1Cinque giorni dopo, il sommo sacerdote Anania discese con alcuni anziani e con un certo Tertullo, oratore; e si presentarono al governatore per accusar Paolo.
2Questi essendo stato chiamato, Tertullo comincio ad accusarlo, dicendo:
3Siccome in grazia tua godiamo molta pace, e per la tua previdenza sono state fatte delle riforme a pro di questa nazione, noi in tutto e per tutto lo riconosciamo, o eccellentissimo Felice, con ogni gratitudine.
4Ora, per non trattenerti troppo a lungo, ti prego che, secondo la tua condiscendenza, tu ascolti quel che abbiamo a dirti in breve.
5Abbiam dunque trovato che quest’uomo è una peste, che eccita sedizioni fra tutti i Giudei del mondo, ed è capo della setta de’ Nazarei.
6Egli ha perfino tentato di profanare il tempio; onde noi l’abbiamo preso; e noi lo volevamo giudicare secondo la nostra legge:
7ma il tribuno Lisia, sopraggiunto, ce l’ha strappato con violenza dalle mani,
8ordinando che i suoi accusatori si presentassero dinanzi a te; e da lui, esaminandolo, potrai tu stesso aver piena conoscenza di tutte le cose, delle quali noi l’accusiamo.
9I Giudei si unirono anch’essi nelle accuse, affermando che le cose stavan così.
10E Paolo, dopo che il governatore gli ebbe fatto cenno che parlasse, rispose: Sapendo che già da molti anni tu sei giudice di questa nazione, parlo con più coraggio a mia difesa.
11Poiché tu puoi accertarti che non son più di dodici giorni ch’io salii a Gerusalemme per adorare;
12ed essi non mi hanno trovato nel tempio, né nelle sinagoghe, né in città a discutere con alcuno, né a far adunata di popolo;
13e non posson provarti le cose delle quali ora m’accusano.
14Ma questo ti confesso, che secondo la Via ch’essi chiamano setta, io adoro l’Iddio de’ padri, credendo tutte le cose che sono scritte nella legge e nei profeti;
15avendo in Dio la speranza che nutrono anche costoro che ci sarà una risurrezione de’ giusti e degli ingiusti.
16Per questo anch’io m’esercito ad aver del continuo una coscienza pura dinanzi a Dio e dinanzi agli uomini.
17Or dopo molti anni, io son venuto a portar elemosine alla mia nazione e a presentar offerte.
18Mentre io stavo facendo questo, mi hanno trovato purificato nel tempio, senza assembramento e senza tumulto;
19ed erano alcuni Giudei dell’Asia; questi avrebbero dovuto comparire dinanzi a te ed accusarmi, se avevano cosa alcuna contro a me.
20D’altronde dicano costoro qual misfatto hanno trovato in me, quando mi presentai dinanzi al Sinedrio;
21se pur non si tratti di quest’unica parola che gridai, quando comparvi dinanzi a loro: E’ a motivo della risurrezione de’ morti, che io son oggi giudicato da voi.
22Or Felice, che ben conosceva quel che concerneva questa Via, li rimandò a un’altra volta, dicendo: Quando sarà sceso il tribuno Lisia, esaminerò il fatto vostro.
23E ordinò al centurione che Paolo fosse custodito, ma lasciandogli una qualche libertà, e non vietando ad alcuno de’ suoi di rendergli de’ servigi.
24Or alcuni giorni dopo, Felice, venuto con Drusilla sua moglie, che era giudea, mandò a chiamar Paolo, e l’ascoltò circa la fede in Cristo Gesù.
25Ma ragionando Paolo di giustizia, di temperanza e del giudizio a venire, Felice, tutto spaventato, replicò: Per ora, vattene; e quando ne troverò l’opportunità, ti manderò a chiamare.
26Egli sperava, in pari tempo, che da Paolo gli sarebbe dato del denaro; per questo lo mandava spesso a chiamare e discorreva con lui.
27Or in capo a due anni, Felice ebbe per successore Porcio Festo; e Felice, volendo far cosa grata ai Giudei, lasciò Paolo in prigione.

