1Es geschah aber, während Apollos in Korinth war, daß Paulus, nachdem er die oberen Gegenden durchzogen hatte, nach Ephesus kam. Und er fand etliche Jünger
2und sprach zu ihnen: Habt ihr den Heiligen Geist empfangen, nachdem ihr gläubig geworden seid? Sie aber [sprachen] zu ihm: Wir haben nicht einmal gehört, ob der Heilige Geist da ist.
3Und er sprach: Worauf seid ihr denn getauft worden? Sie aber sagten: Auf die Taufe Johannes'.
4Paulus aber sprach: Johannes hat mit der Taufe der Buße getauft, indem er dem Volke sagte, daß sie an den glauben sollten, der nach ihm käme, das ist an Jesum.
5Als sie es aber gehört hatten, wurden sie auf den Namen des Herrn Jesus getauft;
6und als Paulus ihnen die Hände aufgelegt hatte, kam der Heilige Geist auf sie, und sie redeten in Sprachen und weissagten.
7Es waren aber insgesamt etwa zwölf Männer.
8Er ging aber in die Synagoge und sprach freimütig drei Monate lang, indem er sich unterredete und sie von den Dingen des Reiches Gottes überzeugte.
9Als aber etliche sich verhärteten und nicht glaubten und vor der Menge übel redeten von dem Wege, trennte er sich von ihnen und sonderte die Jünger ab, indem er sich täglich in der Schule des Tyrannus unterredete.
10Dies aber geschah zwei Jahre lang, so daß alle, die in Asien wohnten, sowohl Juden als Griechen, das Wort des Herrn hörten.
11Und nicht gemeine Wunderwerke tat Gott durch die Hände des Paulus,
12so daß man sogar Schweißtücher oder Schürzen von seinem Leibe weg auf die Kranken legte, und die Krankheiten von ihnen wichen und die bösen Geister ausfuhren.
13Aber auch etliche von den umherziehenden jüdischen Beschwörern unternahmen es, über die, welche böse Geister hatten, den Namen des Herrn Jesus auszurufen, indem sie sagten: Ich beschwöre euch bei dem Jesus, welchen Paulus predigt!
14Es waren aber gewisse Söhne eines jüdischen Hohenpriesters Skeva, ihrer sieben, die dies taten.
15Der böse Geist aber antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Jesum kenne ich, und von Paulus weiß ich; aber ihr, wer seid ihr?
16Und der Mensch, in welchem der böse Geist war, sprang auf sie los und bemeisterte sich beider und überwältigte sie, so daß sie nackt und verwundet aus jenem Hause entflohen.
17Dies aber wurde allen bekannt, sowohl Juden als Griechen, die zu Ephesus wohnten; und Furcht fiel auf sie alle, und der Name des Herrn Jesus wurde erhoben.
18Viele aber von denen, die gläubig geworden waren, kamen und bekannten und verkündigten ihre Taten.
19Viele aber von denen, welche vorwitzige Künste getrieben hatten, trugen die Bücher zusammen und verbrannten sie vor allen; und sie berechneten den Wert derselben und fanden ihn zu fünfzigtausend Stück Silber.
20Also wuchs das Wort des Herrn mit Macht und nahm überhand.
21Als dies aber erfüllt war, setzte sich Paulus in seinem Geiste vor, nachdem er Macedonien und Achaja durchzogen habe, nach Jerusalem zu reisen, und sprach: Nachdem ich dort gewesen bin, muß ich auch Rom sehen.
22Er sandte aber zwei von denen, die ihm dienten, Timotheus und Erastus, nach Macedonien, und er selbst verweilte eine Zeitlang in Asien.
23Es entstand aber um jene Zeit ein nicht geringer Lärm betreffs des Weges.
24Denn ein Gewisser, mit Namen Demetrius, ein Silberschmied, der silberne Tempel der Artemis machte, verschaffte den Künstlern nicht geringen Erwerb;
25und nachdem er diese samt den Arbeitern derartiger Dinge versammelt hatte, sprach er: Männer, ihr wisset, daß aus diesem Erwerb unser Wohlstand ist;
26und ihr sehet und höret, daß dieser Paulus nicht allein von Ephesus, sondern beinahe von ganz Asien eine große Volksmenge überredet und abgewandt hat, indem er sagt, daß das keine Götter seien, die mit Händen gemacht werden.
