Muchachos en quienes no hubiese tacha alguna, y de buen parecer, y enseñados en toda sabiduría, y sabios en ciencia, y de buen entendimiento, é idóneos para estar en el palacio del rey; y que les enseñase las letras y la lengua de los Caldeos.

Y Daniel había tomado la decisión de no hacerse inmundo con la comida o el vino del rey; así que le pidió al capitán de los sirvientes eunucos que le permitiera no contaminarse.

Y el capitán de los sirvientes eunucos dijo a Daniel: Tengo miedo de mi señor el rey, que ha dado órdenes sobre tu comida y tu bebida; ¿Y si te ve de peor aspecto que los otros jóvenes gozosos? entonces pondrás mi cabeza en peligro ante el rey.
Y dijo el príncipe de los eunucos á Daniel: Tengo temor de mi señor el rey, que señaló vuestra comida y vuestra bebida; pues luego que él habrá visto vuestros rostros más tristes que los de los muchachos que son semejantes á vosotros, condenaréis para con el rey mi cabeza.
And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink. For why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? Then you would endanger my head with the king.”
Entonces Daniel dijo al guardián a cuyo cuidado el capitán de los sirvientes eunucos había puesto a Daniel, Ananías, Misael y Azarías:

Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

Pon a prueba a tus siervos durante diez días; que nos den legumbres para nuestra comida y agua para nuestra bebida.

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

Entonces mira nuestras caras y las caras de los jóvenes que tienen comida de la mesa del rey; y, habiéndose comparado, haz a tus sirvientes lo que te parezca correcto.

Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

Entonces él les escuchó en esto y los puso a prueba por diez días.

Entonces el guardián les quitaba regularmente la carne y el vino que iba a ser su bebida, y les daba grano.
Así fué que Melsar tomaba la ración de la comida de ellos, y el vino de su beber, y dábales legumbres.
Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
So the steward took away their delicacies and the wine that they were given to drink, and gave them vegetables.
Ahora, en cuanto a estos cuatro jóvenes, Dios les dio conocimiento y los hizo expertos en todo aprendizaje de libros y sabiduría; y Daniel era sabio en todas las visiones y sueños.
Y á estos cuatro muchachos dióles Dios conocimiento é inteligencia en todas letras y ciencia: mas Daniel tuvo entendimiento en toda visión y sueños.
As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