1Y CINCO días después descendió el sumo sacerdote Ananías, con algunos de los ancianos, y un cierto Tértulo, orador; y parecieron delante del gobernador contra Pablo.
2Y citado que fué, Tértulo comenzó á acusar, diciendo: Como por causa tuya vivamos en grande paz, y muchas cosas sean bien gobernadas en el pueblo por tu prudencia,
3Siempre y en todo lugar lo recibimos con todo hacimiento de gracias, oh excelentísimo Félix.
4Empero por no molestarte más largamente, ruégote que nos oigas brevemente conforme á tu equidad.
5Porque hemos hallado que este hombre es pestilencial, y levantador de sediciones entre todos los Judíos por todo el mundo, y príncipe de la secta de los Nazarenos:
6El cual también tentó á violar el templo; y prendiéndole, le quisimos juzgar conforme á nuestra ley:
7Mas interviniendo el tribuno Lisias, con grande violencia le quitó de nuestras manos,
8Mandando á sus acusadores que viniesen á ti; del cual tú mismo juzgando, podrás entender todas estas cosas de que le acusamos.
9Y contendían también los Judíos, diciendo ser así estas cosas.
10Entonces Pablo, haciéndole el gobernador señal que hablase, respondió: Porque sé que muchos años ha eres gobernador de esta nación, con buen ánimo satisfaré por mí.
11Porque tú puedes entender que no hace más de doce días que subí á adorar á Jerusalem;
12Y ni me hallaron en el templo disputando con ninguno, ni haciendo concurso de multitud, ni en sinagogas, ni en la ciudad;
13Ni te pueden probar las cosas de que ahora me acusan.
14Esto empero te confieso, que conforme á aquel Camino que llaman herejía, así sirvo al Dios de mis padres, creyendo todas las cosas que en la ley y en los profetas están escritas;
15Teniendo esperanza en Dios que ha de haber resurrección de los muertos, así de justos como de injustos, la cual también ellos esperan.
16Y por esto, procuro yo tener siempre conciencia sin remordimiento acerca de Dios y acerca de los hombres.
17Mas pasados muchos años, vine á hacer limosnas á mi nación, y ofrendas,
18Cuando me hallaron purificado en el templo (no con multitud ni con alboroto) unos Judíos de Asia;
19Los cuales debieron comparecer delante de ti, y acusarme, si contra mí tenían algo.
20O digan estos mismos si hallaron en mí alguna cosa mal hecha, cuando yo estuve en el concilio,
21Si no sea que, estando entre ellos prorrumpí en alta voz: Acerca de la resurrección de los muertos soy hoy juzgado de vosotros.
22Entonces Félix, oídas estas cosas, estando bien informado de esta secta, les puso dilación, diciendo: Cuando descendiere el tribuno Lisias acabaré de conocer de vuestro negocio.
23Y mandó al centurión que Pablo fuese guardado, y aliviado de las prisiones; y que no vedase á ninguno de sus familiares servirle, ó venir á él.
24Y algunos días después, viniendo Félix con Drusila, su mujer, la cual era Judía, llamó á Pablo, y oyó de él la fe que es en Jesucristo.
25Y disertando él de la justicia, y de la continencia, y del juicio venidero, espantado Félix, respondió: Ahora vete; mas en teniendo oportunidad te llamaré:
26Esperando también con esto, que de parte de Pablo le serían dados dineros, porque le soltase; por lo cual, haciéndole venir muchas veces, hablaba con él.
27Mas al cabo de dos años recibió Félix por sucesor á Porcio Festo: y queriendo Félix ganar la gracia de los Judíos, dejó preso á Pablo.

1And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.
2And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,
3We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.
4Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.
5For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
6Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.
7But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,
8Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.
9And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.
10Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:
11Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.
12And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:
13Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.
14But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
15And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
16And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
17Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.
18Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.
19Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.
20Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
21Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.
22And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.
23And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.
24And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
25And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.
26He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.
27But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix’ room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.

1After five days, the high priest, Ananias, came down with certain elders and an orator, one Tertullus. They informed the governor against Paul.
2When he was called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, “Seeing that by you we enjoy much peace, and that prosperity is coming to this nation by your foresight,
3we accept it in all ways and in all places, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.
4But that I don’t delay you, I entreat you to bear with us and hear a few words.
5For we have found this man to be a plague, an instigator of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.
6He even tried to profane the temple, and we arrested him.

8By examining him yourself you may ascertain all these things of which we accuse him.”
9The Jews also joined in the attack, affirming that these things were so.
10When the governor had beckoned to him to speak, Paul answered, “Because I know that you have been a judge of this nation for many years, I cheerfully make my defense,
11seeing that you can verify that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem.
12In the temple they didn’t find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, either in the synagogues or in the city.
13Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me.
14But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, so I serve the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets;
15having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
16In this I also practice always having a conscience void of offense toward God and men.
17Now after some years, I came to bring gifts for the needy to my nation, and offerings;
18amid which certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, not with a mob, nor with turmoil.
19They ought to have been here before you and to make accusation if they had anything against me.
20Or else let these men themselves say what injustice they found in me when I stood before the council,
21unless it is for this one thing that I cried standing among them, ‘Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged before you today!’”
22But Felix, having more exact knowledge concerning the Way, deferred them, saying, “When Lysias, the commanding officer, comes down, I will decide your case.”
23He ordered the centurion that Paul should be kept in custody and should have some privileges, and not to forbid any of his friends to serve him or to visit him.
24After some days, Felix came with Drusilla his wife, who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ Jesus.
25As he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was terrified, and answered, “Go your way for this time, and when it is convenient for me, I will summon you.”
26Meanwhile, he also hoped that money would be given to him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore also he sent for him more often and talked with him.
27But when two years were fulfilled, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus, and desiring to gain favor with the Jews, Felix left Paul in bonds.
