1El anciano, al amado Gayo, a quien ama de veras.
2Querido hermano, ruego a Dios que en todo te vaya bien y que tu cuerpo esté tan saludable como lo está tu alma.
3He tenido la alegría de enterarme, por medio de algunos hermanos que vinieron, de que vives fiel a la verdad.
4Para mí no hay mayor alegría que la de oír que mis hijos viven de acuerdo con la verdad.
5Amado hermano, haces muy bien al ayudar a los hermanos y en especial a los que llegan de otras tierras.
6Ellos han hablado delante de la iglesia de tu amor. Me agradaría que los ayudes a seguir su viaje, como Dios manda.
7Ellos viajan al servicio del Señor y no han aceptado ningún tipo de ayuda de los que no conocen a Dios.
8Por eso, nosotros debemos ayudarlos, porque al hacerlo colaboramos con ellos en la verdad.
9Hace un tiempo escribí a la iglesia sobre este asunto, pero Diótrefes, a quien le encanta ser el primero en todo, no reconoce la autoridad que tengo.
10Por eso, cuando yo vaya, le voy a llamar la atención por su mala conducta y por los chismes y las cosas malas que anda diciendo de nosotros. No sólo se niega a recibir a los hermanos que por allí pasan, sino que prohíbe que los demás lo hagan, amenazándolos con expulsarlos de la iglesia.
11Amado, no imites los malos ejemplos. Imita sólo lo bueno. El que hace lo bueno es de Dios; el que hace el mal no ha visto a Dios.
12Todos, y aun la verdad misma, hablan bien de Demetrio. Yo opino de él igual que los demás, y ya sabes que digo la verdad.
13Tengo muchas cosas más que decirte, pero no quiero hacerlo por carta.
14Espero verte pronto y entonces hablaremos en persona.

1EL anciano al muy amado Gaio, al cual yo amo en verdad.
2Amado, yo deseo que tú seas prosperado en todas cosas, y que tengas salud, así como tu alma está en prosperidad.
3Ciertamente me gocé mucho cuando vinieron los hermanos y dieron testimonio de tu verdad, así como tú andas en la verdad.
4No tengo yo mayor gozo que éste, el oir que mis hijos andan en la verdad.
5Amado, fielmente haces todo lo que haces para con los hermanos, y con los extranjeros,
6Los cuales han dado testimonio de tu amor en presencia de la iglesia: á los cuales si ayudares como conviene según Dios, harás bien.
7Porque ellos partieron por amor de su nombre, no tomando nada de los Gentiles.
8Nosotros, pues, debemos recibir á los tales, para que seamos cooperadores á la verdad.
9Yo he escrito á la iglesia: mas Diótrefes, que ama tener el primado entre ellos, no nos recibe.
10Por esta causa, si yo viniere, recordaré las obras que hace parlando con palabras maliciosas contra nosotros; y no contento con estas cosas, no recibe á los hermanos, y prohibe á los que los quieren recibir, y los echa de la iglesia.
11Amado, no sigas lo que es malo, sino lo que es bueno. El que hace bien es de Dios: mas el que hace mal, no ha visto á Dios.
12Todos dan testimonio de Demetrio, y aun la misma verdad: y también nosotros damos testimonio; y vosotros habéis conocido que nuestro testimonio es verdadero.
13Yo tenía muchas cosas que escribirte; empero no quiero escribirte por tinta y pluma:
14Porque espero verte en breve, y hablaremos boca á boca. Paz sea contigo. Los amigos te saludan. Saluda tú á los amigos por nombre.

1The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
2Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
3For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
6Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
7Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
8We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
9I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
10Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
11Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
12Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
13I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
14But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.

2Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.

5Beloved, you do a faithful work in whatever you accomplish for those who are brothers and strangers.
6They have testified about your love before the assembly. You will do well to send them forward on their journey in a way worthy of God,
7because for the sake of the Name they went out, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
8We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
9I wrote to the assembly, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, doesn’t accept what we say.
10Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words. Not content with this, he doesn’t receive the brothers himself, and those who would, he forbids and throws out of the assembly.
11Beloved, don’t imitate that which is evil, but that which is good. He who does good is of God. He who does evil hasn’t seen God.
12Demetrius has the testimony of all, and of the truth itself; yes, we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true.
13I had many things to write to you, but I am unwilling to write to you with ink and pen;
14but I hope to see you soon. Then we will speak face to face. Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
