1“¿Son ciertas estas acusaciones?” preguntó el sumo sacerdote.
2“¡Hermanos y padres, escúchenme!” respondió Esteban. “Dios apareció en su gloria a nuestro padre Abraham, cuando vivía en Mesopotamia, antes de que se mudara a Harán.
3“Dios le dijo: ‘Deja tu tierra y tu parentela, y vete a la tierra que yo te mostraré’.
4Y Abraham se marchó de esa tierra de los Caldeos y vivió en Harán. Después de la muerte de su padre, Dios lo envió aquí a este país donde ahora viven ustedes.
5Dios no le dio a Abraham una herencia aquí, ni siquiera un metro cuadrado. Pero Dios le prometió a Abraham que le daría a él y a sus descendientes la posesión de la tierra, aunque no tenía hijos.
6También Dios le dijo que sus descendientes vivirían en un país extranjero y que allí serían tomados como esclavos y maltratados durante cuatrocientos años.
7Luego Dios dijo: ‘Yo castigaré a la nación que los tome como esclavos. Y al final saldrán de allí y vendrán aquí a adorarme’.
8Dios también le dio a Abraham el pacto de la circuncisión, y por eso, cuando nació Isaac, Abraham lo circuncidó al octavo día. Isaac fue el padre de Jacob, y Jacob el padre de los doce patriarcas.
9“Los patriarcas, quienes estaban celosos de José, lo vendieron como esclavo en Egipto. Pero Dios estaba con él,
10y lo rescató de todos sus problemas. Le dio sabiduría y lo ayudó a ganar el favor del Faraón, quien lo puso como gobernador sobre Egipto y sobre la casa real.
11“Entonces hubo una gran hambruna en todo Egipto y Canaán, causando terrible miseria y nuestros padres no tenían alimento.
12Cuando Jacob escuchó que había grano en Egipto, envió a nuestros antepasados a hacer una primera visita.
13Pero durante su segunda visita, José les reveló a sus hermanos quién era, y el Faraón descubrió el origen familiar de José.
14Entonces José envió a buscar a su padre y a todos sus parientes: Setenta y cinco, en total.
15Así que Jacob viajó hacia Egipto, y murió allí, como también nuestros antepasados.
16Sus cuerpos fueron traídos de regreso a Siquem y fueron puestos en la tumba que Abraham había comprado con plata de los hijos de Jamor, en Siquem.
17“Cuando se acercaba el tiempo para el cumplimiento de la promesa que Dios le había hecho a Abraham, el número de los habitantes de Egipto aumentó.
18Y subió un nuevo rey al trono, que no conocía de José.
19Este rey se aprovechó de nuestro pueblo y trató mal a nuestros antepasados, obligándolos a abandonar a sus bebés para que murieran.
20Fue en este tiempo cuando nació Moisés. Era un niño hermoso, y durante tres meses recibió cuidado en la casa de su padre.
21Cuando llegó el momento de ser abandonado, la hija del Faraón lo rescató y cuidó de él como su propio hijo.
22“Moisés recibió instrucción en todas las áreas del conocimiento conforme a los Egipcios, y se convirtió en un gran orador y líder.
23Sin embargo, cuando tenía cuarenta años de edad, decidió visitar a sus parientes, los israelitas.
24Y vio a uno de ellos que era maltratado, por lo cual intervino para defenderlo. Entonces, tomó venganza en favor del hombre y mató al egipcio.
25Moisés pensaba que sus hermanos, los israelitas, verían que Dios los estaba rescatando a través de él, pero no lo vieron así.
26Al día siguiente, cuando llegó, dos israelitas estaban peleando. Entonces trató de hacerlos reconciliar para que dejaran de pelear. ‘¡Señores! ¡Ustedes son hermanos!’ les dijo. ‘¿Por qué se atacan el uno al otro?’
27“Pero el hombre que había comenzado la pelea empujó a Moisés. ‘¿Quién te puso como guardián de nosotros? ¿Acaso ahora eres nuestro juez?’ le preguntó.
28‘¿Vas a matarme como mataste ayer al egipcio?’
29Y cuando escuchó esto, Moisés huyó. Entonces se fue a vivir como exiliado en la tierra de Madián, donde tuvo dos hijos.
30“Cuarenta años más tarde, en el desierto del Monte Sinaí, un ángel se le apareció en las llamas de una zarza que ardía.
31Y cuando Moisés vio esto, se sorprendió, y se aproximó para ver más de cerca. Entonces la voz del Señor le habló:
32‘Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, Isaac y Jacob’. Entonces Moisés tembló de temor y no se atrevía a levantar la vista.
