1Fratelli e padri, ascoltate ciò che ora vi dico a mia difesa.
2E quand’ebbero udito ch’egli parlava loro in lingua ebraica, tanto più fecero silenzio. Poi disse:
3Io sono un Giudeo, nato a Tarso di Cilicia, ma allevato in questa città, ai piedi di Gamaliele, educato nella rigida osservanza della legge dei padri, e fui zelante per la causa di Dio, come voi tutti siete oggi;
4e perseguitai a morte questa Via, legando e mettendo in prigione uomini e donne,
5come me ne son testimoni il sommo sacerdote e tutto il concistoro degli anziani, dai quali avendo pure ricevuto lettere per i fratelli, mi recavo a Damasco per menare legati a Gerusalemme anche quelli ch’eran quivi, perché fossero puniti.
6Or avvenne che mentre ero in cammino e mi avvicinavo a Damasco, sul mezzogiorno, di subito dal cielo mi folgoreggiò d’intorno una gran luce.
7Caddi in terra, e udii una voce che mi disse: Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti?
8E io risposi: Chi sei, Signore? Ed egli mi disse: Io son Gesù il Nazareno, che tu perseguiti.
9Or coloro ch’eran meco, videro ben la luce ma non udirono la voce di colui che mi parlava.
10E io dissi: Signore, che debbo fare? E il Signore mi disse: Lèvati, va’ a Damasco, e quivi ti saranno dette tutte le cose che t’è ordinato di fare.
11E siccome io non ci vedevo più per il fulgore di quella luce, fui menato per mano da coloro che eran meco, e così venni a Damasco.
12Or un certo Anania, uomo pio secondo la legge, al quale tutti i Giudei che abitavan quivi rendevan buona testimonianza,
13venne a me; e standomi vicino, mi disse: Fratello Saulo, ricupera la vista. Ed io in quell’istante ricuperai la vista, e lo guardai.
14Ed egli disse: L’Iddio de’ nostri padri ti ha destinato a conoscer la sua volontà, e a vedere il Giusto, e a udire una voce dalla sua bocca.
15Poiché tu gli sarai presso tutti gli uomini un testimone delle cose che hai vedute e udite.
16Ed ora, che indugi? Lèvati, e sii battezzato, e lavato dei tuoi peccati, invocando il suo nome.
17Or avvenne, dopo ch’io fui tornato a Gerusalemme, che mentre pregavo nel tempio fui rapito in estasi,
18e vidi Gesù che mi diceva: Affrettati, ed esci prestamente da Gerusalemme, perché essi non riceveranno la tua testimonianza intorno a me.
19E io dissi: Signore, eglino stessi sanno che io incarceravo e battevo nelle sinagoghe quelli che credevano in te;
20e quando si spandeva il sangue di Stefano tuo testimone, anch’io ero presente e approvavo, e custodivo le vesti di coloro che l’uccidevano.
21Ed egli mi disse: Va’, perché io ti manderò lontano, ai Gentili.
22L’ascoltarono fino a questa parola; e poi alzarono la voce, dicendo: Togli via un tal uomo dal mondo; perché non è degno di vivere.
23Com’essi gridavano e gettavan via le loro vesti e lanciavano la polvere in aria,
24il tribuno comandò ch’egli fosse menato dentro la fortezza e inquisito mediante i flagelli, affin di sapere per qual cagione gridassero così contro a lui.
25E come l’ebbero disteso e legato con le cinghie, Paolo disse al centurione ch’era presente: V’è egli lecito flagellare un uomo che è cittadino romano, e non è stato condannato?
26E il centurione, udito questo, venne a riferirlo al tribuno, dicendo: Che stai per fare? perché quest’uomo è Romano.
27Il tribuno venne a Paolo, e gli chiese: Dimmi, sei tu Romano? Ed egli rispose: Sì.
28E il tribuno replicò: Io ho acquistato questa cittadinanza per gran somma di denaro. E Paolo disse: Io, invece, l’ho di nascita.
29Allora quelli che stavan per inquisirlo, si ritrassero subito da lui; e anche il tribuno ebbe paura, quand’ebbe saputo che egli era Romano; perché l’avea fatto legare.
30E il giorno seguente, volendo saper con certezza di che cosa egli fosse accusato dai Giudei, lo sciolse, e comandò ai capi sacerdoti e a tutto il Sinedrio di radunarsi; e menato giù Paolo, lo fe’ comparire dinanzi a loro.

