Enquanto Apolo estava em Corinto, Paulo viajava pela regiões altas da província da Ásia e chegou a Éfeso, onde encontrou diversos discípulos.

Y ACONTECIÓ que entre tanto que Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo, andadas las regiones superiores, vino á Efeso, y hallando ciertos discípulos,

And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

“Vocês receberam o Espírito Santo quando creram?”, perguntou-lhes Paulo. “Não”, responderam, “nós nem sequer sabemos que existe o Espírito Santo”.

He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They said to him, “No, we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

“Neste caso, que batismo vocês receberam?”, perguntou ele. “O batismo de João Batista”, disseram eles.

Entonces dijo: ¿En qué pues sois bautizados? Y ellos dijeron: En el bautismo de Juan.

And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

He said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”

Então Paulo mostrou-lhes que o batismo de João era um batismo de arrependimento, e também disse que eles deviam prosseguir e crer em Jesus, aquele que João disse que viria depois dele.

Y dijo Pablo: Juan bautizó con bautismo de arrepentimiento, diciendo al pueblo que creyesen en el que había de venir después de él, es á saber, en Jesús el Cristo.

Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Paul said, “John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Christ Jesus.”

Logo que eles ouviram isso, foram batizados no nome do Senhor Jesus.

E depois, quando Paulo impôs as mãos sobre a cabeça deles, o Espírito Santo veio sobre eles, e começaram a falar em outras línguas e a profetizar.

Eram ao todo uns doze homens.

Então Paulo foi à sinagoga e pregou corajosamente todas as semanas durante três meses, argumentando de forma convincente a respeito do Reino de Deus.

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Porém alguns rejeitaram a mensagem dele e falaram publicamente contra o Caminho; por causa disso ele saiu de lá, recusando-se a pregar novamente para eles. Depois tomou os discípulos e passou a falar diariamente na escola de um homem chamado Tirano.

Mas endureciéndose algunos y no creyendo, maldiciendo el Camino delante de la multitud, apartándose Pablo de ellos separó á los discípulos, disputando cada día en la escuela de un cierto Tyranno.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

Isso continuou durante os dois anos seguintes, de modo que todos na província da Ásia, tanto judeus como gregos, ouviram a palavra do Senhor.

Y esto fué por espacio de dos años; de manera que todos los que habitaban en Asia, Judíos y Griegos, oyeron la palabra del Señor Jesús.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

E Deus fazia milagres extraordinários pelas mãos de Paulo.

De modo que até quando os lenços ou peças da roupa que ele usava eram levados e colocados sobre os doentes, estes ficavam curados das suas doenças, e os espíritos malignos que estavam neles saíam.

Um grupo de judeus viajantes que ia de lugar em lugar expulsando espíritos imundos tentou usar o nome do Senhor Jesus, dizendo: “Em nome de Jesus, a quem Paulo prega, eu lhes ordeno que saiam!”

Y algunos de los Judíos, exorcistas vagabundos, tentaron á invocar el nombre del Señor Jesús sobre los que tenían espíritus malos, diciendo: Os conjuro por Jesús, el que Pablo predica.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”

Quem estava fazendo isso eram os sete filhos de Cevá, um dos sacerdotes principais dos judeus.

Y había siete hijos de un tal Sceva, Judío, príncipe de los sacerdotes, que hacían esto.

And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

Mas quando eles tentaram isso com um homem dominado com um espírito imundo, o espírito respondeu: “Eu conheço Jesus e conheço Paulo, mas quem são vocês?”

Então o homem dominado pelo espírito mau saltou em cima deles e os espancou, de modo que fugiram da casa dele, nus e feridos.

A história do que tinha acontecido espalhou-se rapidamente por toda a Éfeso, tanto entre os judeus como entre os gregos; e um grande temor desceu sobre a cidade, e o nome do Senhor Jesus era grandemente reverenciado.

Então muitos dos que creram confessavam em público as obras más que tinham feito antes.

Y muchos de los que habían creído, venían, confesando y dando cuenta de sus hechos.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

Muitos dos crentes, que tinham praticado ocultismo, confessaram as suas obras. Trouxeram seus livros de magia e bruxaria e os queimaram numa fogueira pública. Alguém calculou o valor dos livros em 50.000 denários.

Asimismo muchos de los que habían practicado vanas artes, trajeron los libros, y los quemaron delante de todos; y echada la cuenta del precio de ellos, hallaron ser cincuenta mil denarios.

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

Assim, de maneira poderosa, a região toda foi muito abalada pela palavra do Senhor.

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

Depois disso, Paulo sentiu-se impulsionado pelo Espírito a passar pela Macedônia e Acaia antes de voltar a Jerusalém. “E depois de lá”, dizia ele, “eu devo seguir para Roma!”

Y acabadas estas cosas, se propuso Pablo en espíritu partir á Jerusalem, después de andada Macedonia y Acaya, diciendo: Después que hubiere estado allá, me será menester ver también á Roma.

After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.

Assim Paulo enviou Timóteo e Erasto, seus dois ajudantes, à Macedônia, enquanto ele permanecia mais um pouco na Ásia.

So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

Mas por aquele tempo surgiu um enorme alvoroço em Éfeso por causa do Caminho.

Entonces hubo un alboroto no pequeño acerca del Camino.

