han descaminado de la verdad, diciendo que la resurrección es ya hecha, y trastornan la fe de algunos.

Por lo demás, en una casa grande no sólo hay vasos de oro y de plata, sino también de madera y de barro, y de ellos unos son para usos decentes, otros para usos viles y bajos. Así sucede en la Iglesia.
Pero el fundamento de Dios está firme, teniendo este sello: Conoce el Señor á los que son suyos; y: Apártese de iniquidad todo aquel que invoca el nombre de Cristo.

Por tanto, huye de las pasiones juveniles, y sigue la justicia, la fe, la caridad y la paz con aquellos que invocan al Señor con limpio corazón y son capaces de ella.
Así que, si alguno se limpiare de estas cosas, será vaso para honra, santificado, y útil para los usos del Señor, y aparejado para todo buena obra.
If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Las cuestiones necias, y que nada contribuyen a la instrucción, evítalas, sabiendo que son un manantial de alterados.
Huye también los deseos juveniles; y sigue la justicia, la fe, la caridad, la paz, con los que invocan al Señor de puro corazón.
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Al siervo de Dios no le conviene o cae bien altercar, sino ser manso con todos, propio para instruir, paciente,
Empero las cuestiones necias y sin sabiduría desecha, sabiendo que engendran contiendas.
But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

que reprenda con modesta dulzura a los que contradicen a la verdad, por si quizá Dios los trae a penitencia para que conozcan la verdad,

And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
The Lord’s servant must not quarrel, but be gentle toward all, able to teach, patient,
y se desenreden de los lazos del diablo, que los tiene presos a su arbitrio.
Que con mansedumbre corrija á los que se oponen: si quizá Dios les dé que se arrepientan para conocer la verdad,
In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
in gentleness correcting those who oppose him. Perhaps God may give them repentance leading to a full knowledge of the truth,
Mas has de saber esto, que en los días postreros o hasta el fin del mundo sobrevendrán tiempos peligrosos.
Y se zafen del lazo del diablo, en que están cautivos á voluntad de él.
