Als man ihn nun schon für die (Geißelung mit) Riemen ausgestreckt hatte, sagte Paulus zu dem Hauptmann, der dabeistand: »Dürft ihr einen römischen Bürger geißeln, und noch dazu, ehe ein richterliches Urteil vorliegt?«

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

When they had tied him up with straps, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”
