VARONES hermanos y padres, oid la razón que ahora os doy.
Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.
“Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you.”
Ora, quando ebbero udito ch'egli parlava loro in lingua ebrea, tanto più fecero silenzio. Poi disse:
(Y como oyeron que les hablaba en lengua hebrea, guardaron más silencio.) Y dijo:
(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,
Io certo son uomo Giudeo, nato in Tarso di Cilicia, ed allevato in questa città a' piedi di Gamaliele, ammaestrato secondo l'isquisita maniera della legge de' padri, zelatore di Dio, come voi tutti siete oggi.
Yo de cierto soy Judío, nacido en Tarso de Cilicia, mas criado en esta ciudad á los pies de Gamaliel, enseñado conforme á la verdad de la ley de la patria, celoso de Dios, como todos vosotros sois hoy.
I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.
Ed ho perseguitata questa professione sino alla morte, mettendo ne' legami, ed in prigione uomini e donne.
Que he perseguido este camino hasta la muerte, prendiendo y entregando en cárceles hombres y mujeres:
And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

Come mi son testimoni il sommo sacerdote, e tutto il concistoro degli anziani; da cui eziandio avendo ricevute lettere a' fratelli, io andava in Damasco, per menar prigioni in Gerusalemme quegli ancora ch'erano quivi, acciocchè fosser puniti.
Como también el príncipe de los sacerdotes me es testigo, y todos los ancianos; de los cuales también tomando letras á los hermanos, iba á Damasco para traer presos á Jerusalem aun á los que estuviesen allí, para que fuesen castigados.
As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.
Or avvenne che, mentre io era in cammino, e mi avvicinava a Damasco, in sul mezzodì, di subito una gran luce mi folgorò d'intorno dal cielo.
Mas aconteció que yendo yo, y llegando cerca de Damasco, como á medio día, de repente me rodeó mucha luz del cielo:
And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
“As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.
Ed io caddi in terra, ed udii una voce che mi disse: Saulo, Saulo, perchè mi perseguiti?
Y caí en el suelo, y oí una voz que me decía: Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues?
And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’
Ed io risposi: Chi sei, Signore? Ed egli mi disse: Io son Gesù il Nazareo, il qual tu perseguiti.
Yo entonces respondí: ¿Quién eres, Señor? Y me dijo: Yo soy Jesús de Nazaret, á quien tú persigues.
And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’
Or coloro che eran meco videro ben la luce, e furono spaventati; ma non udiron la voce di colui che parlava meco.
Y los que estaban conmigo vieron á la verdad la luz, y se espantaron; mas no oyeron la voz del que hablaba conmigo.
And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
“Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.
Ed io dissi: Signore, che debbo io fare? E il Signor mi disse: Levati, e va' in Damasco; e quivi ti sarà parlato di tutte le cose che ti sono ordinate di fare.
Y dije: ¿Qué haré, Señor? Y el Señor me dijo: Levántate, y ve á Damasco, y allí te será dicho todo lo que te está señalado hacer.
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’
Ora, perciocchè io non vedeva nulla, per la gloria di quella luce, fui menato per la mano da coloro ch'erano meco; e così entrai in Damasco.
Y como yo no viese por causa de la claridad de la luz, llevado de la mano por los que estaban conmigo, vine á Damasco.
And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
Or un certo Anania, uomo pio secondo la legge, al quale tutti i Giudei che abitavano in Damasco rendevano buona testimonianza, venne a me,
Entonces un Ananías, varón pío conforme á la ley, que tenía buen testimonio de todos los Judíos que allí moraban,
And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,
“One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,
ed essendo appresso a me, disse: Fratello Saulo, ricovera la vista. E in quello stante io ricoverai la vista, e lo riguardai.
Viniendo á mí, y acercándose, me dijo: Hermano Saulo, recibe la vista. Y yo en aquella hora le miré.
Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.
Ed egli mi disse: L'Iddio de' nostri padri ti ha preordinato a conoscer la sua volontà, ed a vedere il Giusto, e ad udire una voce dalla sua bocca.
Y él dijo: El Dios de nuestros padres te ha predestinado para que conocieses su voluntad, y vieses á aquel Justo, y oyeses la voz de su boca.
And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.
Perciocchè tu gli devi essere presso tutti gli uomini testimonio delle cose che tu hai vedute, ed udite.
Porque has de ser testigo suyo á todos los hombres, de lo que has visto y oído.
For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.
Ed ora, che indugi? levati, e sii battezzato, e lavato de' tuoi peccati, invocando il nome del Signore.
