1Après nous être sauvés, nous reconnûmes que l’île s’appelait Malte.
2Les barbares nous témoignèrent une bienveillance peu commune; ils nous recueillirent tous auprès d’un grand feu, qu’ils avaient allumé parce que la pluie tombait et qu’il faisait grand froid.
3Paul ayant ramassé un tas de broussailles et l’ayant mis au feu, une vipère en sortit par l’effet de la chaleur et s’attacha à sa main.
4Quand les barbares virent l’animal suspendu à sa main, ils se dirent les uns aux autres: Assurément cet homme est un meurtrier, puisque la Justice n’a pas voulu le laisser vivre, après qu’il a été sauvé de la mer.
5Paul secoua l’animal dans le feu, et ne ressentit aucun mal.
6Ces gens s’attendaient à le voir enfler ou tomber mort subitement; mais, après avoir longtemps attendu, voyant qu’il ne lui arrivait aucun mal, ils changèrent d’avis et dirent que c’était un dieu.
7Il y avait, dans les environs, des terres appartenant au principal personnage de l’île, nommé Publius, qui nous reçut et nous logea pendant trois jours de la manière la plus amicale.
8Le père de Publius était alors au lit, malade de la fièvre et de la dysenterie; Paul, s’étant rendu vers lui, pria, lui imposa les mains, et le guérit.
9Là-dessus, vinrent les autres malades de l’île, et ils furent guéris.
10On nous rendit de grands honneurs, et, à notre départ, on nous fournit les choses dont nous avions besoin.
11Après un séjour de trois mois, nous nous embarquâmes sur un navire d’Alexandrie, qui avait passé l’hiver dans l’île, et qui portait pour enseigne les Dioscures.
12Ayant abordé à Syracuse, nous y restâmes trois jours.
13De là, en suivant la côte, nous atteignîmes Reggio; et, le vent du midi s’étant levé le lendemain, nous fîmes en deux jours le trajet jusqu’à Pouzzoles,
14où nous trouvâmes des frères qui nous prièrent de passer sept jours avec eux. Et c’est ainsi que nous allâmes à Rome.
15De Rome vinrent à notre rencontre, jusqu’au Forum d’Appius et aux Trois Tavernes, les frères qui avaient entendu parler de nous. Paul, en les voyant, rendit grâces à Dieu, et prit courage.
16Lorsque nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, on permit à Paul de demeurer en son particulier, avec un soldat qui le gardait.
17Au bout de trois jours, Paul convoqua les principaux des Juifs; et, quand ils furent réunis, il leur adressa ces paroles: Hommes frères, sans avoir rien fait contre le peuple ni contre les coutumes de nos pères, j’ai été mis en prison à Jérusalem et livré de là entre les mains des Romains.
18Après m’avoir interrogé, ils voulaient me relâcher, parce qu’il n’y avait en moi rien qui méritât la mort.
19Mais les Juifs s’y opposèrent, et j’ai été forcé d’en appeler à César, n’ayant du reste aucun dessein d’accuser ma nation.
20Voilà pourquoi j’ai demandé à vous voir et à vous parler; car c’est à cause de l’espérance d’Israël que je porte cette chaîne.
21Ils lui répondirent: Nous n’avons reçu de Judée aucune lettre à ton sujet, et il n’est venu aucun frère qui ait rapporté ou dit du mal de toi.
22Mais nous voudrions apprendre de toi ce que tu penses, car nous savons que cette secte rencontre partout de l’opposition.
23Ils lui fixèrent un jour, et plusieurs vinrent le trouver dans son logis. Paul leur annonça le royaume de Dieu, en rendant témoignage, et en cherchant, par la loi de Moïse et par les prophètes, à les persuader de ce qui concerne Jésus. L’entretien dura depuis le matin jusqu’au soir.
24Les uns furent persuadés par ce qu’il disait, et les autres ne crurent point.