27Nicht allein aber ist für uns Gefahr, daß dieses Geschäft in Verachtung komme, sondern auch, daß der Tempel der großen Göttin Artemis für nichts geachtet und auch ihre herrliche Größe, welche ganz Asien und der Erdkreis verehrt, vernichtet werde.
28Als sie aber das hörten und voll Wut wurden, schrieen sie und sagten: Groß ist die Artemis der Epheser!
29Und die [ganze] Stadt geriet in Verwirrung; und sie stürmten einmütig nach dem Theater, indem sie die Macedonier Gajus und Aristarchus, die Reisegefährten des Paulus, mit fortrissen.
30Als aber Paulus unter das Volk gehen wollte, ließen die Jünger es ihm nicht zu.
31Und auch etliche der Asiarchen, die seine Freunde waren, sandten zu ihm und baten ihn, sich nicht nach dem Theater zu begeben.
32Die einen nun schrieen dieses, die anderen jenes; denn die Versammlung war in Verwirrung, und die meisten wußten nicht, weshalb sie zusammengekommen waren.
33Sie zogen aber Alexander aus der Volksmenge hervor, indem die Juden ihn hervorstießen. Alexander aber winkte mit der Hand und wollte sich vor dem Volke verantworten.
34Als sie aber erkannten, daß er ein Jude war, erhob sich eine Stimme aus aller Mund, und sie schrieen bei zwei Stunden: Groß ist die Artemis der Epheser!
35Als aber der Stadtschreiber die Volksmenge beruhigt hatte, spricht er: Männer von Ephesus, welcher Mensch ist denn, der nicht wisse, daß die Stadt der Epheser eine Tempelpflegerin der großen Artemis und des vom Himmel gefallenen Bildes ist?
36Da nun dieses unwidersprechlich ist, so geziemt es euch, ruhig zu sein und nichts Übereiltes zu tun.
37Denn ihr habt diese Männer hergeführt, die weder Tempelräuber sind, noch eure Göttin lästern.
38Wenn nun Demetrius und die Künstler mit ihm wider jemand eine Sache haben, so werden Gerichtstage gehalten, und es sind Statthalter da; mögen sie einander verklagen.
39Wenn ihr aber wegen anderer Dinge ein Gesuch habt, so wird es in der gesetzlichen Versammlung erledigt werden.
40Denn wir sind auch in Gefahr, wegen heute des Aufruhrs angeklagt zu werden, indem es keine Ursache gibt, weswegen wir uns über diesen Auflauf werden verantworten können.
41Und als er dies gesagt hatte, entließ er die Versammlung.

1Y ACONTECIÓ que entre tanto que Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo, andadas las regiones superiores, vino á Efeso, y hallando ciertos discípulos,
2Díjoles: ¿Habéis recibido el Espíritu Santo después que creísteis? Y ellos le dijeron: Antes ni aun hemos oído si hay Espíritu Santo.
3Entonces dijo: ¿En qué pues sois bautizados? Y ellos dijeron: En el bautismo de Juan.
4Y dijo Pablo: Juan bautizó con bautismo de arrepentimiento, diciendo al pueblo que creyesen en el que había de venir después de él, es á saber, en Jesús el Cristo.
5Oído que hubieron esto, fueron bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús.
6Y habiéndoles impuesto Pablo las manos, vino sobre ellos el Espíritu Santo; y hablaban en lenguas, y profetizaban.
7Y eran en todos como unos doce hombres.
8Y entrando él dentro de la sinagoga, hablaba libremente por espacio de tres meses, disputando y persuadiendo del reino de Dios.
9Mas endureciéndose algunos y no creyendo, maldiciendo el Camino delante de la multitud, apartándose Pablo de ellos separó á los discípulos, disputando cada día en la escuela de un cierto Tyranno.
10Y esto fué por espacio de dos años; de manera que todos los que habitaban en Asia, Judíos y Griegos, oyeron la palabra del Señor Jesús.
11Y hacía Dios singulares maravillas por manos de Pablo:
12De tal manera que aun se llevaban sobre los enfermos los sudarios y los pañuelos de su cuerpo, y las enfermedades se iban de ellos, y los malos espíritus salían de ellos.
13Y algunos de los Judíos, exorcistas vagabundos, tentaron á invocar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los que tenían espíritus malos, diciendo: Os conjuro por Jesús, el que Pablo predica.
14Y había siete hijos de un tal Sceva, Judío, príncipe de los sacerdotes, que hacían esto.
15Y respondiendo el espíritu malo, dijo: A Jesús conozco, y sé quién es Pablo: mas vosotros ¿quiénes sois?