33El Señor le dijo: ‘Quita tus sandalias, porque el lugar donde estás es santo.
34Yo he visto el sufrimiento de mi pueblo en Egipto, y he oído sus clamores. He descendido para rescatarlos. Ahora ven, porque voy a enviarte a Egipto’.
35“Este fue el mismo Moisés que el pueblo había rechazado cuando dijeron: ‘¿Quién te puso como gobernante y juez sobre nosotros?’ Dios lo envió para que fuera tanto gobernante como libertador, por medio del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza.
36Entonces Moisés los sacó después de realizar señales milagrosas en Egipto, en el Mar Rojo, y siguió haciéndolo en el desierto durante cuarenta años.
37Este es el mismo Moisés que le prometió a los israelitas: ‘Dios les enviará un profeta como yo proveniente de su propio pueblo’.
38Y Moisés estaba con el pueblo de Dios reunido cuando el ángel le habló en el Monte Sinaí, y ahí junto con nuestros antepasados recibió la palabra viva de Dios para que nos la diera a nosotros.
39Él fue al que nuestros padres no escucharon. Ellos lo rechazaron y decidieron regresar a Egipto.
40Y le dijeron a Aarón: ‘Elabora dioses para que nos guíen, porque no sabemos qué ha ocurrido con Moisés, el que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto’.
41Entonces elaboraron un ídolo en forma de becerro, le presentaban sacrificios, y celebraban lo que ellos mismos habían hecho.
42“Así que Dios desistió de ellos. Y los dejó adorar las estrellas del cielo. Esto es lo que escribieron los profetas: ‘¿Acaso ustedes los israelitas me dieron ofrendas o hicieron sacrificios para mi durante los cuarenta años en el desierto?
43No, ustedes se llevaron el tabernáculo del dios Moloc y la imagen de la estrella del dios Refán, imágenes que ustedes hicieron para adorarlas. Por lo tanto yo los enviaré a exilio hasta más allá de Babilonia’.
44“Nuestros antepasados tenían el Tabernáculo del testimonio en el desierto. Dios le había dicho a Moisés cómo tenía que hacerlo, siguiendo el modelo que había visto.
45Más tarde, nuestros antepasados lo llevaron junto con Josué para asentarse en la tierra tomada de las naciones que el Señor expulsó delante de ellos. Y permaneció ahí hasta el tiempo de David.
46David halló el favor de Dios y pidió hacer una morada permanente para el Dios de Jacob.
47Pero fue Salomón el que construyó un Templo para él.
48Por supuesto que el Todopoderoso no vive en los Templos que nosotros hacemos. Como dijo el profeta:
49‘El cielo es mi trono, y la tierra es el lugar donde pongo mis pies. ¿Qué tipo de morada pueden ustedes construir para mí?’ pregunta el Señor. ‘¿Qué cama podrían hacerme ustedes para descansar?
50¿Acaso no lo hice yo todo?’
51“¡Pueblo arrogante y terco! ¡Nunca escuchan! ¡Ustedes siempre pelean contra el Espíritu Santo! ¡Actúan como lo hacían sus padres!
52¿Hubo acaso algún profeta que sus padres no persiguieran? Mataron a todos los que profetizaban sobre la venida de Aquél que es verdaderamente bueno y recto. Él es Aquél a quien ustedes traicionaron y asesinaron.
53Ustedes, los que recibieron la ley por medio de los ángeles, pero se negaron a guardarla”.
54Cuando oyeron esto, los miembros del concilio se enfurecieron, y le hacían gruñidos, crujiendo sus dientes.
55Pero Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo, elevó su mirada al cielo y vio la gloria de Dios, y a Jesús a la diestra de Dios.
56“Miren”, dijo él, “Veo el cielo abierto, y al Hijo del Hombre a la diestra de Dios”.
57Pero ellos taparon sus oídos con sus manos y gritaban tan fuerte como podían. Todos se apresuraron juntos hacia él,
58lo llevaron a rastras fuera de la ciudad, y comenzaron a apedrearlo. Sus acusadores pusieron sus abrigos junto a un joven llamado Saulo.
59Y mientras lo seguían apedreando, Esteban oró: “Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu”.
60Entonces se arrodilló, clamando: “¡Señor, por favor no les tengas en cuenta este pecado!” Y después de decir esto, murió.

1EL príncipe de los sacerdotes dijo entonces: ¿Es esto así?
2Y él dijo: Varones hermanos y padres, oid: El Dios de la gloria apareció á nuestro padre Abraham, estando en Mesopotamia, antes que morase en Chârán,
3Y le dijo: Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela, y ven á la tierra que te mostraré.