25Comme ils se retiraient en désaccord, Paul n’ajouta que ces mots: C’est avec raison que le Saint-Esprit, parlant à vos pères par le prophète Ésaïe, a dit:
26Va vers ce peuple, et dis: Vous entendrez de vos oreilles, et vous ne comprendrez point; Vous regarderez de vos yeux, et vous ne verrez point.
27Car le cœur de ce peuple est devenu insensible; Ils ont endurci leurs oreilles, et ils ont fermé leurs yeux, De peur qu’ils ne voient de leurs yeux, qu’ils n’entendent de leurs oreilles, Qu’ils ne comprennent de leur cœur, Qu’ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse.
28Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu a été envoyé aux païens, et qu’ils l’écouteront.
29[Lorsqu’il eut dit cela, les Juifs s’en allèrent, discutant vivement entre eux.]
30Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans une maison qu’il avait louée. Il recevait tous ceux qui venaient le voir,
31prêchant le royaume de Dieu et enseignant ce qui concerne le Seigneur Jésus-Christ, en toute liberté et sans obstacle.

2Y los bárbaros nos mostraron no poca humanidad; porque, encendido un fuego, nos recibieron á todos, á causa de la lluvia que venía, y del frío.
3Entonces habiendo Pablo recogido algunos sarmientos, y puéstolos en el fuego, una víbora, huyendo del calor, le acometió á la mano.
4Y como los bárbaros vieron la víbora colgando de su mano, decían los unos á los otros: Ciertamente este hombre es homicida, á quien, escapado de la mar, la justicia no deja vivir.
5Mas él, sacudiendo la víbora en el fuego, ningún mal padeció.
6Empero ellos estaban esperando cuándo se había de hinchar, ó caer muerto de repente; mas habiendo esperado mucho, y viendo que ningún mal le venía, mudados, decían que era un dios.
7En aquellos lugares había heredades del principal de la isla, llamado Publio, el cual nos recibió y hospedó tres días humanamente.
8Y aconteció que el padre de Publio estaba en cama, enfermo de fiebres y de disentería: al cual Pablo entró, y después de haber orado, le puso las manos encima, y le sanó:
9Y esto hecho, también los otros que en la isla tenían enfermedades, llegaban, y eran sanados:
10Los cuales también nos honraron con muchos obsequios; y cuando partimos, nos cargaron de las cosas necesarias.
11Así que, pasados tres meses, navegamos en una nave Alejandrina que había invernado en la isla, la cual tenía por enseña á Cástor y Pólux.
12Y llegados á Siracusa, estuvimos allí tres días.
13De allí, costeando alrededor, vinimos á Regio; y otro día después, soplando el austro, vinimos al segundo día á Puteolos:
14Donde habiendo hallado hermanos, nos rogaron que quedásemos con ellos siete días; y luego vinimos á Roma;
15De donde, oyendo de nosotros los hermanos, nos salieron á recibir hasta la plaza de Appio, y Las Tres Tabernas: á los cuales como Pablo vió, dió gracias á Dios, y tomó aliento.
16Y como llegamos á Roma, el centurión entregó los presos al prefecto de los ejércitos, mas á Pablo fué permitido estar por sí, con un soldado que le guardase.
17Y aconteció que tres días después, Pablo convocó á los principales de los Judíos; á los cuales, luego que estuvieron juntos, les dijo: Yo, varones hermanos, no habiendo hecho nada contra el pueblo, ni contra los ritos de la patria, he sido entregado preso desde Jerusalem en manos de los Romanos;
18Los cuales, habiéndome examinado, me querían soltar, por no haber en mí ninguna causa de muerte.
19Mas contradiciendo los Judíos, fuí forzado á apelar á César; no que tenga de qué acusar á mi nación.
20Así que, por esta causa, os he llamado para veros y hablaros; porque por la esperanza de Israel estoy rodeado de esta cadena.
21Entonces ellos le dijeron: Nosotros ni hemos recibido cartas tocante á ti de Judea, ni ha venido alguno de los hermanos que haya denunciado ó hablado algún mal de ti.