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

Começou com Demétrio, um ourives que empregava muitos operários na fabricação de modelos de prata do templo da deusa grega Ártemis, que dava muito lucro aos artífices.

Porque un platero llamado Demetrio, el cual hacía de plata templecillos de Diana, daba á los artífices no poca ganancia;

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;

Ele convocou uma reunião dos seus homens, juntamente com outros empregados em ofícios parecidos, e disse: “Senhores, este negócio é a nossa fonte de renda.

A los cuales, reunidos con los oficiales de semejante oficio, dijo: Varones, sabéis que de este oficio tenemos ganancia;

Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

Como vocês sabem muito bem, por aquilo que já viram e ouviram, esse sujeito, Paulo, convenceu muita gente de que deuses feitos por mãos humanas não são deuses. Como resultado, o volume das nossas vendas está caindo! E esta tendência é evidente não apenas aqui em Éfeso, mas na província toda!

Y veis y oís que este Pablo, no solamente en Efeso, sino á muchas gentes de casi toda el Asia, ha apartado con persuasión, diciendo, que no son dioses los que se hacen con las manos.

Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:

You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.

E eu não estou falando apenas sobre os aspectos comerciais desta situação e do nosso prejuízo, mas também da possibilidade de que o templo da grande deusa Ártemis perca a sua influência, esta magnífica deusa adorada não somente em toda esta parte da Ásia mas em todo o mundo, e seja destituída de sua majestade divina!”

Y no solamente hay peligro de que este negocio se nos vuelva en reproche, sino también que el templo de la gran diosa Diana sea estimado en nada, y comience á ser destruída su majestad, la cual honra toda el Asia y el mundo.

So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.

Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”

Com isso a fúria deles aumentou e começaram a gritar: “Grande é a Ártemis dos efésios!”

Oídas estas cosas, llenáronse de ira, y dieron alarido, diciendo: ¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!

And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Começou a juntar-se uma multidão e daí a pouco a cidade toda estava em confusão. O povo correu para o anfiteatro, e arrastaram com eles os macedônios Gaio e Aristarco, companheiros de viagem de Paulo.

Y la ciudad se llenó de confusión; y unánimes se arrojaron al teatro, arrebatando á Gayo y á Aristarco, Macedonios, compañeros de Pablo.

And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

Paulo queria falar ao povo, mas os discípulos não o permitiram.

Alguns amigos de Paulo, que eram autoridades da província, mandaram também um recado a ele, suplicando-lhe que não arriscasse a vida entrando lá.

También algunos de los principales de Asia, que eran sus amigos, enviaron á él rogando que no se presentase en el teatro.

And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.

Dentro, o povo todo estava gritando, cada pessoa uma coisa diferente. Aliás, a maioria deles nem mesmo sabia por que estava ali.

Y otros gritaban otra cosa; porque la concurrencia estaba confusa, y los más no sabían por qué se habían juntado.

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

Alguns judeus descobriram Alexandre no meio da multidão, e o empurraram para a frente. Ele fez sinal pedindo silêncio, e tentou falar, com a intenção de fazer a sua defesa diante do povo.

Mas quando a multidão percebeu que ele era judeu, todos começaram a gritar novamente, por cerca de duas horas: “Grande é a Ártemis dos efésios! Grande é a Ártemis dos efésios!”

Mas como conocieron que era Judío, fué hecha un voz de todos, que gritaron casi por dos horas: ¡Grande es Diana de los Efesios!

But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

Por fim o escrivão da cidade conseguiu silêncio e falou: “Homens de Éfeso”, disse ele, “todo mundo sabe que Éfeso é o centro da religião da grande Ártemis, cuja imagem caiu do céu para nós.

And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, “You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

E já que isto é um fato sem discussão, vocês não devem ficar perturbados, digam o que disserem, e não façam nada sem pensar primeiro.

Así que, pues esto no puede ser contradicho, conviene que os apacigüéis, y que nada hagáis temerariamente;

Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.

Seeing then that these things can’t be denied, you ought to be quiet and to do nothing rash.

Todavia, vocês trouxeram aqui estes homens que não roubaram nada do templo dela, nem difamaram a deusa.

Pues habéis traído á estos hombres, sin ser sacrílegos ni blasfemadores de vuestra diosa.

For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.

For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.

Se Demétrio e seus companheiros de profissão têm alguma queixa contra eles, os tribunais estão abertos normalmente e os juízes podem cuidar do caso bem depressa. Deixem que eles tratem do assunto pelos meios legais.

Que si Demetrio y los oficiales que están con él tienen negocio con alguno, audiencias se hacen, y procónsules hay; acúsense los unos á los otros.

Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.

If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.

E se há queixas a respeito de outros assuntos, elas podem ser apresentadas nas reuniões regulares da assembleia da cidade, conforme a lei.

Y si demandáis alguna otra cosa, en legítima asamblea se pueda decidir.

But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.

Pois corremos o perigo de ser acusados pelo governo romano por causa deste tumulto de hoje, visto que não existe motivo para ele. E se Roma exigir uma explicação, eu nem sei o que dizer”.

Porque peligro hay de que seamos argüidos de sedición por hoy, no habiendo ninguna causa por la cual podamos dar razón de este concurso. Y habiendo dicho esto, despidió la concurrencia.

For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.

For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning today’s riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn’t be able to give an account of this commotion.”

Com isto ele mandou todos embora e encerrou a assembleia.