4Entonces salió de la tierra de los Caldeos, y habitó en Chârán: y de allí, muerto su padre, le traspasó á esta tierra, en la cual vosotros habitáis ahora;
5Y no le dió herencia en ella, ni aun para asentar un pie: mas le prometió que se la daría en posesión, y á su simiente después de él, no teniendo hijo.
6Y hablóle Dios así: Que su simiente sería extranjera en tierra ajena, y que los reducirían á servidumbre y maltratarían, por cuatrocientos años.
7Mas yo juzgaré, dijo Dios, la nación á la cual serán siervos: y después de esto saldrán y me servirán en este lugar.
8Y dióle el pacto de la circuncisión: y así Abraham engendró á Isaac, y le circuncidó al octavo día; é Isaac á Jacob, y Jacob á los doce patriarcas.
9Y los patriarcas, movidos de envidia, vendieron á José para Egipto; mas Dios era con él,
10Y le libró de todas sus tribulaciones, y le dió gracia y sabiduría en la presencia de Faraón, rey de Egipto, el cual le puso por gobernador sobre Egipto, y sobre toda su casa.
11Vino entonces hambre en toda la tierra de Egipto y de Canaán, y grande tribulación; y nuestros padres no hallaban alimentos.
12Y como oyese Jacob que había trigo en Egipto, envió á nuestros padres la primera vez.
13Y en la segunda, José fué conocido de sus hermanos, y fué sabido de Faraón el linaje de José.
14Y enviando José, hizo venir á su padre Jacob, y á toda su parentela, en número de setenta y cinco personas.
15Así descendió Jacob á Egipto, donde murió él y nuestros padres;
16Los cuales fueron trasladados á Sichêm, y puestos en el sepulcro que compró Abraham á precio de dinero de los hijos de Hemor de Sichêm.
17Mas como se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa, la cual Dios había jurado á Abraham, el pueblo creció y multiplicóse en Egipto,
18Hasta que se levantó otro rey en Egipto que no conocía á José.
19Este, usando de astucia con nuestro linaje, maltrató á nuestros padres, á fin de que pusiesen á peligro de muerte sus niños, para que cesase la generación.
20En aquel mismo tiempo nació Moisés, y fué agradable á Dios: y fué criado tres meses en casa de su padre.
21Mas siendo puesto al peligro, la hija de Faraón le tomó, y le crió como á hijo suyo.
22Y fué enseñado Moisés en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios; y era poderoso en sus dichos y hechos.
23Y cuando hubo cumplido la edad de cuarenta años, le vino voluntad de visitar á sus hermanos los hijos de Israel.
24Y como vió á uno que era injuriado, defendióle, é hiriendo al Egipcio, vengó al injuriado.
25Pero él pensaba que sus hermanos entendían que Dios les había de dar salud por su mano; mas ellos no lo habían entendido.
26Y al día siguiente, riñendo ellos, se les mostró, y los ponía en paz, diciendo: Varones, hermanos sois, ¿por qué os injuriáis los unos á los otros?
27Entonces el que injuriaba á su prójimo, le rempujó, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros?
28¿Quieres tú matarme, como mataste ayer al Egipcio?
29A esta palabra Moisés huyó, y se hizo extranjero en tierra de Madián, donde engendró dos hijos.
30Y cumplidos cuarenta años, un ángel le apareció en el desierto del monte Sina, en fuego de llama de una zarza.
31Entonces Moisés mirando, se maravilló de la visión: y llegándose para considerar, fué hecha á él voz del Señor:
32Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, y el Dios de Isaac, y el Dios de Jacob. Mas Moisés, temeroso, no osaba mirar.
33Y le dijo el Señor: Quita los zapatos de tus pies, porque el lugar en que estás es tierra santa.
34He visto, he visto la aflicción de mi pueblo que está en Egipto, y he oído el gemido de ellos, y he descendido para librarlos. Ahora pues, ven, te enviaré á Egipto.
35A este Moisés, al cual habían rehusado, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por príncipe y juez? á éste envió Dios por príncipe y redentor con la mano del ángel que le apareció en la zarza.
36Este los sacó, habiendo hecho prodigios y milagros en la tierra de Egipto, y en el mar Bermejo, y en el desierto por cuarenta años.
37Este es el Moisés, el cual dijo á los hijos de Israel: Profeta os levantará el Señor Dios vuestro de vuestros hermanos, como yo; á él oiréis.