Ahora pues, ¿por qué te detienes? Levántate, y bautízate, y lava tus pecados, invocando su nombre.
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
Or avvenne che, dopo che io fui ritornato in Gerusalemme, orando nel tempio, mi venne un ratto di mente.
Y me aconteció, vuelto á Jerusalem, que orando en el templo, fuí arrebatado fuera de mí.
And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
“When I had returned to Jerusalem and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance
E vidi esso Signore che mi diceva: Affrettati, ed esci prestamente di Gerusalemme; perciocchè essi non riceveranno la tua testimonianza intorno a me.
Y le vi que me decía: Date prisa, y sal prestamente fuera de Jerusalem; porque no recibirán tu testimonio de mí.
And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’
Ed io dissi: Signore, eglino stessi sanno che io incarcerava, e batteva per le raunanze coloro che credono in te.
Y yo dije: Señor, ellos saben que yo encerraba en cárcel, y hería por las sinagogas á los que creían en ti;
And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.
E quando si spandeva il sangue di Stefano, tuo martire, io ancora era presente, e acconsentiva alla sua morte, e guardava i vestimenti di coloro che l'uccidevano.
Y cuando se derramaba la sangre de Esteban tu testigo, yo también estaba presente, y consentía á su muerte, y guardaba las ropas de los que le mataban.
And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’
Ed egli mi disse: Vattene, perciocchè io ti manderò lungi a' Gentili.
Y me dijo: Ve, porque yo te tengo que enviar lejos á los Gentiles.
And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
“He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’ ”
Or essi l'ascoltarono fino a questa parola; ma poi alzarono la lor voce, dicendo: Togli via di terra un tal uomo; perciocchè ei non conviene ch'egli viva.
Y le oyeron hasta esta palabra: entonces alzaron la voz, diciendo: Quita de la tierra á un tal hombre, porque no conviene que viva.
And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said, “Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!”
E, come essi gridavano, e gettavano i lor vestimenti, e mandavano la polvere in aria,
Y dando ellos voces, y arrojando sus ropas y echando polvo al aire,
And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
As they cried out, threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,
il capitano comandò che Paolo fosse menato dentro alla rocca, ordinando che si facesse inquisizion di lui per flagelli, per sapere per qual cagione gridavano così contro a lui.
Mandó el tribuno que le llevasen á la fortaleza, y ordenó que fuese examinado con azotes, para saber por qué causa clamaban así contra él.
The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.
Ma, come l'ebbero disteso con le coregge, Paolo disse al centurione ch'era quivi presente: Evvi egli lecito di flagellare un uomo Romano, e non condannato?
Y como le ataron con correas, Pablo dijo al centurión que estaba presente: ¿Os es lícito azotar á un hombre Romano sin ser condenado?
And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
When they had tied him up with straps, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”
E il centurione, udito ciò, venne, e lo rapportò al capitano, dicendo: Guarda ciò che tu farai, perciocchè quest'uomo è Romano.
Y como el centurión oyó esto, fué y dió aviso al tribuno, diciendo: ¿Qué vas á hacer? porque este hombre es Romano.
When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, “Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!”
E il capitano venne a Paolo, e gli disse: Dimmi, sei tu Romano?
Y viniendo el tribuno, le dijo: Dime, ¿eres tú Romano? Y él dijo: Sí.
Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
The commanding officer came and asked him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” He said, “Yes.”
Ed egli disse: Sì, certo. E il capitano rispose: Io ho acquistata questa cittadinanza per gran somma di danari. E Paolo disse: Ma io l'ho anche di nascita.
Y respondió el tribuno: Yo con grande suma alcancé esta ciudadanía. Entonces Pablo dijo: Pero yo lo soy de nacimiento.
And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”
Laonde coloro che doveano far l'inquisizion di lui si ritrassero subito da lui; e il capitano stesso ebbe paura, avendo saputo ch'egli era Romano; perciocchè egli l'avea legato.
Así que, luego se apartaron de él los que le habían de atormentar: y aun el tribuno también tuvo temor, entendido que era Romano, por haberle atado.
Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.
E IL giorno seguente, volendo saper la certezza di ciò onde egli era accusato da' Giudei, lo sciolse da' legami, e comandò a' principali sacerdoti, ed a tutto il lor concistoro, di venire. E, menato Paolo a basso, lo presentò davanti a loro.
Y al día siguiente, queriendo saber de cierto la causa por qué era acusado de los Judíos, le soltó de las prisiones, y mandó venir á los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y á todo su concilio: y sacando á Pablo, le presentó delante de ellos.
On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