1VARONES hermanos y padres, oid la razón que ahora os doy.
2(Y como oyeron que les hablaba en lengua hebrea, guardaron más silencio.) Y dijo:
3Yo de cierto soy Judío, nacido en Tarso de Cilicia, mas criado en esta ciudad á los pies de Gamaliel, enseñado conforme á la verdad de la ley de la patria, celoso de Dios, como todos vosotros sois hoy.
4Que he perseguido este camino hasta la muerte, prendiendo y entregando en cárceles hombres y mujeres:
5Como también el príncipe de los sacerdotes me es testigo, y todos los ancianos; de los cuales también tomando letras á los hermanos, iba á Damasco para traer presos á Jerusalem aun á los que estuviesen allí, para que fuesen castigados.
6Mas aconteció que yendo yo, y llegando cerca de Damasco, como á medio día, de repente me rodeó mucha luz del cielo:
7Y caí en el suelo, y oí una voz que me decía: Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues?
8Yo entonces respondí: ¿Quién eres, Señor? Y me dijo: Yo soy Jesús de Nazaret, á quien tú persigues.
9Y los que estaban conmigo vieron á la verdad la luz, y se espantaron; mas no oyeron la voz del que hablaba conmigo.
10Y dije: ¿Qué haré, Señor? Y el Señor me dijo: Levántate, y ve á Damasco, y allí te será dicho todo lo que te está señalado hacer.
11Y como yo no viese por causa de la claridad de la luz, llevado de la mano por los que estaban conmigo, vine á Damasco.
12Entonces un Ananías, varón pío conforme á la ley, que tenía buen testimonio de todos los Judíos que allí moraban,
13Viniendo á mí, y acercándose, me dijo: Hermano Saulo, recibe la vista. Y yo en aquella hora le miré.
14Y él dijo: El Dios de nuestros padres te ha predestinado para que conocieses su voluntad, y vieses á aquel Justo, y oyeses la voz de su boca.
15Porque has de ser testigo suyo á todos los hombres, de lo que has visto y oído.
16Ahora pues, ¿por qué te detienes? Levántate, y bautízate, y lava tus pecados, invocando su nombre.
17Y me aconteció, vuelto á Jerusalem, que orando en el templo, fuí arrebatado fuera de mí.
18Y le vi que me decía: Date prisa, y sal prestamente fuera de Jerusalem; porque no recibirán tu testimonio de mí.
19Y yo dije: Señor, ellos saben que yo encerraba en cárcel, y hería por las sinagogas á los que creían en ti;
20Y cuando se derramaba la sangre de Esteban tu testigo, yo también estaba presente, y consentía á su muerte, y guardaba las ropas de los que le mataban.
21Y me dijo: Ve, porque yo te tengo que enviar lejos á los Gentiles.
22Y le oyeron hasta esta palabra: entonces alzaron la voz, diciendo: Quita de la tierra á un tal hombre, porque no conviene que viva.
23Y dando ellos voces, y arrojando sus ropas y echando polvo al aire,
24Mandó el tribuno que le llevasen á la fortaleza, y ordenó que fuese examinado con azotes, para saber por qué causa clamaban así contra él.
25Y como le ataron con correas, Pablo dijo al centurión que estaba presente: ¿Os es lícito azotar á un hombre Romano sin ser condenado?
26Y como el centurión oyó esto, fué y dió aviso al tribuno, diciendo: ¿Qué vas á hacer? porque este hombre es Romano.
27Y viniendo el tribuno, le dijo: Dime, ¿eres tú Romano? Y él dijo: Sí.
28Y respondió el tribuno: Yo con grande suma alcancé esta ciudadanía. Entonces Pablo dijo: Pero yo lo soy de nacimiento.
29Así que, luego se apartaron de él los que le habían de atormentar: y aun el tribuno también tuvo temor, entendido que era Romano, por haberle atado.
30Y al día siguiente, queriendo saber de cierto la causa por qué era acusado de los Judíos, le soltó de las prisiones, y mandó venir á los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y á todo su concilio: y sacando á Pablo, le presentó delante de ellos.

1Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.
2(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
3I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
4And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
5As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
6And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
7And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
9And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
10And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
11And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
12And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,
13Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
14And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
15For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
16And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
17And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
18And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
20And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
21And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
22And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
23And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
24The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
25And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
27Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
28And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
29Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
30On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

1“Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you.”
2When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet. He said,
3“I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today.
4I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,
5as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.
6“As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky.
7I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’
8I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’
9“Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me.
10I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’
11When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
12“One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus,
13came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him.
14He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth.
15For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard.
16Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
17“When I had returned to Jerusalem and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance
18and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’
19I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you.
20When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’
21“He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’ ”
22They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said, “Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!”
23As they cried out, threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air,
24the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that.
25When they had tied him up with straps, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?”
26When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, “Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!”
27The commanding officer came and asked him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?” He said, “Yes.”
28The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”
29Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him.
30But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