38Este es aquél que estuvo en la congregación en el desierto con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sina, y con nuestros padres; y recibió las palabras de vida para darnos:
39Al cual nuestros padres no quisieron obedecer; antes le desecharon, y se apartaron de corazón á Egipto,
40Diciendo á Aarón: Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque á este Moisés, que nos sacó de tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le ha acontecido.
41Y entonces hicieron un becerro, y ofrecieron sacrificio al ídolo, y en las obras de sus manos se holgaron.
42Y Dios se apartó, y los entregó que sirviesen al ejército del cielo; como está escrito en el libro de los profetas: ¿Me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios en el desierto por cuarenta años, casa de Israel?
43Antes, trajisteis el tabernáculo de Moloch, y la estrella de vuestro dios Remphan: figuras que os hicisteis para adorarlas: os transportaré pues, más allá de Babilonia.
44Tuvieron nuestros padres el tabernáculo del testimonio en el desierto, como había ordenado Dios, hablando á Moisés que lo hiciese según la forma que había visto.
45El cual recibido, metieron también nuestros padres con Josué en la posesión de los Gentiles, que Dios echó de la presencia de nuestros padres, hasta los días de David;
46El cual halló gracia delante de Dios, y pidió hallar tabernáculo para el Dios de Jacob.
47Mas Salomón le edificó casa.
48Si bien el Altísimo no habita en templos hechos de mano; como el profeta dice:
49El cielo es mi trono, y la tierra es el estrado de mis pies. ¿Qué casa me edificaréis? dice el Señor; ¿ó cuál es el lugar de mi reposo?
50¿No hizo mi mano todas estas cosas?
51Duros de cerviz, é incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos, vosotros resistís siempre al Espíritu Santo: como vuestros padres, así también vosotros.
52¿A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron vuestros padres? y mataron á los que antes anunciaron la venida del Justo, del cual vosotros ahora habéis sido entregadores y matadores;
53Que recibisteis la ley por disposición de ángeles, y no la guardasteis.
54Y oyendo estas cosas, regañaban de sus corazones, y crujían los dientes contra él.
55Mas él, estando lleno de Espíritu Santo, puestos los ojos en el cielo, vió la gloria de Dios, y á Jesús que estaba á la diestra de Dios,
56Y dijo: He aquí, veo los cielos abiertos, y al Hijo del hombre que está á la diestra de Dios.
57Entonces dando grandes voces, se taparon sus oídos, y arremetieron unánimes contra él;
58Y echándolo fuera de la ciudad, le apedreaban: y los testigos pusieron sus vestidos á los pies de un mancebo que se llamaba Saulo.
59Y apedrearon á Esteban, invocando él y diciendo: Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu.
60Y puesto de rodillas, clamó á gran voz: Señor, no les imputes este pecado. Y habiendo dicho esto, durmió.

1Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
2And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
3And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
4Then came he out of the land of the Chaldæans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
5And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
6And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
7And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
8And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
9And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
10And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
12But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
13And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph’s kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
14Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
15So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,
16And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
17But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
19The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
20In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:
21And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
22And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
23And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
24And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
25For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
26And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
27But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
28Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
29Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
30And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
32Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
33Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
34I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
35This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
36He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
37This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
38This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
39To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
40Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
43Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
45Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
46Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47But Solomon built him an house.
48Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
50Hath not my hand made all these things?
51Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
53Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
55But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
57Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
58And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.
59And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

1The high priest said, “Are these things so?”
2He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
3and said to him, ‘Get out of your land and away from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’
4Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land where you are now living.
5He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his offspring after him, when he still had no child.
6God spoke in this way: that his offspring would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.
7‘I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve me in this place.’
8He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
9“The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him
10and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.
12But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.
13On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh.
14Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.
15Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, himself and our fathers;
16and they were brought back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.
17“But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18until there arose a different king who didn’t know Joseph.
19The same took advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to abandon their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.
20At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome to God. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.
21When he was abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up and reared him as her own son.
22Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.
23But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
24Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.
25He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.
26“The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’
27But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
28Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
29Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
30“When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, the voice of the Lord came to him,
32‘I am the God of your fathers: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Moses trembled and dared not look.
33The Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
34I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’
35“This Moses whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.
37This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.’
38This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living revelations to give to us,
39to whom our fathers wouldn’t be obedient, but rejected him and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
40saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’
41They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
42But God turned away and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship, so I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’
44“Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;
45which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations whom God drove out before the face of our fathers to the days of David,
46who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
47But Solomon built him a house.
48However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,
49‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord. ‘Or what is the place of my rest?
50Didn’t my hand make all these things?’
51“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.
52Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.
53You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”
54Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
57But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears, then rushed at him with one accord.
58They threw him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”
60He kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