16Y el hombre en quien estaba el espíritu malo, saltando en ellos, y enseñoreándose de ellos, pudo más que ellos, de tal manera que huyeron de aquella casa desnudos y heridos.
17Y esto fué notorio á todos, así Judíos como Griegos, los que habitaban en Efeso: y cayó temor sobre todos ellos, y era ensalzado el nombre del Señor Jesús.
18Y muchos de los que habían creído, venían, confesando y dando cuenta de sus hechos.
19Asimismo muchos de los que habían practicado vanas artes, trajeron los libros, y los quemaron delante de todos; y echada la cuenta del precio de ellos, hallaron ser cincuenta mil denarios.
20Así crecía poderosamente la palabra del Señor, y prevalecía.
21Y acabadas estas cosas, se propuso Pablo en espíritu partir á Jerusalem, después de andada Macedonia y Acaya, diciendo: Después que hubiere estado allá, me será menester ver también á Roma.
22Y enviando á Macedonia á dos de los que le ayudaban, Timoteo y Erasto, él se estuvo por algún tiempo en Asia.
23Entonces hubo un alboroto no pequeño acerca del Camino.
24Porque un platero llamado Demetrio, el cual hacía de plata templecillos de Diana, daba á los artífices no poca ganancia;
25A los cuales, reunidos con los oficiales de semejante oficio, dijo: Varones, sabéis que de este oficio tenemos ganancia;
26Y veis y oís que este Pablo, no solamente en Efeso, sino á muchas gentes de casi toda el Asia, ha apartado con persuasión, diciendo, que no son dioses los que se hacen con las manos.
27Y no solamente hay peligro de que este negocio se nos vuelva en reproche, sino también que el templo de la gran diosa Diana sea estimado en nada, y comience á ser destruída su majestad, la cual honra toda el Asia y el mundo.
28Oídas estas cosas, llenáronse de ira, y dieron alarido, diciendo: ¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!
29Y la ciudad se llenó de confusión; y unánimes se arrojaron al teatro, arrebatando á Gayo y á Aristarco, Macedonios, compañeros de Pablo.
30Y queriendo Pablo salir al pueblo, los discípulos no le dejaron.
31También algunos de los principales de Asia, que eran sus amigos, enviaron á él rogando que no se presentase en el teatro.
32Y otros gritaban otra cosa; porque la concurrencia estaba confusa, y los más no sabían por qué se habían juntado.
33Y sacaron de entre la multitud á Alejandro, empujándole los Judíos. Entonces Alejandro, pedido silencio con la mano, quería dar razón al pueblo.
34Mas como conocieron que era Judío, fué hecha un voz de todos, que gritaron casi por dos horas: ¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!
35Entonces el escribano, apaciguado que hubo la gente, dijo: Varones Efesios, ¿y quién hay de los hombres que no sepa que la ciudad de los Efesios es honradora de la gran diosa Diana, y de la imagen venida de Júpiter?
36Así que, pues esto no puede ser contradicho, conviene que os apacigüéis, y que nada hagáis temerariamente;
37Pues habéis traído á estos hombres, sin ser sacrílegos ni blasfemadores de vuestra diosa.
38Que si Demetrio y los oficiales que están con él tienen negocio con alguno, audiencias se hacen, y procónsules hay; acúsense los unos á los otros.
39Y si demandáis alguna otra cosa, en legítima asamblea se pueda decidir.
40Porque peligro hay de que seamos argüidos de sedición por hoy, no habiendo ninguna causa por la cual podamos dar razón de este concurso. Y habiendo dicho esto, despidió la concurrencia.

1And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.
4Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7And all the men were about twelve.
8And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
9But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
10And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
11And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
12So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
13Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
14And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
15And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
16And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
19Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.
21After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.
22So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
23And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
24For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
25Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
26Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
28And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
29And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
30And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
31And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.
32Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
33And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.
34But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
35And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
36Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
37For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
38Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.
39But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
40For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.
41And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus and found certain disciples.
2He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.”
5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.
7They were about twelve men in all.
8He entered into the synagogue and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning God’s Kingdom.
9But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

12so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out.
13But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
14There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.
15The evil spirit answered, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?”
16The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18Many also of those who had believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds.
19Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted their price, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.
21Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.”
22Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
23About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way.
24For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,
25whom he gathered together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, “Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.
26You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.
27Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”
28When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.
30When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.
31Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.
32Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.
33They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.
34But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?
36Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash.
37For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.
38If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.
39But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
40For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”
41When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