22Mas querríamos oir de ti lo que sientes; porque de esta secta notorio nos es que en todos lugares es contradicha.
23Y habiéndole señalado un día, vinieron á él muchos á la posada, á los cuales declaraba y testificaba el reino de Dios, persuadiéndoles lo concerniente á Jesús, por la ley de Moisés y por los profetas, desde la mañana hasta la tarde.
24Y algunos asentían á lo que se decía, mas algunos no creían.
25Y como fueron entre sí discordes, se fueron, diciendo Pablo esta palabra: Bien ha hablado el Espíritu Santo por el profeta Isaías á nuestros padres,
26Diciendo: Ve á este pueblo, y diles: De oído oiréis, y no entenderéis; y viendo veréis, y no percibiréis:
27Porque el corazón de este pueblo se ha engrosado, y de los oídos oyeron pesadamente, y sus ojos taparon; porque no vean con los ojos, y oigan con los oídos, y entiendan de corazón, y se conviertan, y yo los sane.
28Séaos pues notorio que á los Gentiles es enviada esta salud de Dios: y ellos oirán.
29Y habiendo dicho esto, los Judíos salieron, teniendo entre sí gran contienda.
30Pablo empero, quedó dos años enteros en su casa de alquiler, y recibía á todos los que á él venían,
31Predicando el reino de Dios y enseñando lo que es del Señor Jesucristo con toda libertad, sin impedimento.

1And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
2And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
3And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
4And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
5And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
6Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
7In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.
8And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
9So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:
10Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.
11And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
12And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.
13And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:
14Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
15And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.
16And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.
17And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
18Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
19But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.
20For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
21And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judæa concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.
22But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
23And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.
24And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
25And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
26Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
27For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
28Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.
29And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
30And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,
31Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.

2The natives showed us uncommon kindness; for they kindled a fire and received us all, because of the present rain and because of the cold.
3But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand.
4When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped from the sea, yet Justice has not allowed to live.”
5However he shook off the creature into the fire, and wasn’t harmed.
6But they expected that he would have swollen or fallen down dead suddenly, but when they watched for a long time and saw nothing bad happen to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.
7Now in the neighborhood of that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius, who received us and courteously entertained us for three days.
8The father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery. Paul entered in to him, prayed, and laying his hands on him, healed him.
9Then when this was done, the rest also who had diseases in the island came and were cured.
10They also honored us with many honors; and when we sailed, they put on board the things that we needed.
11After three months, we set sail in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose figurehead was “The Twin Brothers.”
12Touching at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
13From there we circled around and arrived at Rhegium. After one day, a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli,
14where we found brothers, and were entreated to stay with them for seven days. So we came to Rome.
15From there the brothers, when they heard of us, came to meet us as far as The Market of Appius and The Three Taverns. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and took courage.
16When we entered into Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, but Paul was allowed to stay by himself with the soldier who guarded him.
17After three days Paul called together those who were the leaders of the Jews. When they had come together, he said to them, “I, brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the customs of our fathers, still was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,
18who, when they had examined me, desired to set me free, because there was no cause of death in me.
19But when the Jews spoke against it, I was constrained to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything about which to accuse my nation.
20For this cause therefore I asked to see you and to speak with you. For because of the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”
21They said to him, “We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor did any of the brothers come here and report or speak any evil of you.
22But we desire to hear from you what you think. For, as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.”
23When they had appointed him a day, many people came to him at his lodging. He explained to them, testifying about God’s Kingdom, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening.
24Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved.
25When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one message: “The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,
26saying, ‘Go to this people and say, in hearing, you will hear, but will in no way understand. In seeing, you will see, but will in no way perceive.
27For this people’s heart has grown callous. Their ears are dull of hearing. Their eyes they have closed. Lest they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, then I would heal them.’
28“Be it known therefore to you that the salvation of God is sent to the nations, and they will listen.”
29When he had said these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves.
30Paul stayed two whole years in his own rented house and received all who were coming to him,
31preaching God’s Kingdom and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
