Während nun Apollos sich in Korinth aufhielt, kam Paulus, nachdem er das Binnenland von Kleinasien durchwandert hatte, nach Ephesus und fand dort einige Jünger vor.

Y ACONTECIÓ que entre tanto que Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo, andadas las regiones superiores, vino á Efeso, y hallando ciertos discípulos,

Er fragte diese: »Habt ihr den heiligen Geist empfangen, nachdem ihr gläubig geworden waret?« Sie antworteten ihm: »Nein, wir haben überhaupt noch nichts davon gehört, ob der heilige Geist (schon) da ist.«

Da sagte Paulus: »Johannes hat (nur) eine Bußtaufe vollzogen und dabei dem Volke geboten, sie sollten an den glauben, der nach ihm kommen würde, nämlich an Jesus.«

Paulus ging dann in die Synagoge und trat dort ein Vierteljahr lang mit Freimut auf, indem er sich besprach und sie für das Reich Gottes zu gewinnen suchte.

Als manche jedoch verstockt und unzugänglich blieben und die (neue) Lehre vor der versammelten Menge schmähten, sagte er sich von ihnen los, sonderte auch die Jünger von ihnen ab und hielt nun täglich seine Vorträge im Hörsaal eines gewissen Tyrannus.

Das ging so zwei Jahre lang fort, so daß alle Bewohner der Provinz Asien das Wort des Herrn zu hören bekamen, Juden sowohl wie Griechen. –

Auch ungewöhnliche Wunder ließ Gott durch die Hände des Paulus geschehen,

Nun unterfingen sich aber auch einige von den umherziehenden jüdischen Beschwörern, über Personen, die von bösen Geistern besessen waren, den Namen des Herrn Jesus auszusprechen, indem sie sagten: »Ich beschwöre euch bei dem Jesus, den Paulus predigt!«

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

Es waren besonders sieben Söhne eines gewissen Skeuas, eines Juden aus hohepriesterlichem Geschlecht, die das taten.

Ebenso kamen auch viele von denen, die gläubig geworden waren, und bekannten offen und unverhohlen ihr früheres Treiben;

Als dieses glücklich ausgeführt war, entschloß sich Paulus dazu, Mazedonien und Griechenland zu durchwandern und sich dann nach Jerusalem zu begeben, wobei er erklärte: »Nachdem ich dort gewesen bin, muß ich auch Rom sehen.«

Um diese Zeit aber kam es (in Ephesus) zu großen Unruhen wegen des Weges.

Ein Silberschmied nämlich, Demetrius mit Namen, der silberne Tempel der Artemis verfertigte und den Handwerkern dadurch viel zu verdienen gab,

berief diese und die hierbei beschäftigten Arbeiter zu einer Versammlung und sprach sich so aus: »Ihr Männer, ihr wißt, daß wir unsern Wohlstand diesem unserm Gewerbe verdanken.

Nun seht und hört ihr aber, daß dieser Paulus nicht nur hier in Ephesus, sondern beinahe in der ganzen Provinz Asien viele Leute durch sein Gerede betört hat, indem er ihnen vorhält, das seien keine Götter, die von Menschenhänden angefertigt würden.

Y veis y oís que este Pablo, no solamente en Efeso, sino á muchas gentes de casi toda el Asia, ha apartado con persuasión, diciendo, que no son dioses los que se hacen con las manos.

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

Aber nicht nur dieser unser Erwerbszweig droht in Mißachtung zu kommen, sondern auch der Tempel der großen Göttin Artemis schwebt in Gefahr, in völlige Mißachtung zu geraten; ja es ist zu befürchten, daß sie sogar ihres hohen Ruhmes ganz verlustig geht, während sie jetzt doch von ganz Asien, ja von aller Welt verehrt wird.«

Y no solamente hay peligro de que este negocio se nos vuelva en reproche, sino también que el templo de la gran diosa Diana sea estimado en nada, y comience á ser destruída su majestad, la cual honra toda el Asia y el mundo.

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”

Als sie das hörten, gerieten sie in volle Wut und riefen laut: »Groß ist die Artemis von Ephesus!«

Die ganze Stadt geriet in Aufruhr, und alle stürmten einmütig ins Theater, wohin sie auch die Mazedonier Gajus und Aristarchus, die Reisegefährten des Paulus, mitschleppten.

Als Paulus nun (selbst) vor die Volksmenge treten wollte, ließen die Jünger es ihm nicht zu;

También algunos de los principales de Asia, que eran sus amigos, enviaron á él rogando que no se presentase en el teatro.

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

Da verständigte man aus der Volksmenge heraus den Alexander, den die Juden vorschoben. Dieser Alexander gab auch ein Zeichen mit der Hand und wollte eine Verteidigungsrede an das Volk richten;

als man aber merkte, daß er ein Jude sei, erscholl von allen wie aus einem Munde etwa zwei Stunden lang der Ruf: »Groß ist die Artemis von Ephesus!«

Mas como conocieron que era Judío, fué hecha un voz de todos, que gritaron casi por dos horas: ¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Endlich brachte der Stadtschreiber die Menge zur Ruhe und sagte: »Ihr Männer von Ephesus! Wo gibt es wohl in der ganzen Welt einen Menschen, der nicht wüßte, daß die Stadt Ephesus die Tempelhüterin der großen Artemis und ihres vom Himmel herabgefallenen Bildes ist?

When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

Da dies also eine unbestreitbare Tatsache ist, solltet ihr euch ja ruhig verhalten und nichts Übereiltes tun.

Así que, pues esto no puede ser contradicho, conviene que os apacigüéis, y que nada hagáis temerariamente;

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

Ihr habt ja doch diese Männer hierher gebracht, die weder Tempelräuber sind noch unsere Göttin lästern.

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

Wenn nun Demetrius und die Zunft der Kunsthandwerker mit ihm Grund zu einer Klage gegen jemand haben, nun, so werden ja Gerichtstage abgehalten, und es gibt Statthalter; dort mögen sie ihre Sache miteinander abmachen!

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

Habt ihr aber außerdem noch Wünsche, so wird das in der ordentlichen Volksversammlung erledigt werden.

But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

Droht uns doch wegen der heutigen Vorkommnisse sogar eine Anklage wegen Aufruhrs, weil kein Grund vorliegt, mit dem wir diesen Aufruhr rechtfertigen könnten.« Durch diese Worte brachte er die Versammlung zum Auseinandergehen.
